What is an Acquired Brain Injury? – SBS

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2017

The recovery process from an ABI differs significantly between patients due to individual circumstances. After patients leave the acute sector of a hospital they often spend a period of time in a rehabilitation ward or an ABI specialist rehab unit. When they are discharged to the community patients are designated case workers to assist with the rehabilitation process. Professor Perminder Sachdev says while the brain has a capacity to regenerate after an ABI, he says few patients return to their full abilities after an ABI. He also says there needs to better rehabilitation facilities available and different types of facilities including more physical rehabilitation options. We have to make our rehabilitation programs more comprehensive and look at other aspects of rehabilitation as well, Perminder says. Lisa Bryants daughter Ricky has a seizure when in 2015 at 23 years old and went from being very independent to requiring her mothers full time care. Lisa is no longer able to go to work, but along with the financial struggle, she says there has been an emotional toll of caring for her daughter who is now unable to perform basic function. You take what happens, you care for the child that you have, … Continue reading

The evidence base for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): what can we believe? – HealthCanal.com (press release) (blog)

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2017

The facts that most women and clinicians consider in making the decision to use, or not use, HRT are frequently wrong or incorrectly applied says Professor Robert D Langer in a paper entitled The evidence base for HRT: what can we believe?, which will be published in the forthcoming April edition of the journal of the International Menopause Society, Climacteric. It raises serious questions about the facts that have led women and their doctors to believe hormone therapy (often called HRT) is unsafe. The incendiary reports surrounding the early termination of the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) clinical trial of a specific form of HRT (conjugated equine estrogens with medroxyprogesterone acetate), in 2002, were highly misleading. They indicated that the study was stopped because HRT caused breast cancer and heart attacks, when in reality the study was stopped for more subtle reasons and there was no statistically significant harm for either breast cancer or heart attacks. Nonetheless, that stunning report quickly resulted in women across the world abandoning HRT. Professor Langer, one of the principal investigators in the WHI, describes in his paper the process which led to the distorted reporting of the WHI findings that triggered the sensationalised cascade of … Continue reading

Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Curb Atherosclerosis? New Imaging Study Opens Old Questions – TCTMD

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2017

A provocative new study looking at postmenopausal women who underwent coronary artery calcium (CAC) scanning indicates that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use is associated not only with lower CAC scores but also lower all-cause mortality over a mean follow-up of 8 years. The study, say investigators, should reopen the question of whether hormone replacement, according to contemporary guidance, may be useful in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. This is not a closed issue, senior author Daniel Berman, MD (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA), told TCTMD, noting that baseline amounts or changes in atherosclerosis may be useful in determining a role for HRT. Further studies should be performed, he said. The study by Berman and colleagues will be presented by first author Yoav Arnson, MD (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center), at the upcoming American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2017 Scientific Sessions and was released early to the media this week. HRT: A Rocky Road The theory that hormone replacement in postmenopausal women could help prevent cardiovascular disease first evolved out of observational studies in the 1980s and 1990s, leading to widespread use of HRT and the launch of the massive Womens Health Initiative (WHI) study in 1991. HRTs popularity plummeted, however, … Continue reading

Women on hormone replacement therapy are living longer as menopause treatment cuts death risk by 30% – The Sun

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2017

A study has found thatHRT helps stop arteries becoming clogged with plaque which can trigger fatal heart attacks and strokes WOMEN on hormone replacement therapy tend to live longer, a study says. Taking the menopause relief treatment has survival benefits and cuts the overall risk of death by 30 per cent, experts claim. Canopy One reason is that HRT helps stop arteries becoming clogged with plaque which can trigger fatal heart attacks and strokes, the scientists found. The aim of HRT is to replace oestrogen and progesterone the body stops producing at menopause. Some experts believe oestrogen helps the heart by cutting cholesterol and aiding blood flow by making vessels more flexible. But controversially, other research links it to cancer and deep vein thrombosis. In the most recent study on plaque build-up, researchers analysed the health records of more than 4,200 women. Each had been given a CT scan to measure atherosclerosis the amount of calcium in the hearts arteries. Alamy Higher levels indicate a build-up of plaque which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Overall, women on HRT were 20 per cent more likely to have a coronary calcium score of zero. They were 36 per cent … Continue reading

NHS bosses to see Mirror boy Ben Baddeley walk after reader-funded treatment the department refused him – Mirror.co.uk

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2017

Health chiefs are to see for themselves the remarkable progress of Mirror boy Ben Baddeley after the treatment that the NHS refused him. The family of cerebral palsy sufferer Ben, 12, has produced a home video showing him walking down steps and in snow. And NHS bosses have agreed to meet the Baddeleys at their home tomorrow. This comes three years after Mirror readers helped to raise 20,000 to privately fund a selective dorsal rhizotomy operation that was cancelled due to Tory cuts in February 2014. Family, friends, supporters and strangers gave another 25,000 for follow up physiotherapy. Mum Amy said of the visit: It will be hard for them to sit in this house and not feel what were going through. Im amazed how fast his body has grown. "This little man is working hard. The film shows Ben being held by Amy after his 2014 op, contrasted with him playing unaided with brother Josh, eight, recently. Amy and dad Gary, of Silverdale, Staffs, want the NHS to pay for Bens continuing 1,400-a-month physiotherapy. North Staffs Clinical Commissioning Group delayed a decision to allow director Cheryl Hardisty to meet the Baddeleys face to face. You can Ben's Facebook page … Continue reading

Brain injuries aren’t obvious, but they affect 13.5 million Americans – Bangor Daily News

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2017

Growing up, I loved playing soccer and from age 13 on I was a goalkeeper on numerous school and club teams. I ended my soccer career during a midseason game my sophomore year of college, when I caught a knee under my chin during a collision with a player from the other team. I was dazed and my tongue swelled so badly that the student athletic trainer had to crush up ibuprofen so that I could actually swallow it. When I saw the athletic director the next day, I was told I didnt have a concussion because, he saw concussions every day in football, and I was denied treatment. Meanwhile, over 1,100 miles away, my parents were frantic. As former EMTs, they knew that every head injury was potentially fatal. After over a week of nearly continuous sleep and constant headaches, I was finally allowed to seek medical help and was diagnosed with classic post-concussion syndrome. It took me months to recover and I took incompletes in all of my classes that term, finishing the necessary academic work over my winter break. Looking back, we estimate that last concussion was my eighth. I was 19 years old at the time. … Continue reading

Vitamin C can target and kill cancer stem cells, study shows – Medical News Today

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2017

Cancer is currently one of the top killers worldwide, and the number of cancer cases is only expected to rise. Although there are a number of therapies available, most of them are toxic and cause serious side effects. New research examines the impact of the natural vitamin C on cancer cell growth. Cancer is the second leading cause of death and disease worldwide, accounting for almost 9 million deaths in 2015, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The global number of new cases of cancer are expected to grow by around 70 percent in the next 20 years. In the United States, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimate that almost 40 percent of U.S. men and women will have developed cancer at one point during their lives. There are various treatment options available for cancer, but they are not always effective; most of them are toxic, and they tend to have a variety of side effects. In some more aggressive cases, the cancer does not respond to treatment, and it is believed that cancer stem-like cells are the reason why the cancer comes back and metastasizes. New research, published in the journal Oncotarget, examines the effectiveness of three natural … Continue reading
