A 19-year-old man with cerebral palsy has traveled to Boston from his Kansas City home in search of a medical miracle thanks in part to the efforts of Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet and the founder of Jimmy Johns sandwich chain. Tristan Wiesing, who cannot speak or walk, is suffering from severe gastrointestinal issues that are preventing him from receiving treatment for his limbs, The Kansas City Star reported. On Monday, Stonestreet shared a photo of Wiesing and his father, David, and his grandfather aboard Jimmy John Liautauds private plane en route to Boston Childrens Hospital for an appointment with Dr. Samuel Nurko. 6-YEAR-OLD DANCER LOSES LEG AFTER STREP THROAT SPIRALS INTO SPREADING INFECTION This is my pal Tristan, his dad and his grandpa. Ohio Family Awarded $14.5M In Cerebral Palsy Birth Injury Case – Legal Examiner

Posted: Published on April 7th, 2017

A Pennsylvania jury has ordered obstetrician-gynecologist Thomas Carnevale, along with his employer Clearfield Hospital, to pay around $14.5 million in damages to the family of a child diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The parents say Carnevales failures of obstetric care resulted in widespread brain damage, ultimately causing their childs neuromuscular disorder. In their birth injury lawsuit, parents who now live in Ohio accused Carnevale of failing to manage their childs 2012 delivery. The physicians alleged failure was a consequential one, the family says. Carnevale administered the mother an excessive dose of Pitocin, the parents claim, while continuing to deliver the medication as the childs heart rate began to drop. Pitocin is often used to stimulate contractions during difficult deliveries, but can also lead to precipitous decreases in fetal heart rate and other complications. At this point, Carnevale should have realized that the childs health was deteriorating rapidly, the family contends. Instead of discontinuing the medication, though, the doctor kept his patient on Pitocin for the remaining duration of the delivery. Carnevales second major mistake, the parents claim, was to forego the possibility of an assisted delivery even after the childs head was crowning. The delivery continued for another ten minutes, according … Continue reading

Irish child with cerebral palsy celebrates second anniversary of life … – Irish Mirror

Posted: Published on April 7th, 2017

A child with cerebral palsy has celebrated the second anniversary of a life-changing operation that enabled him to walk. Six-year-old Tadhg Kelly was facing life in a wheelchair as a result of the movement disorder that affects his muscles. At just three, doctors told his parents Moya, 43, and 44-year-old Jonathan who have both battled cancer their son would never walk. But they refused to give up and raised 80,000 to send Tadhg to St Louis in the US for spinal surgery. Dubliner Moya said: We were advised the sooner we put him in an electric wheelchair, the better. But having seen the success of many other Irish children who had travelled to America for treatment we refused to give up hope and decided to apply to see if Tadhg was a candidate for a surgery. Having just finished treatment for breast cancer myself, the prospect of raising that amount of money was daunting but we would have done anything to make this possible. We had our share of bad luck with Tadhgs dad having also fought cancer a few years previously. It was time for something positive to happen. Tadhg had Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery to open up the … Continue reading

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash., April 6, 2017 Brain injuries don't happen in isolation. They're often accompanied by chronic pain or long-impacting injuries or behavioral health concerns like post-traumatic stress. And, whatever caused the injury -- an explosion, a vehicle accident or a fall -- also affects the rest of the person. These coexisting conditions can make patients more complex, and "are often very difficult to treat through our normal, conventional health care system," said Army Col. Beverly Scott, the medical and program director of Madigan Army Medical Center's Traumatic Brain Injury Program and Intrepid Spirit Program here. MIST Program Enter the Madigan Intrepid Spirit Transitions program, a six-week intensive outpatient group designed to address the complex conditions of eight to 12 service members at a time. "The priority goal is to help individuals so they can return to duty or improve their well-being for whatever path they are on . It's never too late to help them address a number of issues that they may be having following a traumatic brain injury, dealing with pain, dealing with behavior health issues," Scott said, emphasizing that the program goes beyond a TBI focus and also treats patients with other trauma-related conditions. Carolyn Hax: Traumatic brain injury threatens to break up family – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Carolyn Hax, Washington Post 9:17 p.m. CT April 5, 2017 Carolyn Hax(Photo: Washington Post) Adapted from a recent online discussion: Carolyn: About two years ago my husband was in a bad accident, no fault of his own, and while his physical injuries have mostly healed, he suffered a head injury and his personality has changed. He was once so even-keeled and sweet, and now he's volatile and moody. He's never been violent or abusive, but he sulks, withdraws, and snaps quickly. He'll give me and our two elementary-school-age kids the silent treatment over the most minor incidents. Heknows he's different and he's trying hard (with therapy) to get back to what he was, but honestly I don't know. One year I could take, but it's not good for the kids, we are all stressed, and he may never get back. Financially I could leave without a lot of problems. I don't want to leave my old husband, but I don't think I would have married this one. My kids miss their old father as well, but are so tentative around him now. I know it hurts him too; he doesn't want to be like this. I don't even know how … Continue reading

Since women betweenages 2050are the most likely to get MS, doctors expect some questions about pregnancy. How does MS affect pregnancy? Can MS patients have children? Then, they can talk with their practitioners further before getting pregnant. Breaking Treatment If MS patients are not pregnant, they will usually take a round of drugs that slow down the diseases effects. They may also take medicines to lessen painful symptoms. While the usual drugs prescribed for MS help patients somewhat, they have not proven extremely effective. Recently, researchers have been studying and testing anew drugthat will even help patients with severe MS. These patients usually suffer debilitating symptoms that worsen over time, a form of MS called primary progressive. Until now, they had little hope of battling these severe effects.
