Biology graduate publishes research on perception of elephant impact on ecosystem – WKU News

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

WKU biology graduate Adam Edge of Shepherdsville is the lead author of a paper titled Examining Human Perception of Elephants and Large Trees for Insights into Conservation of an African Savanna Ecosystem that has been published in the journal Human Dimensions of Wildlife. Adam Edge Edge, who was a student in the Honors College at WKU and a FUSE grant recipient, conducted the work in South Africa in conjunction with Dr. Michelle Henley, Co-Founder and Director of Elephants Alive, and under the tutelage of Dr. Jerry Daday, Associate Professor of Sociology and Executive Director of the Center for Faculty Development & the Online Learning Research Office, and his Honors thesis advisor Dr. Bruce A. Schulte, head of the Department of Biology. The study used a questionnaire to determine the perceptions of residents and tourists on elephants, large tree and elephant management practices in the Associate Private Nature Reserves around Kruger National Park in South Africa. Elephants modify savanna habitat by breaking and feeding on tree branches and even knocking down trees. The objective was to evaluate peoples perceptions toward elephants, a primary draw for tourism, and habitat with intact trees and those modified in form by elephants. Researchers adapt a DIY robotics kit to automate biology experiments – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

March 22, 2017 by Andrew Myers Elementary and secondary school students who later want to become scientists and engineers often get hands-on inspiration by using off-the-shelf kits to build and program robots. But so far it's been difficult to create robotic projects to foster interest in the "wet" sciences biology, chemistry and medicine so called because experiments in these field often involve fluids. Now, Stanford bioengineers have shown how an off-the shelf kit can be modified to create robotic systems capable of transferring precise amounts of fluids between flasks, test tubes and experimental dishes. By combining the Lego Mindstorms robotics kit with a cheap and easy-to-find plastic syringe, the researchers created a set of liquid-handling robots that approach the performance of the far more costly automation systems found at universities and biotech labs. "We really want kids to learn by doing," said Ingmar Riedel-Kruse, assistant professor of bioengineering, who led the team that reports its work in the journal PLoS Biology. "We show that with a few relatively inexpensive parts, a little training and some imagination, students can create their own liquid-handling robots and then run experiments on it so they learn about engineering, coding and the wet sciences at … Continue reading

Censored 16th century anatomy textbook could be root of vagina taboo – The Independent

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

A censored 16th century anatomy book may provide evidence that taboos slowed the development of knowledge of the female genitals, researchers have said. The 1559 edition of Thomas Gemini's Compediosa Totius Anatomie Delineatio features a depiction of a semi-dissected female torso, and the book's original owner has cut away a neat triangle of paper on which the vagina would have been drawn. It will be displayed in an exhibition at St John's College at the University of Cambridge, and curator Shelley Hughes said it may offer clues as to why knowledge of the female anatomy lagged behind that of the human body as a whole. She said the book's original owner was disturbed by its depiction of a semi-dissected female torso. We know this because the offending part, a neat triangle of paper on which the vagina would have been drawn, has been carefully cut away. She added: Sin and female flesh were held in close association in 16th century society with naked women often portrayed as the servants of Satan.Perhaps Christian Europe would have to overcome its shame over the female reproductive organs in order to discover more about their structure. Before the 16th century, many European academics believed that … Continue reading

I can remember lying in bed with her years ago and having conversations about our grandparents and now our grandparents are gone. We've gone through that together, and now our parents are getting older and we're going through that together. Every relationship has its ups and downs, but I'm glad I get to go through the ups and downs with her. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below 2. He and Keisha have five kids: Isabella (born in 1994), twins Maya and Kaila (1997), Eva (1999), and Jackson (2002). Our house is sort of like a nightclub, he told Good Housekeeping. We've got loud music and chaos and crowds. But really, we're pretty laid-back. Our kids are in a little band, and they like to play video games, and my wife and I do our best to live a low-key, non-Hollywood kind of life. With his wife and three of their … Continue reading
