Posted: Published on March 20th, 2017

Out of breath and on their last legs, St. Johns seniors Asia McCray and Aisha Sheppard turned to each other and thought about quitting before reminding themselves why they were running hills in the scorching summer heat. Cutting-edge stem cell therapy proves safe, but will it ever be effective? – Science Magazine

Masayo Takahashi (second from left) treated macular degeneration with retinal tissue grown from iPS cells. Kyodo News/Contributor/getty images By Dennis NormileMar. 15, 2017 , 5:00 PM Its official: The first use of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells in a human has proved safe, if not clearly effective. Japanese researchers reported in this weeks issue of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) that using the cells to replace eye tissue damaged by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) did not improve a patients vision, but did halt disease progression. They had described the outcome at conferences, but publication of the details is an encouraging milestone for other groups gearing up to treat diseased or damaged organs with the versatile replacement cells, which are derived from mature tissues. This initial success is pretty momentous, says Alan Trounson, a stem cell scientist at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, Australia. But the broader picture for iPS therapies is mixed, as researchers have retreated from their initial hopes of creating custommade stem cells from each patients tissue. That strategy might have ensured that recipients immune systems would accept the new cells. But it proved too slow and expensive, says Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto … Continue reading

After 3 Women Are Blinded, This Controversial Procedure Is Back in the Spotlight – NewBeauty Magazine (blog)

Posted: Published on March 20th, 2017

A new report published by the New England Journal of Medicine details that three women have become permanently blinded after undergoing stem cell injections into their eyes at a Florida clinic. The three subjects were suffering from macular degeneration, an age-related eye disease that leads to vision impairment, and were under the impression that they were participating in a clinical trial for treatment of the disorder. In reality, these women had undergone the procedure at an unregulated Florida clinic called US Stem Cell, where staffers extracted stem cells from the womens belly fat via liposuction and then injected them into the eyes. Stem cell treatments, although buzzy (youve heard about them in the context of being able to treat a myriad of disorders and even incorporated into skin care products) are largely unregulated, making it difficult for consumers to differentiate between solid medical research versus marketing hype. While there is plenty of legitimate research being done in the spacesome very promisingtherapy centers that lack safety standards or sufficient medical knowledge are commonplace. A simple fix to avoid unnecessary coronary stents is overlooked by … – Science Daily

Posted: Published on March 20th, 2017

Physician researchers at Thomas Jefferson University suspect that some cases of coronary artery spasm go unrecognized and are incorrectly treated with stents. The good news -- there could be a simple fix to eliminate these unnecessary stenting procedures. The team published a case series in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions describing six patients who were scheduled for angioplasty and stenting for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (five of whom had a cardiac catheterization days prior). However, when the cardiologists gave nitroglycerin prior to placing the stent, the blockages resolved, indicating the true diagnosis of coronary artery spasm. Angioplasty was deferred and all patients were successfully treated with medication. "Our suspicion is that some patients receive stents unnecessarily since they are misdiagnosed as having fixed atherosclerotic blockage while the true culprit, coronary spasm, goes unrecognized," said senior author Michael Savage, M.D., Director of the Jefferson Angioplasty Center and the Ralph J. Roberts Professor of Cardiology in the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. "Cardiologists need to know that they could be overlooking coronary spasm and thus, over treating their patients with stents." Cardiovascular guidelines on cardiac catheterization and coronary intervention with stents go to great lengths emphasizing the importance … Continue reading
