MS Drug May Help Treat Malignant Mesothelioma, Too – Surviving Mesothelioma

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

Preliminary tests of a potential new mesothelioma treatment have yielded some exciting results at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. Mesothelioma researchers there are evaluating an immune system modulator called FTY720 or fingolimod. Derived from a fungus called Iscaria sinclairii, FTY720 has been used to treat the relapsing form of multiple sclerosis. Although FTY720 has shown what the research team calls therapeutic potential in some other forms of cancer, this is the first study evaluating the agent in the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. To test the impact of FTY720 on mesothelioma tumors, the researchers first treated a panel of mesothelioma cell lines as well as normal human mesothelial cells. They assessed the action of the agent by measuring the activity of phosphatase protein 2A (PP2A), a major target for FTY720. The next step was to evaluate the activation of programmed cell death or apoptosis. A breakdown in apoptosis signaling is a major reason why cancers like malignant mesothelioma are allowed to grow out of control. Finally, the team gave the FTY720 treatment to mice that had been infected with human mesothelioma tumors to look for negative side effects. The University of Hawaii researchers found that FTY720 significantly suppressed the … Continue reading

(Published Wednesday, April 5, 2017) A first of its kind study from Duke University is targeting autism with the goal being to see if stem cells could be used to help treat children dealing with the disorder. Researchers used umbilical cord blood infusions to help ease autism symptoms in children. They found that using the youngsters own rare stem cells resulted in significant improvements in their behavior. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as one in 45 American children has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Symptoms vary from mild social awkwardness to serious mental handicap, debilitating repetitive behaviors, and an inability to communicate. Theres no cure, but researchers hope their findings could lead to long-term treatment. Skeptics point out there are many unanswered questions in this study, but now a second trial is underway. Artificial Thymus Fabricates Cancer Fighting T-Cells From Stem Cells – ReliaWire

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

A new strategy to produce human T cells has been developed by researchers at UCLA. T-cells are the white blood cells that fight against disease-causing intruders in the body. The system could be used to engineer T cells to search for and destroy cancer cells. It could be a valuable step toward manufacturing a readily available supply of T cells for treating many different types of cancer. The thymus, located in the front of the heart, plays an important role in the immune system. It uses blood stem cells to make T cells, which help the body fight infections and have the ability to eliminate cancer cells. But as people grow older or become ill, the thymus isnt as efficient at making T cells. In your body, T-cells produced by the thymus are assigned receptor molecules, which act as guides towards cells infected by viruses or cancers. Leveraging that process is emerging as a promising area of cancer research. Scientists have found that arming large numbers of T cells with specific cancer-finding receptors an approach known as adoptive T cell immunotherapy has shown exceptional results in clinical trials. Adoptive T cell immunotherapy commonly involves collecting T cells from people who … Continue reading

Punjab News Express NEVADA(USA) : A team of Germanys University of Duisburg-Essen researchers found that patients with ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, assigned to 12 supervised 90-minute weekly sessions of yoga, had a greater increase in quality of life and reduced activity of their colitis; according to a release issued on April five. The findings suggest that regular yoga may be a valuable adjunct to conventional medical therapies for ulcerative colitis, release of Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, an international journal of gastroenterology and hepatology, indicates. Yoga can be considered as a safe and effective ancillary intervention for patients with ulcerative colitis and impaired quality of life, the study concluded. Many people use yoga to increase their quality of life. Our study suggests that it might be worthwhile to consider yoga as part of a multimodal integrative approach for treating ulcerative colitis, said Professor Holger Cramer, lead author of this Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics study. This clinical trial randomly assigned 77 patients with ulcerative colitis in clinical remission but impaired quality of life to yoga. Meanwhile, distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, called this clinical trial looking into yoga intervention for patients with ulcerative … Continue reading

Some choose a medicated route, perhaps choosing to drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes to take the edge off, while others choose healthier approaches to deal with stress, such as exercise. However, there are people who have a much harder time dealing with bouts of stress, as the cause for their stress is due to an internal bodily abnormality, as seen in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). But a recent study has found that UC patients who participated in yoga found significant relieve from their stress-induced symptoms. Many people use yoga to increase their quality of life. However, he and his doctors are confident a third successful surgery this April, which will remove his large intestine, should allow him to continue his NFL career. Mautis currently an unrestricted free agent, but the Saints, who paid his full salary last season as he recovered, have indicated they would like to re-sign him. Mauti said he routinely needed multiple IVs before kickoff to make it through games and would use the bathroom up to 25 times per day. Before his first surgery last November, he was down about 50 pounds from his playing weight to 190. If I kept … Continue reading

Perth woman with cerebral palsy faces losing driver’s licence after 36 years – ABC Online

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

Posted April 08, 2017 14:13:32 A Perth woman with cerebral palsy said she was being forced to sit an extra test or risk losing the driver's licence she has held for 36 years. Kerry Allan-Zinner, 53, has been driving since she was 17 and has a blemish-free record. But for the first time, what had previously been a routine licence renewal hit a snag and she was asked to prove she was fit to drive. "I invite you to walk around my car, find a scratch, find a dent, find something that says this person could possibly be a danger to herself or to others," she said. "There is no valid reason for me not to have my licence processed." She said she was being unfairly targeted because of her condition. Cerebral palsy affects the muscles and does not worsen over time. "It is static, so whilst my lifestyle changes the damage that is my disability does not change," she said. Ms Allan-Zinner holds an F class extension on her licence because she previously helped run a limousine service, where she was paid to drive. That licence extension requires her to sit a medical every three years to ensure she … Continue reading
