Maintaining a Science Library Case Study: Why Are There No Male Calico Cats? Investigation: Habitat Selection in Flour Beetles Inquiry in Genetics Using Wisconsin Fast Plants Meiosis Case: SRY not SRY Zoobiquity Review and Discussion Questions My classroom has a collection of science themed books that are not textbooks that I periodically share with my students. For example, when discussing biochemistry at the beginning This presentation case study asks two important questions regarding cat coloration: Why are there no male calico cats? Why is it that clones of calico cats do not look This activity was modified from an Advanced Placement Investigation for use with freshman classes. The instructions are clear and require students to examine data and create a graph. Genetic Experiments can be intimidating for teachers due to the time and cost of breeding plants or animals in a classroom. These issues are further complicated in a public Are your students fascinated by the idea of hermaphrodites? Every year when I talk about worms and other organisms that have both sperm and eggs, I get tons I try to read at least one non-fiction book per year to try to keep myself up to date and inspired with … Continue reading

Pain in the Neck – Newswise – Newswise (press release)

Posted: Published on March 14th, 2017

Newswise For millions of sufferers, there is nothing more debilitating than chronic back or joint pain. It can feel like a lifetime of misery. But researchers led by University of Utah bioengineering assistant professor Robby Bowles have discovered a way to curb chronic pain by modulating genes that reduce tissue- and cell-damaging inflammation. This has applications for many inflammatory-driven diseases, Bowles says. It could be applied for arthritis or to therapeutic cells that are being delivered to inflammatory environments that need to be protected from inflammation. The teams discovery was published in a new paper this month, CRISPR-Based Epigenome Editing of Cytokine Receptors for the Promotion of Cell Survival and Tissue Deposition in Inflammatory Environments, in a special issue of Tissue Engineering. University of Utah bioengineering doctoral student, Niloofar Farhang, co-authored the study, which is a collaborative project between the University of Utah, Duke University and Washington University in St. Louis. In chronic back pain, for example, slipped or herniated discs are a result of damaged tissue when inflammation causes cells to create molecules that break down tissue. Typically, inflammation is natures way of alerting the immune system to repair tissue or tackle infection. But chronic inflammation can instead lead … Continue reading

UW Center for Dialysis Innovation gets $15M grant to improve … – GeekWire

Posted: Published on March 14th, 2017

Jonathan Himmelfarb, co-director of the UWs Center for Dialysis Innovation and also director of the UWs Kidney Research Institute. (UW Photo) Dialysis can be a life-saving treatment forthe millions of people across the globe who face kidney failure. But despite the importance of this treatment, the technology behind it is still essentially the same as when the process was pioneered at the University of Washington in Seattle in the early 60s. Now, a new UW center is hoping to revolutionize the technology again. The Center for Dialysis Innovation brings together researchers from around the university with the goal of greatly improving dialysis technology, and it just received a $15 million grant from nonprofit dialysis providerNorthwest Kidney Centers to pursue that goal. Northwest Kidney Centers says the grant will support startup projects within the Center for Dialysis Innovation, with the goal of one day developing dialysis technology that can completely restore kidney health. Dialysis is currently the only treatment for kidney failure, short of a kidney transplant. Today, over 450,000 people in the U.S. are on dialysis, and the life expectancy for those patients is only 3 to 5 years. We are excited about the Center for Dialysis Innovation because it … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy – BuddyTV (blog)

Nathan Riggs had us all swooning when he finally asked Meredith out on an official date on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. Of course in true Mer form, she told him she needed to think about it before she gave him an actual answer. She probably knows that once she goes down that route, that will take whatever it is they're doing to a completely new level. But I'm all for it! I figured she needed my help to figure out if Nathan is really right for her. So I wanted to give her a few reasons to consider why she should give him a real chance. It's Beyond Time I think we can all agree that it's time. It's been a couple of seasons since Shonda Rhimes made me and millions of others livid with Derek's tragic and shocking death. Meredith went through her dark phase, as any woman would. And Derek's passing is almost like a faint memory as the show has clearly moved on without him. Now, it's time for Meredith to be in a serious relationship. She definitely deserves to be happy after everything she has gone through. Anatomy of an Historic Northeast Blizzard – Warming Trend Here – 60F by Sunday? – Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: Published on March 14th, 2017

Potentially Historic Blizzard Shuts Down Northeast Meteorologists are prone to pangs of jealousy. You see, we all want the most interesting, peculiar weather to show up over our respective cities. It gives us something to babble about - it makes us feel important. So you can only imagine how much I'd like to be in New York City or Boston today. A late-season blizzard will drop snow at a rate of 2-3 inches/hour with thunder and lightning; winds topping 50 mph creating hour after hour of white-out conditions. The northeast will effectively shut down for the next 48 hours. According to FiveThirtyEight New York has seen only 5 snowstorms of a foot or more in March or April since 1870. California just had the wettest winter in 122 years; now a super-sized blizzard for New England? There's more water in the air - more fuel for blizzards and floods. We've had our (3-inch) drama here at home. Take a mental snapshot of the snow in your yard - it'll be gone within 2 days. 40s return Thursday with 50s early next week. Models suggest a mild, Pacific breeze into late March. Spring won't come as early as 2012, but 2-3 … Continue reading

Switzerland researchers advance smart neuroprosthetics for … – Becker’s Orthopedic & Spine

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2017

Switzerland-based Ecole polytechnique fdrale de Lausanne researchers are studying intelligent neuroprosthetics with the potential to help those with neurological dysfunction. Here are six observations: 1. Dr. Grgoire Courtine demonstrated paralyzed primates could walk with the help of a smart neuroprosthetic system, "brain-spine interface." The interface decodes brain signals and stimulates the spinal cord to contract leg muscles for a walking motion. 2. Also, Dr. Courtine found paralyzed rats could recover from spinal cord injuries with a few weeks of rehabilitation, leveraging electro-chemical stimulation and physiotherapy with a robotic harness. 3. Clinical trials are testing the spine aspect of the brain-spine interface on people with partial paralysis in clinical trials. 4. As opposed to working toward spinal cord neural regrowth, Dr. Courtine studies the plasticity of the nervous system. 5. The neuroprosthetic protocols feature implantable electrodes equipped with the ability to read neural activity, stimulate nerves and bypass nerve injury for biological function restoration. 6. These electrodes, however, often lead to inflammation and tissue aggravation when implanted. To fix this problem, Dr. Stphanie Lacour designed e-Dura implants, flexible electrodes that conform to the body with the intention of lessening inflammation. Mark Perrin, InVivos CEO and Chairman, said, 2016 was a year marked by meaningful and significant progress. In 2016, we: We ended the year with approximately $33 million in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities that we project will fund us into the second quarter of 2018, by which time we expect to be able to submit the HDE application for marketing approval of the Neuro-Spinal Scaffold. Over the coming quarters, we will continue to make progress toward this goal by enrolling more patients, increasing sites, expanding into the U.K., and completing enrollment of the INSPIRE study, which we are now projecting will occur in the third quarter of 2017. In addition to the progress with INSPIRE, we also plan to initiate our first study in cervical SCI in Canada in the coming months. Cervical SCI represents a higher risk, higher reward indication in which the effects of neural preservation, regeneration or remyelination may be more dramatically demonstrated. I am excited at the prospect of building upon last years advances and continuing our journey to redefine the lives of patients with spinal … Continue reading
