What Are ‘Essential Benefits’ in GOP Health Care Bill Debate? – NBCNews.com

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

Obamacare's 10 essential health benefits cover basic services such as vaccines and pediatric visits Joe Raedle / Getty Images, file Here's a rundown of what they are: Most Americans get their health insurance through an employer, and most employer-sponsored plans offer most of these benefits as a matter of course. Fewer than 10 percent of Americans buy health insurance on the individual market and that's the market covered by the ACA's essential benefits. Pre-Obamacare, insurance companies could offer very cheap policies that either did not cover many conditions, or that charged a very high deductible or co-pay for such claims. Advocates for keeping in the essential health benefits clause say it's the only way to make health insurance manageable and fair. "Health insurance is confusing enough as is," "Rolling back benefit standards and allowing insurers to make coverage decisions would add to that confusion. And it would put millions of Americans at risk for having a health insurance card but remaining under-insured." House Speaker Paul Ryan said it's about choice. "Instead of imposing arrogant and paternalistic mandates, it would increase choice and competition, creating a vibrant market where every American will have access to quality, affordable coverage," he There's another … Continue reading

State health hits back – Times LIVE

Representatives of six provincial health departments yesterday appeared before a joint sitting of parliament's standing committee on appropriations and the portfolio committee on health to discuss the delivery of health services. Some of the representatives raised the issue of high legal claims against their departments, which they said were mostly attributable to unscrupulous attorneys trying to cash in. The attorneys were said to have shifted their attention to state hospitals after the Road Accident Fund cracked down on the submission of inflated claims. Some of the provinces have contingent liabilities running into billions of rands. KwaZulu-Natal, which has the second-highest claims total after Gauteng, told the committee that its contingent liabilities for medical litigation was almost R10-billion. The province spent R243-million on claims in 2016-2017 - for which it had not budgeted. KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said the claims were not based only on allegations of negligence. Dhlomo said law firms advertised their services to encourage people to employ them if they felt they had received poor medical treatment from the state. He said lawyers were colluding with doctors to get patient files in order to lodge claims. Dhlomo said most of the claims against his department were birth- … Continue reading

Intrepid Spirit Center tackles TBIs – The Fort Campbell Courier

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

Since Fort Campbells Intrepid Spirit Center opened more than two years ago, it has allowed staff to take a multidisciplinary approach to treating traumatic brain injuries and associated conditions. The center consolidates many different specialties under one roof to optimize the efficiency of the treatment offered to patients. Elsewhere, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence close to Washington, other similar centers such as the one at Fort Hood, along with centers operated by the Navy and Marine Corps all have the same treatment philosophy as Fort Campbells Intrepid Spirit Center. The Intrepid Spirit Center is using the heightened awareness about brain injuries during the Brain Injury Awareness Month observances in March to increase education about TBI on Fort Campbell. The monthlong observance is sponsored by the Brain Injury Association of America and supported by the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center. Staff members from the center go to clinics and educate providers about TBI, said Dr. Lynn Giarrizzo, who has been at Fort Campbell since 2007, first as an active-duty officer where she served as chief of the anesthesiology department for two years at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital. As a civilian she came back and stood up the pain program … Continue reading

New tools to study the origin of embryonic stem cells – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

March 23, 2017 Immunofluorescence microscopy reveals the different protein profiles of immature stem cells (coloured pink) and mature stem cells (coloured green). Credit: Sarita Panula Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have identified cell surface markers specific for the very earliest stem cells in the human embryo. These cells are thought to possess great potential for replacing damaged tissue but until now have been difficult to distinguish from classical embryonic stem cells. The study is published in the prestigious journal Cell Stem Cell. During the first week of fertilisation, the embryo grows from a single cell into a blastocyst, a hollow cluster of a few hundred cells. The blastocyst then attaches itself to the wall of the uterus (implantation), and for a limited period from fertilisation to a few days after implantation the embryo contains pluripotent stem cells. These cells can develop into all the body's cell types and are therefore of considerable interest to the field of regenerative and reparative medicine. A few years ago, it was discovered that there are two stages for human pluripotent stem cells, corresponding to the pre-implanted and post-implanted embryonic cells. Although the classical stem cells used in regenerative medicine are isolated from the pre-implanted embryo, … Continue reading

Strong Progress for Paralyzed Patients After Stem Cell Therapy, Company Says – KQED

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

A small stem cell trial in which patients with severe spinal injuriesappeared to make remarkable progress is still showing excellent results, according to the company conductingthe research. One of the patients in the trial is 21-year-old Kris Boesen, from Bakersfield, California, whose story we reported on last year.A car crash had left theBakersfield, California native with three crushed vertebrae, almost no feeling below his neck, and a grimprognosis. Doctors believed he would live the rest of his life as a paraplegic. Enter stem cell therapy. Most treatments for serious spinal injuries concentrate on physical therapy to expand the range of the patients remainingmotor skills and to limit further injury, not to reverse the actual damage. But last April, as part of an experimental phase 2 clinical trial called SCiStar, researchers injected Boesen with 10 million stem cells. By July, hehad recovered use of his hands to the point where he could use a wheelchair, a computer and a cellphone, and could take care of most of his daily living needs. In recent months his progress has continued, says his father. Boesen is not the only patient to have improved in the trial, according toAsterias Biotherapeutics, which is conducting the research. Boesen … Continue reading
