TV Ratings Thursday: 'Grey's Anatomy' slips, 'Mom' and 'Life in Pieces' rise – TVbytheNumbers

Masked Scheduler's Ratings Smackdown We are definitely in the spring malaise. Baseball returning and the political events of the day didn't help. *** In my job as head of scheduling at two networks, I made it my business to avoid dealing with talent both in front of and behind the camera. I did a much better job of staying away from actors than I did from the showrunners of many of our successful shows. I always felt that I would be better at my job if I could go to functions and most people did not know who I was. At FOX I did have one role in the cultivation of talent, and that was whenever a professional wrestler came in for a meeting with our talent department. Marcia Shulman, our head of casting at FOX, would come down to my office and ask if I would meet with a wrestler since they had no idea how to start a conversation. As a result I had the opportunity to hang with Triple H, Chyna and Stone Cold Steve Austin, among others. None of that compares with the time that I was in a room with Don Rickles. I thought about … Continue reading

Anatomy of a secure internet-connected thing – Electronics Weekly

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

Many of the things we use on a daily basis are becoming smart and connected to the Internet. The Internet of Things (IoT) will improve our lives by helping us reach our health and fitness goals, reduce resource consumption, increase productivity, and track and secure our assets. Many embedded developers realise the potential benefits of the IoT and are actively developing various applications, from connected home devices to wearables and home security systems. However, along with these benefits come risks. No one wants to design an application thats prone to hacking or data theft. Undesirable events like high-profile hacks can lead to serious damage to brand images and loss of customer trust, and, in the worst cases, slow down or permanently reduce the adoption of the IoT. The IoT is often referred to as an industrial revolution. The number of connected devices will grow rapidly in the coming years. If there is any disagreement among analysts who follow the IoT, it is in the number of billions of devices that will be connected. The economic value to society is estimated to be in the range of $4-11 trillion dollars. In the race to accelerate time-to-market for connected device products, implementing … Continue reading

A womanwith cerebral palsy has said her condition will never stop her from being successful. Rachael Wallace has spent most of her life overcoming obstacles. She has used a wheelchair since early childhood as a result of the condition and faced years of bullying at school. But the 26-year-old refused to let it get in the way of excelling in life and is now fighting for better medical care for people with cerebral palsy. Rachael who is studying for a PhD in law at the University of Dundee has launched a petition calling for the establishment of specialist NHS treatment for adults with the condition. She recently took her fight to the Scottish Parliament. Speaking to the Tele, Rachael said: There was a decline in my condition about six or seven years ago after I had left the paediatric service when I was 18. I approached Murdo Fraser, my local MSP, who helped raise the issue at Parliament. We werent getting anywhere and because I have a background in law I was comfortable submitting a petition to get some action. Theres no clinical pathway for cerebral palsy sufferers but there is for people with MS or Parkinsons. Its just not … Continue reading

Asterias (AST): Blazing the Stem Cell Trail for Spinal Cord Injury – Equities.com

Posted: Published on April 7th, 2017

Yesterday we highlighted the GTCbio Stem Cell Summit in Boston. Another company we've been closely following is also represented at the conference, Asterias Biotherapeutics (NYSE: AST). Asterias is developing therapies based on pluripotent stem cells to address significant unmet medical needs in neurology and oncology. According to Boston Children's Hospital, pluripotent stem cells are the body's master cells, potentially able to produce any cell or tissue the body needs to repair itself. Like all stem cells, pluripotent stem cells are also able to self-renew, meaning they can perpetually create more copies of themselves. The company draws its name from the common starfish, Asterias rubens, which has the ability to regenerate lost limbs even in adulthood. The company's lead product candidate, AST-OPC1, is currently in a Phase 1/2a dose ranging trial for spinal cord injury. As Patrick Cox discussed two months ago, Asterias' clinical trial has been generating significant interest. In the company's earnings call last week, CEO Steve Cartt highlighted the ongoing clinical and corporate progress: Source: Asterias Biotherapeutics Corporate Presentation, Jan. 24, 2017 We note that the company's cash position is much better than it was a year ago. As shown in the chart above, Asterias' spinal cord trial … Continue reading

My View: Let’s hope 7 bodes well in Parkinson’s battle – Buffalo News

Posted: Published on April 7th, 2017

By Chris Jamele April is a wonderful time of regeneration and promise. Of late, April has taken on an even greater significance for me, because it is National Parkinsons Awareness Month. My fathers 20-year battle with the disease deeply affected my family, and it gave an unexpected purpose to my energies. April is a remarkable time of discovery and optimism, elements that shape efforts by the National Parkinson Foundation of Western New York in raising awareness of the prevalence of this disease in our region, providing education about the affliction and recognizing the extraordinary daily battle that Parkinsonians and their care partners face. Realizing that this is my seventh year with the NPFWNY, I began to find an uncanny correlation between Parkinsons and the number seven. Seven is a bit of a magical number. Various parts of our lives, our beliefs and our world are intertwined with this digit. There are seven days in a week, seven continents, seven seas, seven wonders of the ancient world and seven colors in a rainbow. The number has connotations both good and bad. In some games, rolling a seven with a pair of dice can be a winner. There are cultures that consider … Continue reading

Doctors gave us rare access to a surgery that can stop symptoms like tremors, stiffness and slowness for Parkinsons patients. The procedure is called deep brain stimulation. Even though the surgery has been around for years, doctors say only about ten percent of Parkinsons disease patients take advantage of it. Randy Ducote, 49, started noticing tremors 10 years ago. Hed always been active and coaches his sons football and baseball teams. Thats why he says his diagnosis was devastating. It got to the point where I didnt want to be around other people. I didnt want to answer the phone. I dont want to say I was depressed, but I wasnt excited to get out of bed like I was a year before. Before I realized what I … Continue reading
