Nine-year-old cerebral palsy patient is guest of honour at unveiling of Co-op revamp – Nottingham Post

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

Comments(0) A courageous nine-year-old who is battling cerebral palsy was given the special honour of officially unveiling a revamped store in her home town. Kareena Hayes hit the headlines in February after thieves stole a cafe's charity box set up to raise money towards a 10,000 target for life-changing private treatment at Queen's Medical Centre, to help her walk. But within days, the youngster was smiling again after an anonymous businessman heard of her plight and stumped up the money to pay for the operation. Now Kareena, a pupil of Longmore Primary School, in Long Eaton, has been given another boost after she and her fellow pupils helped to cut the ribbon and declare the new-look Co-op store in the town's Grasmere Road officially open, following a 600,000 refurbishment. As well as inviting Kareena and her classmates to be guests of honour, the store has also launched a fundraising appeal for Kareena, to help towards the appeal set up by her family for the operation and additional costs including for physiotherapy afterwards. Kareena's father, Craig Hammond, 39, who is her full-time carer and also dad to Nathan, 11, said: "It's great that we've had a lot of support from the … Continue reading

Princeton Ethics Professor Defends Woman Convicted of Raping … – Christian News Network

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

PRINCETON, N.J. An ethics professor at Princeton University has penned a controversial op-ed in defense of a Rutgers professor who was convicted of sexually assaulting a man with severe cerebral palsy, asserting that the two were in love and the man might have actually consented. The New York Times published Peter Singers article on April 3, which centered on the case of Anna Stubblefield, who is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence. Stubblefield was found guilty in October 2015 of engaging in sexual activity with a 29-year-old man named D.J., who is unable to speak. In addition to the criminal case, D.Js family sued Stubblefield in their belief that their son was molested and was awarded $4 million by a New Jersey court last year. But Singer, along with Jeff McMahan, a professor of moral philosophy at Oxford, argue thatit is rather Stubblefield who is a victim of grievous and unjust harms because there is no evidence that the sexual relationship hurt D.J. For someone to spend 12 years in prison for a sexual act that took place in the context of a long-term, caring relationship that was motivated by loveat least on Stubblefields partand about which there is no … Continue reading

By Pete Banda Managing Editor [emailprotected] When Tristan Shafer was born, doctors told his parents that he would most likely never be able to run or play any kind of sport. In fact, doctors informed the parents to prepare for the possibility that Shafer would never be able to walk due to his cerebral palsy. So you can only imagine the amount of joy and intrigue they felt when their son came to them with the revelation that he wanted to join the track team at Riverside Middle school. It would be Tristans first time trying out for mainstream sports team. Tristan has been taking part in the Special Olympics since last year and he really enjoys it, said Tristans mom, Lauren Shafer, who is a teacher at Riverside. He heard on the intercom at school that they were going to be holding tryouts for the track team and he came to my class to tell me that he wanted to join the team It was a little shocking because he had never gone out for any mainstream sports, but I talked to his Dad and we agreed to let him go ahead and do it. Tristan would go on … Continue reading

When Lauren Wailerwas first diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby, her parents never let her be negative. She said, They basically raised me thinking that I could do anything that I wanted to do, just like any other kid, and to reach for the stars and to follow your dreams. And following her dreams meant being a leader. She attended a Cerebral Palsy conference at the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. I learned there was no federal funding for cerebral palsy research. Which is insane. On top of that it affects 17 million people world wide. Its called the forgotten disability. 'It was a normal pregnancy with no issues but the day before Alex was due I noticed that she had stopped moving,' Alex's mother Anne said. At some stage in the 24 hours before her birth, Alex was deprived of oxygen in the womb and suffered HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy). After delivery, Alex was placed in a hypothermic state to reduce her body temperature gradually in an attempt to reduce the level of damage to her brain. Judge adjourns application for DNR orders for brain-injured man – Irish Times

Because the brain-injured man has been made a ward of court, the president of the High Court, Mr Justice Peter Kelly, must decide whether the orders sought by the HSE are in his best interests. Photograph: Chris Maddaloni/Collins A father whose severely brain-injured son is at the centre of a case over whether doctors can opt not to resuscitate him if his condition deteriorates has said he wants his son to live and be kept alive. I want him to be kept alive. Where theres life, theres hope. In Deo confidimus [in God we trust], he added. When the time comes for him to leave this world, it should come naturally and with the full support a civil and caring society can offer. He wants his son to remain in a hospital high-dependency unit where he is getting excellent care and to get all necessary treatments to keep him alive. He was giving evidence in the continuing hearing of the Health Service Executives application for orders permitting doctors not to administer increased ventilatory, CPR or other treatments to the man, aged in his 30s, if his condition deteriorates. The parents oppose the orders. They have separate medical negligence proceedings against … Continue reading

Scientists Reverse Paralysis in Mice After a Single Treatment – Mental Floss

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body responds to its central nervous system and mounts an immune attack, using T cells against its myelinthe protective coating around nerve cellsand the oligodendrocytes that produce myelin. This leads to scar tissue, degradation of nerve fiber, and eventual loss of motor function. Thus far, MS has typically been treated systemically with drugs that suppress the entire immune system, which causes a host of side effects, including susceptibility to infection, hair loss, bladder infections, and nausea, among others. Now, a team of researchers from the University of Maryland (UoM), has formulated a new therapeutic approach in mice that focuses on a specific immune targetthe lymph nodeswithout causing systemic immune suppression. Using this technique, they reversed MS-like paralysis in mice. Lead researcher Christopher Jewell, assistant professor of bioengineering at UoM, presented their findings yesterday at the 253rd National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society. These new results are a continuation of research the team published in the September 2016 issue of the journal Cell Reports. Jewell tells mental_floss that you can think of the lymph nodes as the place where immune cells are assigned their jobs. The lymph … Continue reading
