Ulcerative Colitis Tx with Mesalamine in a Patient with Severe NSAID Hypersensitivity – Monthly Prescribing Reference (registration)

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

Ulcerative colitis (UC) affects greater than 900,000 Americans Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic condition that affects greater than 900,000 Americans and is also prevalent worldwide.1 In patients with UC, ulceration and inflammation of the colon leads to episodes of relapsing and remitting flares, making lifelong maintenance therapy necessary.1,2 Symptoms of UC often include abdominal pain and discomfort, rectal urgency, diarrhea containing blood, and tenesmus.2 Patients may also experience weight loss and feelings of fatigue.1 Diagnosis of UC requires both clinical evaluation as well as confirmation of the disease via colonoscopy and biopsy.2 Treatment of UC involves diet modification, initiation of medications, and surgical intervention, if necessary.1 Pharmacologic therapy of mild to moderate UC typically begins with orally or rectally administered mesalamine.2 Mesalamine, which is structurally similar to aspirin, decreases inflammation via inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) 1 and 2 enzymes. Because significant systemic absorption occurs with mesalamine, drug allergies are important to consider when treating a patient. Not only is the literature regarding the cross-reactivity between aspirin and mesalamine lacking, but published evidence about the relationship is also conflicting.2 Some research suggests that cross-reactivity between aspirin and mesalamine does not occur, while other reports state that a test dose should … Continue reading

Research to find treatments, alleviate patients stress by Nisha Dabhi | Mar 23 2017 | 23 hours ago Profs. Silvia Blemker and Shayn Peirce-Cottler in the Department of Biomedical Engineering received a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant will fund research on therapeutic outcomes for individuals with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy through multi-scale computer modeling techniques. DMD is a devastating but rare musculoskeletal genetic disorder, prevailing at a rate of one in every 3,500 male births. Individuals with DMD appear healthy for the first few years of their lives, Blemker said. However, around the age of three or four, symptoms begin to appear. Patients with DMD typically die around their early thirties. First, the muscles of the hip, pelvic area, thighs and shoulders become fatigued, and then skeletal muscles of the arms and legs begin to deteriorate. In even later stages, the disease affects heart and respiratory muscles impeding normal cardiovascular and breathing functions. DMD is caused by a mutation in the gene encoding dystrophin. Dystrophin is a large protein that supports muscle fiber strength and connects the cytoskeleton of a muscle fiber to the surrounding extracellular matrix and links actin filaments to other support proteins. … Continue reading

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp. (NVIV)today announced that Health Canada has approved the companys Investigational Testing Authorization application to commence a clinical study of the Neuro-Spinal Scaffold in patients with acute, complete (AIS A) cervical (C5-T1) spinal cord injuries (SCIs). InVivo currently is in late stage conversation with several site Research Ethics Boards and expects to announce its first Canadian site in the coming weeks. This approval is an important step towards our goal of redefining the life of the spinal cord injury patient, said Mark Perrin, InVivos CEO and Chairman. We are dedicated to helping as many SCI patients as we can, and this approval helps us to evaluate our investigational product in the most severe spinal cord injury cases, with neurologically complete cervical injuries involving impairment of the arms, hands, trunk, and legs. As I explain further in my CEOs Perspective, moving into the cervical spinal cord is exciting, since each level of the cervical spinal cord has a substantial functional impact. If the Neuro-Spinal Scaffold were able to preserve, remyelinate and/or regenerate just a small area of spinal cord, we believe this could have significant functional consequences. We look forward to bringing sites onboard in Canada … Continue reading

New Rochelle, NY A Phase I clinical trial that targeted individuals with new onset paraplegia to evaluate the safety of transplanting their own potentially neuroprotective Schwann cells into a trauma-induced spinal cord lesion showed no evidence of adverse effects after 1 year. This novel cell therapy approach for treating subacute thoracic spinal cord injury is described in an article in Journal of Neurotrauma, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available free on the Journal of Neurotrauma website until April 22, 2017. Kim Anderson, PhD, Allan Levi, MD, PhD, and coauthors from University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Bruce W. Carter Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Miami, FL) describe the design and results of the clinical trial in which they harvested Schwann cells from a nerve of each paralyzed patient, cultured them in the laboratory, and then injected them directly into the site of the spinal cord lesion within 72 days of injury. In the article entitled Safety of Autologous Human Schwann Cell Transplantation in Subacute Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury the authors present the results obtained from three different doses of Schwann cells and report no negative effects related to harvesting or … Continue reading

Milestone in Parkinson’s Treatment – KMTV – 3 News Now

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

Omaha, Neb. (KMTV) - Experts at UNMC are calling it a milestone. It's a drug that affects the immune system, already being used in bone marrow transplant patients. It now appears to be effective in treating Parkinson's disease. Researchers found that by injecting the drug, Sargramostim, into roughly twenty subjects, it sparked an immune transformation of diseased white blood cells into cells that protect and defend against brain injury. Dr. Howard Gendleman explained it in a slide presentation. His colleague, neurologist Dr. Pamela Santamaria, told 3NewsNow, " It's new. It's innovative. We've not seen anything like this before. It's going to be known global wide." The FDA has already approved the drug but not yet for Parkinson's patients. The brain disease leaves sufferers with tremors. It is more common in the Midwest. Exposure to pesticides can triple the risk. For sufferers like Bob Riley of Omaha, this treatment offers new hope. He said, " It's very exciting. It sounds like the answer might be coming a lot quicker than we expected. " The next step is phase two of this study. It will include more people involved who will likely take the drug in pill form. See the article here: … Continue reading

We’re About to Enter a New Era in Parkinson’s Disease Treatments – Futurism

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

Before we get to the therapeutic stuff, here is a reminder of the main problem people with Parkinsons disease face. Researchers are reasonably sure that the accumulation of a protein called alpha-synuclein is responsible for neurons dying in people with PD. However, there are two competing theories as to how it builds up andspreads, the threshold theoryandthe ascending theory(also called the prion hypothesis). The ascending theory states that alpha-synuclein spreads from cell to cell, infecting cells as the protein moves up through the brain. The threshold theory recently put forward by Dr. Ole Isacson and Dr. Simone Engelender, proposes that alpha-synuclein builds up independently in each affected cell. Regardless, an improved understanding of exactly how such proteins misfold and clump together is at the heart of the riddle that is Parkinsons as well asa long list of other diseases. Thankfully a number of labs around the world have been working on this sticky problem. Additionally, if anyone wants to help you can do so very easily from any computer, watch this video to learn how. The ongoing revolution in genetics is playing an increasingly important role in our understanding of the disease while also revealing whyit varies so much from patient to … Continue reading
