Hormone Replacement Therapy – Challenging Long-Held Beliefs – Anti Aging News

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2017

A stunning early termination of a study in 2002 on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which erroneously indicated that HRT caused heart attacks and breast cancer, led both doctors and their patients to abandon the treatment worldwide. The real cause of the trial termination was for other reasons not related to any serious side effects or harm from HRT. However, the damage was done and women today still tend to believe HRT is an unsafe treatment. In a new study to be published in the journal Climacteric, concerns about HRT are discussed and the long-held beliefs are challenged. Described as distorted reporting by one professor, the after effects of the 2002 report has been described as a cascade of fear as women began to disavow hormone replacement therapy. As the facts trickled out, it was discovered that reputable scientists involved in that study were not mentioned in the report. Moreover, some of the claims in the report were unsubstantiated and conflicted with the scientific data and thus the study protocol had been deserted. Preventing Hip Fractures, Heart Disease & Cancer The aim of the 2002 study was to test the benefits of HRT on both women near menopause and those already … Continue reading

Three blinded after dubious stem cell treatment injected into their eyeballs – Ars Technica

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2017

Ars has reported before about the predatory ways of direct-to-consumer clinics touting unproven and sometimes dangerous stem cell therapies. As these clinics bubble up around the country, their slimy ads targeting desperate patient populations may seem pretty low. But a stem cell company in Florida may have them beat in the despicable category: it posed as a legitimate research clinic conducting a trial listed on the government registry, clinicaltrials.gov. In a report published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, doctors and researchers report in detail the medical aftermath forthe three patients, who were all seeking treatment for age-related macular degeneration. This is a common disease that diminishes eyesight slowly over time and does not, by itself, lead to blindness. Two of the patients have already sued the company behind the clinic, US Stem Cell (previously known as Bioheart, Inc.). The suit was settled, and the patients signed nondisclosure agreements. The clinical trial, which the three women were never actually enrolled in, never took place and has been withdrawn. The trial was said to have been approved by an institutional review board, a necessary step for trials. But there were no details about the approval or the board. US … Continue reading

Biology: EPA chief blows hot air in contradicting climate science – The Columbus Dispatch

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2017

President Richard Nixon established the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970. In 1971, he strengthened the Clean Air Act and extended the Clean Water Act, andhe banned the pesticide DDT the next year. Nixon was a shrewd politician. He understood that hisRepublican Party had to embrace the environmental movement that was popular at the time. Americans still support environmentalism and are even more dependent onenvironmental services than we were 50 years ago. Just ask residents of Toledo, Ohio, orFlint, Michigan, about their drinking water. But Republican politicians have rejected Nixons insight that they should be on the right sideof Americans' relationship with the environment. A prime example of this about-face recently came when the new EPA director, Scott Pruitt, appeared on CNBC. Pruitt said: I think that measuring withprecision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do, and therestremendous disagreement about the degree of impact, so, no, I would not agree that(human activity is) a primary contributor to the global warming that we see." In environmental biology, measuring anything with precision is a challenge. We pursue our science because it has so many moving parts. We cant measure precisely many influences that we nonethelessknow shape the biological systems … Continue reading

Anatomy of a crisis – The Times of Israel

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2017

Barely two years after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus government was formed, all the papers can talk about on Sunday morning is its apparently imminent demise. A coalition crisis is in full swing, sending Israels preeminent pundits scrambling to find people to blame and issues to make the center of the agenda. With all the attention going to the possibility of fresh elections, relatively little attention is given to the Israeli airstrike on Syria early Friday morning and the rocket fire rupturing southern Israels weekend calm. To virtually nobodys surprise, the free daily Israel Hayom is sympathetic to Netanyahu, explaining his position on its front page that the existing public broadcaster would cost less than the proposed new one set to be rolled out. What do we need it for? Netanyahu is quoted in the papers headline, setting the tone of the rest of the article. It quotes senior Likud official Yariv Levin saying that with 30 seats, the ruling party can stick to its guns despite pressure from its coalition allies. The paper exhibits the most balanced manner of reporting by quoting Likud ministers throughout the first five paragraphs of its main report, only getting around to the Kulanu partys … Continue reading

The UKs Wellcome trust has selected 22 pictures and images that capture the wonders of the life sciences. Theyre now on exhibition in the UK and Ireland. The Wellcome Image Awardscelebrates this year 20 years of bringing us the best biology images around the world. Theawards are destined to visual masterpieces that communicate key aspects of the world of biomedical science and healthcare. One of the most successful images has been a close-up of an intraocular lens iris clip, taken in Cambridge by Mark Bartley. This small lens is fixed to the iris with a tiny surgical incision, 3mm long, and is used to treat myopia and cataracts. The patient of whom the picture was taken from, regained almost full vision thanks to the clip. Going down to the microscopic level, another of the winning images depicts a synthetic polymer created at MIT with the aim ofenabling the delivery of microRNA therapeutics to cancer cells. Taken using fluorescence microscopyby Joo Conde, Nuria Oliva and Natalie Artzi, the picture directs our attention to the huge breakthroughs in medicine that biotechnology is bringing. But the overall winner this year is Stickman, an image depicting an alter ego from the artist, Spooky Pooka, … Continue reading
