Brain injuries cause lasting issues – Pamplin Media Group

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2017

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. A fundraiser is planned for Sunday at Twiggs Martini Bar in Bridgeport Brain injuries are complicated. There are no simple measures of treatment, and the injuries can create lasting challenges for people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families. March is Brain Injury Awareness month and Faith and Had Walmer of Lake Oswego want to share information about brain injuries with the community. "Brain injuries are some of the least understood," Faith said. "It's an 'invisible disability.'" Had Walmer has a brain injury, the result of an auto accident he experienced in 1977. "I was in college and wasn't wearing a seat belt," he said. "I was in a coma for a week." His brain trauma continues, and he and Faith have developed support groups to deal with living with a brain injury. Had says meditation helps a great deal; he even teaches meditation to others with brain injuries. "It helps me find a place and peace where I can come from and return to," he said. The couple wants to make others aware of how easy brain injuries can occur, and how many go undetected. "Lots of people have brain injuries and … Continue reading

Lungs make platelets, store blood stem cells: Study – The San Diego Union-Tribune

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2017

Challenging a long-held model about how blood is formed, a study led by UC San Francisco researchers has found that the lungs play a crucial role in the process, producing half of blood platelets and also storing blood-forming stem cells. The study, performed in mice, also found that blood stem cells and progenitor cells travel freely between the lungs and bone marrow, long considered the primary source of blood production. If found to occur in humans, this discovery about the lungs role in blood production could provide new approaches for treating blood diseases, pulmonologist Mark R. Looney, M.D., senior author of the study, said in a statement. Moreover, the success of lung transplantation might be increased by better understanding this process. Immune reaction between donor blood cells in the lungs and the host could contribute to transplant rejection, the study stated. The study was published Wednesday in the journal Nature. When placed online, the study can be found at j.mp/lungblood. "This finding definitely suggests a more sophisticated view of the lungs -- that they're not just for respiration but also a key partner in formation of crucial aspects of the blood," Looney said. "What we've observed here in mice strongly … Continue reading

Therapeutic riding improves motor control and self-confidence in … – Horsetalk

Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2017

Therapeutic horse-riding improved the confidence of children with cerebral palsy, providing them with hope and the feeling that they can cope with their lives, according to their parents. These benefits were on top of improvements in balance, trunk and posture control identified in the study carried out in Greece. Researchers Athanasia Laiou, Anna Christakou and Vaios Kaminiotis set out to assess the impact of therapeutic horse-riding, known as hippotherapy, on children with cerebral palsy from the parents perspective. Hippotherapy in the Greek model refers to the incorporation of equine movement by physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists as a physical treatment strategy. Interviews were undertaken with 10 parents. Their children were aged 4 to 18 and had received hippotherapy from a qualified hippotherapy clinical specialist weekly for at least the previous three months. Laiou and her colleagues, writing in the International Journal of Physiotherapy, said their results provided evidence that hippotherapy was a promising avenue, having physical and psychological benefits for children with cerebral palsy. Hippotherapy improved childrens daily activities, their independence and, in general, a better quality of life has been attained, while no negative impacts have been identified, they reported. The study team looked at other research in … Continue reading

Please enable Javascript to watch this video A brain injury can impact all aspects of a persons life including mobility, thinking skills, life skills, personality, eating and talking, and can affect a person of any age, race, gender, and socioeconomic status. When it comes to brain injuries, the sooner you begin rehabilitation, the better the outcome may be. Cone Health has several different venues of rehabilitation to help patients at different stages of recovery. The rehab process starts in the acute phase of injury and can continue to intensive inpatient rehab, skilled nursing facilities and outpatient locations. Sometimes, a brain injury can be overlooked when there are multiple other injuries, but without treatment, they can have just as long-lasting and disabling effects on your life. If you are concerned that you may have experienced a brain injury, its important to follow up with your physician. Symptoms of a brain injury can include headache, dizziness, changes in behavior or sleep. If you are experiencing any of these things, its important to discuss your symptoms with your provider. Brain Injury Awareness Day – KSNT News

Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2017

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) Members from the Brain Injury Association of Kansas are making their way to the Statehouse to get lawmakers to understand the seriousness of traumatic brain injuries in Kansas. Millions live with a traumatic brain injury which costs Americans more than $70 billion for treatment and care. The goal of the gathering at the Capitol is to get lawmakers to support a Senate bill which would make places that have state Medicaid services to provide assistance at homes and in the community. They happen when youre outside walking your dog and you trip on the sidewalk. Its a sort of an injury that can actually happen unfortunately to any person and at any time. Biogen wins patent ruling for its $4 billion MS treatment – The Boston Globe

Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2017

Biogen Inc.s Tecfidera pill, which treats multiple sclerosis, generates about $4 billion a year for the Cambridge biotech. Shares of Biogen Inc. were trading up 1.5 percent early Tuesday afternoon after the Cambridge biotechs patent on its top-selling multiple sclerosis treatment was upheld by a legal ruling. The U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board rejected a patent challenge by Texas hedge fund manager Kyle Bass, who has been working for years to invalidate key intellectual property rights of Biogen and other biotechnology companies. A ruling in favor of the Bass-led Coalition for Affordable Drugs could have hurt Biogens revenue from the oral MS drug Tecfidera, which generated nearly $4 billion in sales last year. Biogen settled part of a separate ongoing patent dispute with Denmarks Forward Pharma A/S in January, agreeing to pay $1.2 billion to license Forward Pharmas intellectual property covering an active ingredient in Tecfidera. Investors are awaiting a pending decision in a separate part of that case, in which Forward Pharma is seeking annual royalties from Biogen on the sale of Tecfidera. Beware the hype on stem-cell breakthroughs – The Globe and Mail

Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2017

Health science gets a lot of attention in the popular press. People love hearing about breakthroughs, paradigm shifts and emerging cures. The problem is, these stories are almost always misleading. While optimistic miscalculations of the state of biomedical research may seem as if it were a harmless distraction, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests it can be the source of real social harm. It can drive unrealistic expectations, affect the public utilization of health-care resources and even shape a less-than-ideal research agenda. It can also help to legitimize the marketing of unproven therapies. This week, the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reported on three individuals who went blind after receiving an unproven stem cell treatment at a Florida clinic. The patients paid thousands of dollars for what they thought was a clinical trial on the use of stem cells to treat macular degeneration. The primary fault, both legally and morally, for the marketing and use of unproven stem-cell therapies lies with the providers who are involved with the practice. We need national regulators (e.g., Health Canada, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and the bodies that oversee the relevant health-care professionals (e.g., the colleges that regulate … Continue reading
