Sarah Drew Asked *Grey's Anatomy* to Include a Breast Pump … – Glamour

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2017

Last week's episode of Grey's Anatomy was a major one for April and Jackson (the proof is in all those Twitter reaction gifs). Fans finally got their wish for a hot and heavy romantic moment between the pair when the two passionately hooked up on a work trip in snowy Montana. (Thank you, Catherine Avery, for so brilliantly setting that up!) "That episode ended with a tremendous amount of hope," Sarah Drew (who plays April) explained during the cast's recent panel at Paleyfest. "Whether that translates into romance or just a solidification that they are each others person and theyll always be best friends, that has yet to be seen. Well see what happens. Although social media was abuzz that the couple might finally get back together, there was a subtle, more significant moment in the episode that viewers might have skipped over. About 10 minutes into the episode, Jackson is on the phone with April, where she's sitting on the bed in her Montana hotel room. She's got her laptop in front of her, but it's not her main focus. Instead, she's tightening a bottle having just breast pumped milk for her baby, Harriet, who was back in Seattle … Continue reading

The anatomy of a tornadic storm – KOCO Oklahoma City

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2017

OKLAHOMA CITY With storm season right around the corner, it will be common to hear KOCO meteorologists and storm chasers use severe storm terms. Commonly used terms may be "wall cloud" or "mesocyclone.: Here is a breakdown of what these terms mean. Supercell: An often dangerous thunderstorms that consists primarily of a single, rotating updraft, which persists for much longer than 1020 minutes. Mesocylone: A cyclonically rotating vortex, around 1-6 miles in diameter, in a thunderstorm Wall cloud: A local, often abrupt lowering from a cumulonimbus cloud base into a low-hanging accessory cloud. A wall cloud marks the lower portion of a very strong updraft, usually associated with a supercell or severe multicell storm. It typically develops near the precipitation region of the cumulonimbus. Wall clouds that exhibit significant rotation and vertical motions often precede tornado formation by a few minutes to an hour. Updraft: The part of the supercell storm that has rising vertical motion moving towards the top of the storm. The downdraft is the part of the storm that falls vertically, which typically contains rain, hail and sometimes damaging winds. Asterias Bio’s cell therapy continues to demonstrate treatment effect in spinal cord injury patients; shares ahead 12% – Seeking Alpha

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2017

Thinly traded micro cap Asterias Biotherapeutics (AST +12.4%) perks up on light volume in response to its update on its ongoing SciStar Phase 1/2a clinical trial assessing the 10M-cell dose of AST-OPC1 (oligodendrocyte progenitor cells) in patients with sub-acute C-5 to C-7 cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). Data on the sixth and final patient in the AIS-A (complete injury, no motor function below the injury site) 10M cell cohort showed upper extremity motor function improvement at month 3 and further improvement in month 6. The results were consistent with the five previous patients. Upper extremity motor function is the most desirable functional improvement in the quadriplegic population. CEO Steve Cartt says, "These results are quite encouraging, and suggest that there are meaningful improvements in the recovery of functional ability in patients treated with the 10 million cell dose of AST-OPC1 versus spontaneous recovery rates observed in a closely matched untreated patient population. We look forward to reporting additional efficacy and safety data for this cohort, as well as for the currently-enrolling AIS-A 20 million cell and AIS-B 10 million cell cohorts, later this year." InVivo Therapeutics Announces Submission to the FDA of Its … – Business Wire (press release)

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2017

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp. (NVIV)today announced that it has submitted its first module containing nonclinical studies to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as part of its Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) modular submission and review process for the Neuro-Spinal Scaffold. InVivos modular HDE process is based on a submission of three modules to the FDA that constitute a complete HDE submission once all have been submitted: a nonclinical studies module, a manufacturing module, and a clinical data module. This process allows the FDA to review each module separately and provide timely feedback, typically within 90 days of submission, thereby allowing the applicant the opportunity to resolve any deficiencies earlier in the review process compared to a traditional HDE application. The submission of our nonclinical studies module marks the accomplishment of another major milestone for the INSPIRE Study, Mark Perrin, InVivos Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, said. We expect to receive acceptance of the nonclinical module in the third quarter of this year, and plan to submit the manufacturing module in the second half of 2017 and the clinical module in 2018, all as part of our strategy to pursue accelerated approval for the Neuro-Spinal Scaffold. A Texas Criminal Court of Appeals decision stunned brain injury advocates when it ruled last week that a State of Texas dedicated fund, which provides medically-necessary services to Texans with brain and spinal cord injuries, is unconstitutional. The result is a catastrophic loss of funding required to continue a brain injury treatment program. Austin, Texas (PRWEB) March 21, 2017 A Texas Criminal Court of Appeals decision stunned brain injury advocates when it ruled last week that a State of Texas dedicated fund, which provides medically-necessary services to Texans with brain and spinal cord injuries, is unconstitutional. The Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services (CRS) program is administered by the Health & Human Services Commission, and benefits all Texans impacted by brain injury including crime victims and veterans. The Court agreed with the appellant, Orlando Salinas, finding the dedicated fund directing revenue to the CRS program from misdemeanor and felony court costs to be an unlawful tax, and therefore unconstitutional. In a ruling on Wednesday, March 8, the Court ordered districts to stop collections for CRS and one other that offers counseling to abused children within 40 days. This loss of funding is an immediate threat to the CRS program and may result in … Continue reading

Newly released figures show a 28 per cent hike in the number of kids with disorders such as cerebral palsy who are waiting more than 12 months for rehab care. The anxious families of no fewer than 4,641 children spent the whole of last year queuing for a first assessment with an occupational therapist. Worryingly, 455 of these were aged under five. The January stats represent a significant jump from last April, when 3,611 kids including 291 toddlers had been on a waiting list for over a year. And the situation is even worse for pensioners, with those forced to endure long delays for occupational therapy soaring by 68 per cent in just six months, up from 615 to 1,038. As of the start of 2016, there were 5,916 people with disabilities in Ireland who had gone a year or longer without any hope of an independent life 35 per cent more than this time last year. … Continue reading

Deadly spider venom could stop stroke brain damage, doctors say – The Independent

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2017

Venom from the deadliest spider in Australia could hold the key to creating the world'sfirsttreatment for brain damage caused by astroke. A protein found in the toxic venom of the funnel web spider was found to help preventdamage to brain cells after stroke in lab rats, said scientists. Researchers from the University of Queensland and Monash University captured three funnel web spiders, whose bite can kill humans in 15 minutes, for a study. They used pipettes to 'milk' the spiders for their venom which theyanalysed, spotting a protein called Hi1a as it resembled two copies of another chemical that can protect brain cells. The scientists recreated the protein and injected it into rats. They found it blocked ion channels in the brain which are sensitive to acid and play an important role in brain damage after strokes. In the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they described Hi1a as "highly neuroprotective" inmodels of what happens when someone suffers a stroke caused by a blood clot.
