Ex-Excela Health cardiologist testifies in malpractice suit – Tribune-Review

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2017

The cardiologist accused of performing unnecessary procedures at Excela Health told a Westmoreland County jury on Wednesday he did nothing wrong and didn't even know about the allegations until just before he resigned in early 2011. Dr. Ehab Morcos testified in his own defense during the eighth day of trial for a malpractice lawsuit filed against him, his former cardiology practice and Excela by a North Huntingdon truck driver who claims he received unneeded stents from Morcos during multiple procedures in late 2008. All are appropriate, all were done for a reason, Morcos testified. Steven Sensenich, 57, contends he received seven stents, mesh tubes implanted in cardiac arteries to improve blood flow, and that five of those devices were not needed. His lawsuit is the first trial of 71 cases pending against Morcos, Westmoreland Cardiology (where he worked as a doctor) and Excela Health (where the procedures were conducted). Sensenich has maintained that Excela allowed Morcos and another doctor at his practice to routinely implant unneeded stents. Morcos vehemently denied those allegations from the witness stand Wednesday while showing jurors videos of the three procedures he performed on Sensenich. Morcos said each stent was implanted to correct arterial blockages that … Continue reading

Beebe cardiology offers fully dissolving heart stent – CapeGazette.com

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2017

The interventional cardiology team at Beebe Healthcare recently became the first on the Delmarva Peninsula to offer patients with coronary artery disease a new treatment option that literally disappears over time. Dr. Ehtasham Qureshi, a board-certified interventional cardiologist, recently performed the first implants at Beebe. The Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold is the world's first FDA-approved dissolving stent, signaling a major advance in the treatment of coronary artery disease, which affects 15 million people in the United States and remains a leading cause of death worldwide despite decades of therapeutic advances. While stents are traditionally made of metal, Abbott's Absorb stent is made of a naturally dissolving material, similar to dissolving sutures. Absorb starts to dissolve after implantation in a blocked artery and disappears completely in about three years, after it has done its job of keeping a clogged artery open and promoting healing of the treated artery segment. By contrast, metal stents are permanent implants. "The Absorb bioresorbable scaffold represents a breakthrough in the way we treat blocked arteries," said Qureshi, who completed the procedure via a novel wrist approach. "Patients now have the advantage of stent placement to promote healing, and, at the same time, there will be no … Continue reading

Career Advice From an Outgoing Advanced Interventional Cardiology Fellow – TCTMD

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2017

Its easy to look back and think of all the should-haves, would-haves, and could-haves that might have changed the trajectory of your career. But we all know this isnt healthy behavior. Glancing forward to the next few monthsthe last in a seemingly endless period of my trainingIve been thinking about how I would absolutely not be where I am today without guidance from numerous different mentors and colleagues along the way. As I move forward, here is the short version of what Id want to pass onto medical students and residents interested in a career in cardiology. 1. Its a marathon, not a sprint Although I was told by many over the course of my training to slow down and focus on bigger-picture outcomes, this necessity only seeps in when you are actually living through your years in residency and fellowship. So stay focused and make sure you have a very strong support system of family and friends to get you through. For me, this is my wife, parents, and brother. It is also crucial to work on your emotional intelligence, as there will be days when you will feel like giving up, and what will keep you on the … Continue reading

Building a Resilient Business Inspired by Biology – Scientific American (blog)

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2017

Many global enterprises today have succeeded by following a simple recipe: procure, manufacture, and assemble in the lowest-cost locations; link these using reliable, standardized logistics and information technology; market the resulting products globally; and book profit in low-tax havens. This powerful formula for economic arbitrage enabled by technology and supported by the politics of open borders is the fruit of several decades of globalization. Today, all three elements of the equation not only are changing, but also are subject to unprecedented levels of uncertainty. Multidimensional uncertainty has profound implications for the standard operating model of global business. First, the potential for economic arbitrage is decreasing as a result of narrowing labor cost differentials across nations and increasing capital intensity of production, leading to a discernible trend of reshoring production. Direct-cost differentials in manufacturing between the US and the Yangtze River Delta in China, for instance, are now estimated to be only 1%. When indirect costs such as logistics are considered, many goods destined for the US market can now be manufactured more cheaply in the US. Whether this trend will persist or strengthen, however, is impossible to say given other uncertainties. Second, technology promises to reshape further the conventional wisdom … Continue reading
