Researchers announce promising results for Parkinson’s patients – KETV Omaha

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2017

OMAHA, Neb. People taking part in clinical trials for a new drug to treat Parkinson's disease are showing signs of motor skill improvement, researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center said. "You never know when you're going to come down with something. You have to stand up and say, 'I have to beat this,'" Tim Hoffman, 66, said. Hoffman has lived in the grip of Parkinson's for more than a decade. But a new breakthrough drug, announced Thursday by UNMC researchers could change that. "The goal of the medication and what we saw in this study is to help patients with Parkinson's disease to function better," Dr. Pamela Santamaria of Neurology Consultants of Nebraska said. The drug is called Sargramostim. It treats the causes of the disease instead of only the symptoms. "Our research has shown how we can give a patient a medication that can help change their immune system, and therefore affect the total progression and the outcome of the Parkinson's disease," Santamaria said. Hoffman was one of the patients who took part in the clinical study. He received daily treatment injections for two months and said he's started to see a positive change. "I felt better and … Continue reading

Peace Bridge to go green tonight to mark Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day – Buffalo News

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2017

The Peace Bridge, at the request of the Make Lemon Aide Foundation, will be bathed in green lighting Saturday to mark National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day. Lauren Walier, 18, began the nonprofit foundation after she learned six years ago that there was little federal funding for a condition that she and 17 millions others have across the country. Walier and her family live outside Atlanta, but her parents, Sherry and Peter Walier, are Hamburg natives, and many of the foundations activities take place in Western New York. The Walier family looks to improve CP treatment in Buffalo using some of the proceeds raised in Run/Walk/Roll events in the region. This years fourth annual event will take place June 11 at Wilkeson Pointe at the Outer Harbor. For more information, visit makelemonaide.org. Also Saturday, the Niagara Falls Illumination Board will turn off the lights on the Horseshoe and American falls from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. to mark the World Wildlife Funds global Earth Hour initiative and help raise awareness and support for action on the issue of climate change. A young boy with a rare form of cerebral palsy is able to play with his friends at school for the first time thanks to a new powered wheelchair. Born prematurely at 35 weeks, Alfie Porter-Smith was diagnosed with a rare form of cerebral palsy at just nine-months-old. The condition left him floppy and unable to walk unaided. A lack of strength in his right hand also meant he struggled to use a manual wheelchair to power himself along. What Alfie really wanted to be able to do was run around with his friends and keep up with their fun and games, Fiona said. The family heard about Designability, a national charity which provides life-changing assistive technologies to people with disabilities. Posted: Published on March 26th, 2017

Comments(0) A fundraising campaign has been launched in aid of the family of a mum killed in the Westminster terror attack. Married mother-of-two Aysha Frade, 43, was among those killed when a car careered across Westminster Bridge on Wednesday (March 22) afternoon. Her story touched Shane Yerrell, 32, from Waltham Abbey, who has set up a Justgiving page in her memory. "I went to the scene to pay my respects," he said. "I read about Aysha, she was a mum on her way to pick up her kids that really got me. "No-one should have to be taken away from their children. "I was touched by her situation." Shane received a British Citizen award at Westminster just a couple of months ago, and noticed the contrast in the atmosphere, but still found people banding together in defiance of terrorism. "When something like this happens, people pull together," he added. Former Jets Namath, Martin Raise Awareness About Head Injuries – Long Island Press

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2017

Former Jets legend Joe Namath estimates that he suffered five concussions in his career. Decades later, another Jets great, Curtis Martin, remembers one particularly devastating hit that had him so dazed that he walked into the wrong huddle. Islanders hero Bob Nystrom said he suffered six concussions, including one that had the newlywed briefly forgetting his wifes name. These New York sports legends and others gathered at NYIT-Old Westbury this week to bring attention to the massive scale of head injuries in sports as part of the annual Head Injury Awareness Celebrity Sports Forum organized by the Hauppauge-based Head Injury Association. The event, which coincided with Brain Injury Awareness Month, drew a large crowd that included high school coaches and various professionals. Namath and his fellow athletes were part of a panel using their celebrity status to highlight the need for more research and education on concussions. Experts were also on hand to discuss new treatment options, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, also known as HBOT, which is commonly associated with healing wounds. We need to discover more about our brains, we need to find out how to heal them, Namath told the crowd. So, lets stay after that. Lets stay … Continue reading

Credit: Marvin 101/Wikipedia In the relentless battle against multiple sclerosis (MS), U of A researchers recently discovered an entirely new cellular mechanisman underlying defect in brain cellsthat may to be blame for the disease, and a potential hallmark that may be a target for future treatment. The finding opens the door to a brand new avenue of study in the battle against the cryptic autoimmune disorder that strikes more Canadians than any other nationality worldwide, said Fabrizio Giuliani, study co-author, U of A neurologist and medical director of the Northern Alberta MS Clinic. "Scientists have been pointing to the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, as a possible link to MS, but have not been able to decipher how they malfunction. Ours is the first study that combines clinical and lab experiments to explain how mitochondria become defective in MS patients," said Thomas Simmen, study co-author and cell biology professor. Specifically, using human brain tissue samples, the researchers discovered how two sub-components within a cell are miscommunicating in patients with MS, and identified how at least one protein … Continue reading

The researchers' findings suggest that men should stay away at least for now from clinics that already offer stem cell treatment for erectile dysfunction. CIPhotos / Getty Images/iStockphoto The researchers' findings suggest that men should stay away at least for now from clinics that already offer stem cell treatment for erectile dysfunction. But their findings also suggest that men who become impotent after prostate surgery shouldn't give up hope. "After six months, eight of the men could initiate sexual intercourse," said Dr. Martha Haahr of Odense University Hospital. "What we have done establishes that this technique can lead to men recovering a spontaneous erection in other words, without the use of other medicines, injections, or implants," Haahr added. Related: Erectile dysfunction is very common, and it's led to a booming market in drugs such as Viagra and Cialis, as well as an industry providing penis implants and other treatments. The dysfunction is caused by a variety of factors. Heart disease and diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the penis, for example. And prostate cancer treatment can damage the nerves and blood vessels in the surrounding area. A study published earlier this month found more than half of men lost … Continue reading

Stem cell treatments can go wrong – Jamaica Observer

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2017

Stem cells are the foundation of all our body cells before they differentiate to become specialised cells that grow into our tissues and organs, such as kidney cells, muscle cells, nerve cells, and so on. They commonly come from two sources: The embryo (embryonic stem cells formed in early development after the human egg is fertilised by a sperm); and adult tissue (adult stem cells, such as those existing in bone marrow to later differentiate to form red blood cells, white blood cells and other components of the blood). The use of human embryonic stems cells for treatment or research is often frowned upon by some people, as they regard the human embryo as a person that should not be discarded after such endeavours. Consequently, much scientific work has recently been focused on the use of adult stem cells. THE USE OF STEM CELLS Stem cells may be beneficial in treating diseases that are amenable to cell replacement. However, this is still a young science, and belief that a particular treatment helps two or three people does not convince the scientific community or the whole society that the treatment will work for everyone so afflicted. Scientific proof comes from conducting … Continue reading
