House likely to reject Kasich change to program helping state’s … – The Columbus Dispatch

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2017

Jim Siegel The Columbus Dispatch @phrontpage Facing a wave of opposition from medical professionals and families caring for the states sickest children, House Republicans plan to strip from the budget proposed changes to the Bureau of Children with Medical Handicaps. As part of his two-year, $66.9 billion budget, Gov. John Kasich proposed eliminating the bureau, slashing income eligibility in half for babies born after July 1, and shifting the program into Medicaid managed care. The bureau screens providers, assuring a broad network of experienced and available specialists, said Dr. Jim Duffee, who testified to lawmakers on behalf of the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Medicaid managed care plans do not have a similar provider network and cannot guarantee continuous care by qualified specialists, he said. The bureau pays for medicine, treatment and services not covered by insurance for more than 41,000 children with conditions such as cystic fibrosis, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Duffee said it is well positioned to fill a gap when confused and anguished parents are told their child has a serious developmental disorder. The cumbersome preauthorization process of Medicaid managed care often serves to delay or even deny timely, appropriate evaluation or treatment. The … Continue reading

What Are the ‘Essential Benefits’ on the AHCA Chopping Block? – 41 NBC News

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2017

Obamacares 10 essential health benefits cover basic services such as vaccines and pediatric visits Joe Raedle / Getty Images, file Heres a rundown of what they are: Most Americans get their health insurance through an employer, and most employer-sponsored plans offer most of these benefits as a matter of course. Fewer than 10 percent of Americans buy health insurance on the individual market and thats the market covered by the ACAs essential benefits. Pre-Obamacare, insurance companies could offer very cheap policies that either did not cover many conditions, or that charged a very high deductible or co-pay for such claims. Advocates for keeping in the essential health benefits clause say its the only way to make health insurance manageable and fair. Health insurance is confusing enough as is, writes Jeanne Lambrew, who worked on health reform under Obama and who is now at the Century Foundation. Rolling back benefit standards and allowing insurers to make coverage decisions would add to that confusion. And it would put millions of Americans at risk for having a health insurance card but remaining under-insured. House Speaker Paul Ryan said its about choice and lowering costs. Instead of imposing arrogant and paternalistic mandates, it would … Continue reading

Why it took Shannai years to get treatment for near-fatal illness – Illawarra Mercury

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2017

25 Mar 2017, 1:40 p.m. "I was scared I was going to be put in a box." How online therapy can help manage depression. It was an illness that almost claimed her life. There were days when she couldn't leave the house, or even get out of bed. But for years after she was diagnosed, Shannai Pearce was too afraid to get help. "I was scared I was going to be put in a box and labelled as nuts, and that was going to be it for the rest of my life," Ms Pearce said. Like one in 13 Australian children aged 11 to 17, Ms Pearce suffered from major depression. Yet up to 70 per cent of people reporting symptoms of depression will not seek treatment, a factor contributing to Australia's rising suicide rate. The stigma that persists around mental illness, the cost and availability of services, and difficulty scheduling appointments around busy lives can be barriers to getting the necessary treatment. And, as Ms Pearce said, "the symptoms of mental health issues also generally restrict people from seeking the help they need". That's why smartphones, laptops and tablets can be a lifeline, with a new study providing evidence … Continue reading

Using stem cells to treat erectile dysfunction – Deutsche Welle

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2017

There's new hope for men with erectile dysfunction. Danish researchers have found that stem cell therapy can help previously impotent men have spontaneous intercourse. The team led by Martha Haahr from Odense University Hospital in Denmark presented their findings at the European Association of Urology conference in London. Haahr: First to use man's own stem cells in ED treatment Haahr's team used stem cells taken from abdominal fat cells via liposuction and injected them into the penises of 21 trial participants. The men were able to be discharged from the clinic on the day of the procedure. Within six months of the initial treatment, eight of the men reported they had regained the ability to participate in penetrative sexual activity without using drugs like Viagra. "What we have done establishes that this technique can lead to men recovering a spontaneous erection - in other words, without the use of other medicines, injections or implants," Haahr said. Participants reported that the improvement has been maintained for a year. While the results presented at the conference only come from the early phase of the trial, the research team is beginning phase two with more participants to better evaluate the effectiveness and confirm … Continue reading
