Momentum is only as good or as bad as the next days starting pitcher. Well, today, the markets appear to have an ace on the hill. The Dow rebounded after a tough eight-day losing stretch, and the other indexes are also up. Our momentum stays on track with the latest insight from Jon Chesto and roundup of the other top business news for Tuesday, March 28. Chesto Means Business Advertisement Generating discussion:Is the MBTA finally ready to start leaving diesel trains in the dust? That question will likely come up at the transit agency in the coming months, after oversight board member Steve Poftak raised the issue of converting the diesel-fueled commuter rail system to electric power in a meeting last week. Poftak later told me hes trying to get some answers beforepreparing a vehicle purchase planfor the T by July. He says hes keeping an open mind, and doesnt favor either fuel source yet. Supporters of electric trains point to the reduction in air pollution, a goal that would help the state meet its aggressive greenhouse-gas limits. Theres also the possibility of speedier service, with less time lost for accelerating away from each station. Electricity could be crucial if … Continue reading

The Eczema Company to Donate Profits to Fight Chronic Childhood Illness – Benzinga

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2017

10-20% of children in North America have eczema, one of many preventable conditions on the rise. The Eczema Company has partnered with Documenting Hope to prove childhood illnesses like asthma, ADHD and allergies can be reversed. Montreal, Quebec (PRWEB) March 28, 2017 The Eczema Company announced it will donate 1% of every sale to a non-profit dedicated to reversing chronic childhood illnesses. The donation program is the brainchild of Jennifer Roberge, founder of The Eczema Company, which provides natural eczema treatments for children and adults. "I fully believe that the work of Documenting Hope is a cornerstone in changing how we approach chronic childhood disease. Instead of managing and suppressing symptoms, we need to shift the way we think about disease. We need to look at the whole body as a beautiful, complex puzzle with various pieces and moving parts that are unique to each individual. That's what Documenting Hope is all about and the reason we're supporting it." Roberge knows about these issues personally. Her son, Tristan, was diagnosed with eczema at three months old. His skin continued to worsen and at age three his body was 90 percent covered in what looked like severe burns. After years of … Continue reading

Her parents were told their newborn would never walk - but just look at Gillian Craig now. The 35-year-old medical receptionist, who has cerebral palsy, has always refused to let her condition become an impediment. It's a mindset that has seen her racing ahead of competitors - and not just in everyday life. Despite having difficulties with lower limb balance and coordination, the Magheramorne woman has completed the last of eight races in the popular Born 2 Run, Run Forest Run series. Speaking following her "massive personal achievement", Gillian - who has a twin sister who is unaffected by the condition -said that running has changed the way she sees the world. "I was never meant to walk, never mind run," she said. "I'd never been sporty and with my condition I was the one who was always given a head start on sports day when I was at school. "But then one day I did my local park run and I suppose it all really started from there. "In the past two years I've made so many friends through running, it has turned my life around and I've even become a bit of a celebrity as the girl from … Continue reading

First, let me tell you I dont know much about cerebral palsy, but Im learning. Google tells me it is a term used for a group of disorders that affect a persons ability to move. Its a lifelong condition that can affect body movement, muscle control, posture, balance, etc. Some people may also have visual, learning, hearing, speech, epilepsy and intellectual impairments. A recent day trip opened our eyes to some of the daily barriers faced by people with mobility challenges. A few years ago a friend asked if I would drive to Windsor to consider window treatments for a house. At the time I didnt know that she kept a house there just to use for weekends with her daughter. Pat explained that her daughter, Cara, had cerebral palsy and was in a small options home. As I asked more questions I learned that the condition was caused from birth trauma. Cara also has visual impairment. One weekend my husband and I journeyed to Windsor to look at the windows. When we arrived we were introduced to a lovely young lady. Cara wasnt a bit shy, and had lots of questions for us. It seems she loves dates not … Continue reading

InVivo’s Inspire study: 7th patient reports improvement after spinal … – Becker’s Orthopedic & Spine

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2017

InVivo Therapeutics enrolled another patient in its INSPIRE study of the Neuro-Spinal Scaffold for spinal cord injury patients. Here are five key notes: 1. The most recent patient is the seventh out of 11 patients who reported an AIS grade improvement at the one-month follow-up after the procedure. The trial's conversion rate is currently 63.6 percent. The patient improved from AIS A to AIS B spinal cord injury between the one- and two-month evaluations. 2. The trial includes two other patients who haven't had their one-month visit yet, but the conversion rate is already higher than published rates for other SCI treatments, which is below 25 percent. 3. In addition to AIS conversion, the patient reported substantial improvement in sensory and motor function; before surgery the patient had T12 neurological level of injury with some spared bilateral sensation at the front of the legs and unilateral palpable hip muscle contraction but couldn't move the legs. However, two months after treatment the patient could move his hips and knees bilaterally and regained some sensory function in almost all regions of the lower back, feet and back of the body below the waist. 4. The Neurovascular Program Director and Principal Investigator at … Continue reading

Pharmacologic treatment of Parkinson disease – UpToDate

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2017

INTRODUCTION The array of pharmacologic and surgical treatments available for the treatment of idiopathic (or Lewy body) Parkinson disease (PD) is broader than for any other degenerative disease of the central nervous system. Management of individual patients requires careful consideration of a number of factors, including the patient's symptoms and signs, age, stage of disease, degree of functional disability, and level of physical activity and productivity. Treatment can be divided into pharmacologic, nonpharmacologic, and surgical therapy. The pharmacologic treatment of PD can be further divided into neuroprotective and symptomatic therapy. In practice, nearly all of the available treatments are symptomatic in nature and do not appear to slow or reverse the natural course of the disease. However, several potential neuroprotective agents for PD have shown some promise in animals and/or humans and are undergoing further investigation. Neuroprotective therapy for PD is discussed in greater detail separately. (See "Neuroprotective therapy for Parkinson disease".) The routine medical management of PD is reviewed here. The nonpharmacologic management of PD, including education, support, exercise, and nutrition, is discussed separately. (See "Nonpharmacologic management of Parkinson disease".) Treatment of advanced PD, particularly the complications associated with long-term levodopa therapy, and management of the comorbid problems including … Continue reading

Local group ‘shakes things up’ for Parkinson’s treatment – WHIZ

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2017

ZANESVILLE, Ohio-One local group is shaking things up when it comes to treating Parkinsons disease. All Shook UP is the Zanesville Parkinsons group. They pride themselves on their treatment for Parkinsons symptoms and movement disorders; which they do in a unique and fun way. Amy Dunn, President of All Shook UP, said they serve patients from five counties. Theycome here to get some exercise relief from Parkinsons. Exercise is a treatment, it is a medicine for Parkinsons and people need to know that, get out and exercise, said Dunn. Dunn said the exercise treatment stretches the muscles to ensure atrophy doesnt set in and mobility is not lost. The group works with therapists who are trained specifically in Parkinsons exercise; a treatment she can attest to first-hand. This exercise class has benefited me to the point that my neurologist was freaked out he said you should be getting worse, I dont think you have Parkinsons. Exercise does that much for me, said Dunn. The group exercises twice a week. The IBEW provides the location for their boxing class and strength class on Tuesdays. And on Thursdays the Zanesville Fraternal Order of Eagles sponsors their aquatic class at the Muskingum Recreation … Continue reading

Treating Parkinson’s Disease with Cannabis – Marijuana.com (blog)

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2017

Excerpt from Cannabis Revealed: How the worlds most misunderstood plant is healing everything from chronic pain to epilepsy Parkinsons disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects motor function and coordination. PD results from the death of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the area of the brain in the basal ganglia called the substantia nigra, an area responsible for movement. The cause of PD in most cases is unknown. However, a small percentage of cases are genetic. There are some environmental risk factors that have been associated with increased risk of PD, including pesticide exposure and head injury. PD patients suffer with tremor, rigidity, slowness of movement, and postural instability. Patients can also have depression, cognitive decline, sleep disorders, and occasionally psychosis. The mainstay of treatment is medications, rehabilitation with exercise and occupational therapy, and surgery in advanced cases. There is limited scientific literature on the effectiveness of medical cannabis for treatment of PD symptoms. One study reported no improvement in tremor with smoked cannabis. (1) In a survey of 339 patients with PD in the Czech Republic, 25% reported experimenting with cannabis to treat symptoms. Almost half of those using cannabis reported improvement with at least once-a-day use. Use … Continue reading
