The Sindh health minister says the facility will be established after cabinet approval HYDERABAD:After a delay of several months, the bill for establishing a government institute of cardiology in Hyderabad will be taken up in the provincial cabinet meeting on March 27. However, uncertainty still looms over approval for the much desired health facility for a city of around three million people due to the alleged reluctance of Sindh Health Minister Dr Sikandar Mandhro. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the angiography unit at theCardiothoracic Surgery Department of Hyderabads Liaquat University Hospital on Saturday, Dr Mandhro appeared ambivalent about the institute. My responsibility is to inform the cabinet that the people are demanding these institutes, he said, referring toMehran Institute of Heart and Chest Diseases in Hyderabad and another institute for Karachi. March 22, 2017 at 8:53 am | The Associated Press Print Article Fateful days changed the destiny of cardiology doctor By AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION NEWS Two life-changing events helped mold Dr. Arie Szatkowski, an ebullient, shaggy-haired New Yorker, into a cardiac crusader of the Mid-South. When he was 23, his father, who was a doctor, died suddenly of a heart attack far too young. He was my role model, and I was already applying to medical school, Szatkowski said. After he died, I knew I was going to go into cardiology. A few years later, in the first week of a fellowship at Columbia, it was time for the young doctors to practice administering echocardiograms, an ultrasound test that maps the hearts structure and function. He volunteered to be the subject. I get on the gurney and the professor starts looking and looking more carefully, he said. And he says, Do you know you have atrial septal defect? He didnt. The doctor was referring to a hole in the wall between the hearts two upper chambers, a congenital condition often not discovered until it causes serious problems. It was a stroke of luck I went into the right field, he … Continue reading

Agricultural biotechnologies are being applied to an increasing extent in crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture and agro-industries, to alleviate hunger and poverty, assist in adaptation to climate change and maintain the natural resource base. They have not sufficiently benefited smallholder farmers and producers and consumers. More research and developmentof agricultural biotechnologies should be focused on the needs of smallholders. In order to produce food in a sustainable way for an additional 2 billion people by 2050, a business-as-usual approach will not be sufficient. This is especially true in the face of climate change and other forces threatening natural resources like biodiversity, land and water that are essential for food production and agriculture, including forestry and fisheries. To meet these challenges, science and the application of biotechnologies as well as conventional technologies will play a key role. FAO recognizes that when appropriately integrated with other technologies for the production of food, agricultural products and services, biotechnology can be of significant assistance in meeting the needs of an expanding and increasingly urbanized population. Top 6 Everyday Products Using Biotechnology – The Merkle

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2017

Biotechnology is a popular trend that can be found in various aspects of our everyday lives. While it is true biotechnology is a very complicated concept to grasp, it is also one of the most promising technologies to be found today. Biotechnology will help our society address some of its greatest challenges moving forward. Below are some very common use cases for biotechnology most people will have come in contact with already. It is anything but surprising to learn biotechnology has made a big impact on the medical sector over the past few years. Biotechnology, or more specifically, bio-processing, is used to develop new pharmaceuticals which are often difficult to produce due to purity quality control requirements. Some of the more popular biotech pharmaceuticals include Remicade, Rituxan, Prevarn, and Avastin. Very few consumers give fabrics a second thought, other than to determine whether the material would rub against the skin. Interestingly enough, most fabrics are dyed through a fermentation vat process. Biochemicals are very common in the production of dyes, polyester, and nylon. It is evident there is some form of biotechnology involved in every piece of synthetic clothing we wear today. Even though biofuel is not as popular as … Continue reading

An active member of various extracurriculars and a standout student, she strives to achieve her goals on a daily basis. Regarding academics, Ashley has taken on many rigorous classes throughout high school. Some include AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Statistics, Honors Biotechnology, and Honors American Lit. She is also in the TMHS Nursing Assistant Certification class. Her favorite class proved to be AP Biology. It was a lot of work, she states. But I found out the biology was my passion. In terms of extracurriculars, Ashley is on the yearbook staff, National Honor Society, and is a founding member and Co-President of the Red Cross Club. She also used to run track and cross country. Last year, Ashley and a few other students were inspired to start the Red Cross Club in order to provide a club and resource for students with an interest in the medical field. But there wasnt anything really for kids leaning towards the medical field, and since Im also interested in that, … Continue reading

Adapted DIY robotics kit gives STEM students tools to automate biology experiments – Stanford Medical Center Report

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2017

By combining the Lego Mindstorms robotics kit with a cheap and easy-to-find plastic syringe, the researchers created a set of liquid-handling robots that approach the performance of the far more costly automation systems found at universities and biotech labs. We really want kids to learn by doing, said Ingmar Riedel-Kruse, PhD, assistant professor of bioengineering. We show that with a few relatively inexpensive parts, a little training and some imagination, students can create their own liquid-handling robots and then run experiments on them so the students learn about engineering, coding and the wet sciences at the same time, he added. A paper describing the work was published March 21 inPLoS Biology. Riedel-Kruse is the senior author. The lead author is postdoctoral scholar Lukas Gerber. The robots are designed to pipette fluids from and into cuvettes and multiple-well plates types of plastic containers commonly used in laboratories. Depending on the specific design, the robots can handle liquid volumes far smaller than 1 microliter, a droplet about the size of a single coarse grain of salt. Riedel-Kruse believes that these Lego designs might even be useful for specific professional or academic liquid-handling tasks that normally require robots costing many thousands of dollars. … Continue reading

Brooklyntrailed Phoenixby 10 points after the first quarter, then head coach Kenny Atkinson called timeout to yell, scream and throw a clipboard to emphatically implore his team to play with passion and a bit more effort. The Nets responded by outscoring the Suns 104 to 66 the remainder of the game. Message received. After the game, Atkinson had a choice: Do we travel south to Washington, D.C., arrive late, have a shootaround in the morning, and takethe traditional path NBA teams follow when they … Continue reading

The case has been set for a plea hearing in June, with a provisional trial date in September. The arrested man has yet to enter a plea and we must not second-guess the facts in this tragic case. However, this was the third distressing instance of multiple family victimsnationally in just three weeks. And those only the ones known to any audience beyond the … Continue reading
