Clinical characteristics of bladder cancer in patients with spinal cord injury: the experience from a single centre. – UroToday

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017

Life expectancy for people with spinal cord injury has shown a marked increase due to modern advances in treatment methods and in neuro-urology. However, since life expectancy of people with paralysis increases, the risk of developing of urinary bladder cancer is gaining importance. Single-centre retrospective evaluation of patient data with spinal cord injuries and proven urinary bladder cancer and summary of the literature. Between 1998 and 2014, 24 (3 female, 21 male) out of a total of 6599 patients with spinal cord injury were diagnosed with bladder cancer. The average age at bladder cancer diagnosis was 57.67years, which is well below the average for bladder cancer cases in the general population (male: 73, female: 77). All but one patient had a latency period between the onset of the spinal paralysis and tumour diagnosis of more than 10years. The median latency was 29.83years. The median survival for these patients was 11.5months. Of the 24 patients, 19 (79%) had muscle invasive bladder cancer at T2 at the time of diagnosis. The type of neurogenic bladder (neurogenic detrusor overactivity or acontractility) and the form of bladder drainage do not appear to influence the risk. Long-term indwelling catheter drainage played only a minor role … Continue reading

NHS refuses to fund physio to help cerebral palsy sufferer Ben Baddeley walk pain-free – Mirror.co.uk

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017

The family of cerebral palsy sufferer Ben Baddeley have spoken of their despair after the NHS refused to fund his treatment. North Staffs Clinical Commissioning Group has told Amy and Gary Baddeley they will not pay for the vital physio Ben needs to walk without pain. Mirror readers helped to raise 20,000 to privately fund two selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) operations cancelled by the NHS due to Tory cuts in Feb 2014. Family, friends, and supporters gave another 25,000 for follow up treatment. But the Baddeleys have now run out money, and may make a bid to get the 11,000 fee for Bens first op returned, as it was cancelled by the NHS at the very last minute. They were told to write to the Parliamentary Ombudsman if they disagree with the funding decision. Amy, 32, of Silverdale, Staffs., said: We are in contact with the gentleman who paid 11,000 for that first op and in his opinion the NHS should return the money. Ben is currently suffering with his hips and he really needs that to be treated before further damage is done. His account is currently empty. We are waiting on a donation via cheque to clear so … Continue reading

Appeal to help four-year-old girl receive treatment to walk on her own two feet – Oxfordshire Guardian

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017

The family of a four-year old girl suffering from cerebral palsy are appealing for help in funding vital therapy to allow the little girl to walk independently. Lenuta Magda and husband Nicolaeare hoping to reach a total of 30,000 to fund Alinas physiotherapy and specialist oxygen therapy to help her lead a more normal life. At the moment, the plucky youngster has splints on both legs and on her right arm and relies on a walking stick. The family, who live in Oxford, are hoping that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) will help achieve the best outcome for her future quality of life. The therapy, which takes up to three hours a session, enhances the bodys natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber. The family are planning on travelling to Romania to undergo the treatment, costing around 100 a day for 15-20 days. The therapy is significantly cheaper abroad than it is in the UK, costing up to 300 a day, but it needs to be repeated every four to six months to achieve the best outcome. When asked how her daughter is coping, Lenuta said: Shes amazing. She goes to oxygen therapy for three … Continue reading

How a protein called ‘NFL’ could help the NFL with brain injuries – Washington Post

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017

Brain injuries are a danger in many sports, but for none more than football and its most profitable enterprise, the National Football League. The NFL is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a concussion-lawsuit settlement and has poured tens of millions into research on measuring and preventing head trauma. Now some scientists are using an NFL-backed technology to examine blood samples for proteins that have been shown to correlate with concussion and other injuries. One of the most intriguing of these proteins, which could help create better tests for traumatic brain injury, is called neurofilament light or, as its known for short, NFL. Thats right, a protein called NFL may wind up helping the NFL address its most vexing medical problem. It's just a remarkable coincidence, said Kevin Hrusovsky, chief executive of Quanterix, a company that has received $800,000 in grant money from the NFL through the league's Head Health Challenge partnership with GE. Quanterix's technology allows users to zero in on molecules with such precision that Hrusovsky likened it to being able to see a grain of sand in 2,000 Olympic-size swimming pools. That is crucial, because only tiny amounts of the proteins, referred to as biomarkers, dribble … Continue reading

MicroRNA Treatment Restores Nerve Insulation, Limb Function in … – PR Newswire (press release)

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017

Study authors administered miR-219 into the spinal columns and cerebrospinal fluid of mice with nerve coatings damaged by a chemical called lysolecithin or by autoimmune encephalomyelitis induced in the animals, which is used to model MS. Treatment with miR-219 reinvigorated the function of damaged cells called oligodendrocytes that produce myelin, which allowed the substance to reform and reinsulate nerves. "We show that miR-219 targets multiple processes that inhibit myelin formation after nerve injury by the disease process, and that treatment with this microRNA partially restores myelination and limb function," said Q. Richard Lu, PhD, lead investigator and scientific director of the Brain Tumor Center at Cincinnati Children's. "It is conceivable that augmenting miR-219 treatment with other blockers of myelin regrowth may provide a multipoint treatment strategy for people with demyelinating diseases like MS." The authors stress that because their study was conducted in laboratory mouse models of disease, their data cannot at this stage be applied to clinical treatment in humans. Lu's laboratory studies how certain glial cell subtypes of the central and peripheral nervous system form, participate in regeneration and how they can transform into cancerous cells. Molecular Silencer MicroRNAs are short segments of RNA encoded on the chromosomes … Continue reading

MicroRNA Treatment Restores Nerve Insulation, Limb Function in Mice with MS – Newswise (press release)

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017

Newswise CINCINNATI Scientists partially re-insulated ravaged nerves in mouse models of multiple sclerosis (MS) and restored limb mobility by treating the animals with a small non-coding RNA called a microRNA. In a study published online March 27 in Developmental Cell, researchers at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center report that treatment with a microRNA called miR-219 restarted production of a substance called myelin in nerves of the central nervous system. Myelin forms a protective sheath around nerves, allowing them to efficiently transmit electrical impulses that stimulate movement. Study authors administered miR-219 into the spinal columns and cerebrospinal fluid of mice with nerve coatings damaged by a chemical called lysolecithin or by autoimmune encephalomyelitis induced in the animals, which is used to model MS.
