New Spinal Cord Treatment Lets Paralyzed Man Stand for the First Time in Years – Futurism

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2017

Giant Steps For Humankind Researchers at the Mayo Clinic successfully used intense physical therapy and electrical stimulation on the spinal cord to help a patient stand, intentionally move his paralyzed legs, and make step-like motions. These were the first movementsthe patient had experienced in his legs in three years. 26-year-old Jered Chinnock injured his spinal cord at the sixth thoracic vertebrae three years ago. He could not move or feel anything lower than the middle of his back, and was diagnosed with a motor complete spinal cord injury. At the outset of the study, Chinnock underwent 22 weeks of physical therapy with three training sessions per week. His training goal was to prepare his muscles so they would be strong enough to attempt the physical tasks while his spinal cord was being stimulated. Next, the team implanted an electrode below the injured area in the epidural space, close to the spinal cord, and a computer-controlled device just under the patients abdominal skin. The FDA gave permission to the Mayo Clinic for this off-label use of the device, which controls thetransmission of an electrical current to the spinal cord, which in turnallowed the patient to create movement in his muscles. After a … Continue reading

Johns Hopkins secretary helps students, faculty see Parkinson’s disease from patient’s perspective – Baltimore Sun

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2017

Julie Bullock remembers the day she was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's disease in September 2011. She walked to her car after her doctor's appointment and sat in the parking lot searching the internet on her phone. "Will Parkinson's disease kill me?" the Essex resident recalls typing. It wouldn't. She returned to her job that day as a secretary in the Johns Hopkins University's department of psychological and brain sciences the office where she began six months before her diagnosis, working with students studying conditions like hers. Five-and-a-half years later, Bullock, 48, hasn't let the tremor in her right hand stop her from making homemade jams and other foods to spread the word and drum up funds for the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and she's recruited local restaurants to put on a series of fundraising events throughout April, Parkinson's Awareness Month. She also serves as a firsthand resource on Parkinson's for students and faculty. Even as they impart medical knowledge about her disease, she can explain how it feels to live with it. Parkinson's is a progressive degenerative disease that causes people to lose control of their movements as a result of the deterioration of … Continue reading

Stem cells offer hope for autism – CNN

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2017

It wasn't always so. Just a couple years ago, Ryleigh, 11, was scared of her sister when she'd throw tantrums and screaming fits. "She would've fought and kicked," Ryleigh says, noting that it wouldn't have been possible to sit like this next to Gracie. Gracie, 7, interrupts: "I don't even remember it." "We do," says her mother, Gina Gregory. Gracie has autism, a condition that affected nearly every aspect of her family's life after she was diagnosed at 2. But a new study is offering hope for the Gregorys and families like them. The results were impressive: More than two-thirds of the children showed reported improvements. A larger second trial is underway, one its researchers hope will lead to long-term treatment for children with autism. But for the Gregorys, the change in their daughter has been monumental. Gone are the days of Gracie throwing fits in long lines at Disney World or during dinner at restaurants. When a tantrum intruded on family outings, her mom and dad wished they had T-shirts that said "My kid has autism" to ward off judgmental stares. During autism therapy sessions, Gracie would kick, scream, spit and hit at her occupational therapist. "It was horrible … Continue reading

First-Ever Progressive MS Treatment Has Been Approved by the FDA – Futurism

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2017

In BriefThe FDA has approved the first and only treatment that fightsboth relapsing and primary progressive forms of multiple sclerosis. Now patients with the progressive form of MS have a treatmentoption that could prevent permanent disability. B Cell Targeted Therapy On March 28, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new drug called Ocrevus (ocrelizumab), the first and only treatment that fights both relapsing and primary progressive forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Ocrelizumab represents a shift in focus for MS drug design, as it is a first-in-class therapy that specifically targets CD20-positive B cells thought to be linked to myelin and axonal nerve damage. Until now, treatments and research had been targeting T cells alone, which is not as effective. Approximately 400,000 people in the U.S. and more than 2 million worldwide suffer from MS, a chronic disease for which there is no cure. MS is characterized by abnormal attacks by the immune system on myelin sheaths of nerve cells in the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord. The myelin sheath supports and insulates the nerve cells. When it is attacked, it becomes inflamed and eventually sustains damage. Symptoms of damage to the myelin sheath include fatigue, pain, muscle … Continue reading

FDA Approves First Drug To Treat Primary Progressive MS | Care2 … – Care2.com

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2017

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approveda first-of-its-kind treatment that can halt the progress of aggressive MS symptoms. Heres what you need to know about this important drug therapy. While various MS treatments already exist on the market, options for those with primary progressive MS, have been incredibly limited. Primary progressive MS differs from the relapsing and remitting variety in that symptoms like muscle weakness and loss of motor function gradually worsen, rather than emergingas sudden attacks. Available treatments canhelp manage specific symptoms of the disease, but none on the market have been able to target the progressive debilitation caused by this variety of MS until now. A newly approved drug, known asOcrevus, is given through an intravenous infusion by a health care professional every six months. In trials the drug showed a significant ability to interrupt the cycle of relapses for those with the more commonly understood relapsing and remitting MS. In addition, Ocrevus displayedwhat has been described as a modest ability to slow deterioration inpatients with primary progressive MS. While that might not sound particularlyencouraging, health experts claimthat it is a significant step forward. Multiple sclerosis can have a profound impact on a persons life, Dr. Billy … Continue reading

A new treatment is available for multiple sclerosis patients. Amber Lee, KTVU , KXVA 12:20 PM. CDT April 03, 2017 We spoke with a woman whos been living with MS for 15 years. She says this is a life-changing disease ad that much more research needs to be done. MS is a horrible disease, Carol Schumacher said. Schumacher was diagnosed with progressive MS in 2002. She says the newly approved drug, Ocrelizumab by Genetech, is significant because no one knows the cause of MS nor is there a cure. Any bit of hope for improvement is significant in our lives. The disease can lead to paralysis and cognitive disease. It certainly changed my life dramatically. I had to look at my life ending in a wheelchair and severely debilitated. She says she wasnt able to walk more than two blocks without assistance and designed her home to accommodate an elevator. Its the most common crippler of young to middle age adults, with the exception of brain injuries, Doctor Stephen Hauser said. Dr. Hauser, the chairman of UCSFs neurology department, oversaw the clinical trials for the drug. He says there are other drugs that treat MS, but Ocrelizumab is the most … Continue reading
