Stanford launches virtual reality cardiology apps to help kids understand conditions, procedures – iMedicalApps

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2017

Cardiologists with Childrens Heart Center at Stanford are developing more uses of virtual reality (VR) technology in healthcare. With a goal of developing a comprehensive VR program for use in pediatric care, the hospital has partnered with both clinicians and VR designers (Lighthaus Inc) on three new projects: With an Oculus Rift headset and Touch VR controllers, the Stanford Virtual Heart allows users to view a detailed, 3D heart model. It can be manipulated by viewers, letting them see not just the outside, but also inside of the heart, complete with blood flow. Target audience is students (used by the Stanford University School of Medicine) and patients. Specifically, the Virtual Heart allows users to view congenital heart defects, and learn how such defects may impair heart function. Given the tricky anatomy of this very 3D organ, having it viewable in VR allows physicians to demonstrate the impact of congenital defects to patients and their families in a much more detailed fashion. Imagine the fear and anxiety that undergoing a cardiac catheterization may provoke. Much of this may be due to the unfamiliarity with the procedure. Project Brave Heart hopes to fix this through sending patients an education VR tour of … Continue reading

DSM ‘excited’ by biotechnology opportunites, president says – FoodBev.com

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2017

The president of DSM Food Specialties, Ilona Haaijer, has told FoodBev that shes really excited to be able to offer laboratory and scale-up facilities as part of its new biotechnology centre in the Netherlands. The company unveiled the Rosalind Franklin Biotechnology Center on its Delft campus earlier, where more than 400 scientists will advance the companys research into food enzymes, cultures, bio-preservatives and taste ingredients for the global food industry. Alongside significant investments in robotics and automation, the centre includes space for start-ups to explore and scale up their concepts in partnership with DSM Food Specialties. At the opening: Alex Clere There was a general buzz, a sense of excitement at the unveiling of DSMs imposing glass biotechnology centre this morning. DSMs scientists had already moved in, keen to give visitors an impression of the new equipment some the result of millions of euros worth of investment and collaborative spaces in action. Ahead of the unveiling ceremony, DSM Food Specialties president Ilona Haaijer told me which of the companys products she thought were particularly pertinent, given the state of the food industry at the moment. Its MaxiLact product, which removes lactose from a product while delivering additional sugar reductions, was … Continue reading

Impact Of FDA Breakthrough Therapy Designation Speculative Biotechnology Stock Performance – Seeking Alpha

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2017

Breakthrough Therapy Designation is described on the FDA website as "a process designed to expedite the development and review of drugs that are intended to treat a serious condition and preliminary evidence indicates that the drug may demonstrate substantial improvement over available therapy on a clinically significant endpoint(s)." It was signed into law in 2012, with the first full approval of a breakthrough designation candidate being only one year later. As of March 30, 2017, FDA has granted breakthrough therapy designation to 170 of the 505 total requests, and eventually approved 55 breakthrough therapy designated products. The concept makes sense. If a new drug that aims to treat serious and life-threatening conditions shows unprecedented effect in early clinical trials, patients should not have to wait to receive treatment. A group called Friends of Cancer Research worked with partners in advocacy, regulation, drug development, and bipartisan congressional champions to take breakthrough therapy designation from concept to an expedited FDA development program. This ensures patient access to revolutionary drugs is as quick and effective as possible. A drug that receives breakthrough therapy designation is eligible for all FDA fast track features, intensive FDA guidance on an efficient development program (as early as … Continue reading

SDSU Speaker to address topic Biotechnology: Friend or Foe in Fighting World Hunger – Farm Forum

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2017

SDSU College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences BROOKINGS The South Dakota State University Swine Club, along with various campus organizations and industry partners, will host a presentation by Julie Borlaug on April 12 to address the controversy surrounding the use of biotechnology in food production. Her presentation takes place at 7:00 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center on the SDSU campus. There is no charge to attend the event, but a free-will donation of canned goods for the Brookings Food Pantry is appreciated. As society moves farther and farther away from modern production agriculture, it creates a potential disconnect between the people who raise the food and the ones that consume it, explains Madelyn Regier, SDSU Swine Club president and an agricultural education and animal science major. The SDSU Swine Club believes that it is essential for consumers and the general public to better understand modern agriculture so we can all work together in feeding the worlds growing population in a safe and sustainable manner. Julie Borlaug is the granddaughter of Norman E. Borlaug, known as the father of the Green Revolution. She serves as the assistant director of partnerships at the Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M … Continue reading

LEGO Liquid Handler and Big Biology – Hackaday

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2017

A career as a lab biologist can take many forms, but the general public seems to see it as a lone, lab-coated researcher sitting at a bench, setting up a series of in vitro experiments by hand in small tubes or streaking out a little yeast on an agar plate.Thats not inaccurate at all all of us lab rats have done time with a manual pipettor while trying to keep track of which tube in the ice bucket gets which solution. Its tedious stuff. But because biology experiments generally scale well, and because more data often leads to better conclusions, life science processes can quickly grow beyond what can be handled manually. Ive seen this time and again in my 25 years in science, from my crude grad school attempts to miniaturize my assays and automate data collection to the multi-million dollar robotic systems I built in my career in the pharmaceuticalindustry. Biology can get pretty big in a hurry. Another day at the office. By Maggie Bartlett, National Human Genome Research Institute [Public domain], via Wikimedia CommonsBeing able to do hundreds of experiments at the click of a mouse is remarkably powerful, but the expense of the equipment involved … Continue reading

A life of impractical dreams: from biology to bronze work – Bangor Daily News

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2017

Imagine spending countless hours working on a piece of art that is destined to be destroyed. Mangled. Hacked up and tossed aside. All that will remain of your original work is a skeleton of foam, aluminum wire and wood alongside a big pile of clay. This is the reality sculptor David Smus works within every day. After months of intricate detail work and painstaking care, he sacrifices a perfect clay sculpture for the opportunity to create within what is arguably one of the most permanent art forms there is: bronze. As dramatic as it sounds, its all just part of the lost-wax process of metal casting. To get to the bronze end product, Davids clay sculptures are coated with rubber and plaster to make a negative mold, and often they are cut up into more manageable pieces or torn apart in the process. It actually gets kind of hair-raising because you put all this time and attention into an original, and then the idea is to, like, hack it up when youre making the mold, he says with a laugh and a shake of his head from his kitchen table in Harmony, Maine. Its kind of a nervous part of … Continue reading
