University of Miami’s Miami project successfully completes SCI clinical trial – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

March 8, 2017 University of Miami's Miami Project to Cure Paralysis surgical team preparing for a Schwann cell transplantation. Credit: University of Miami Miller School of Medicine / Miami Project to Cure Paralysis The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, today announced the publication of its first Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Phase I clinical trial involving human nerve cells used to repair the damaged spinal cord, in the February issue of the Journal of Neurotrauma. The cells, known as Schwann cells, are essential for the repair of nerve damage, and long thought to be able to increase recovery after spinal cord injury. The trial, performed at University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, is the first in a series designed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of transplanting autologous human Schwann cells to treat individuals with spinal cord injuries. The trial enrolled subjects with the least chance of natural recovery in order to firstly establish the safety of the cell transplant procedure; specifically, it targeted people with new SCI, less than 30 days after injury, having sustained a trauma-induced lesion between thoracic levels T3-T11 and who were neurologically … Continue reading

Breakthrough in NHS treatment battle for brave cerebral palsy suffer Ben Baddeley – Mirror.co.uk

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

The family of Mirror boy Ben Baddeley will be visited by NHS chiefs in their own home in a bid win vital funding for his needs. The move follows their protest at a board meeting of leading execs this week. His campaigning parents Amy and Gary lobbied director of North Staffs Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Cheryl Hardisty and accountable officer Marcus Warnes. The board meeting was delayed while they aired their concerns. And Ms Hardisty pledged to respond 'face to face' - and to see his treatment herself. As the Baddeleys are working hard raising funds for treatment denied their son on the NHS, the CCG will visit them at home, while Ben is undergoing his specialist physio. Amy, 32, of Silverdale, Staffs., said: "With Gary doing so much over time, they suggested coming to us. Ben's therapist is coming to do his exercises with him next week, so we can show what this is all about. Devastated parents of cerebral palsy sufferer Ben Baddeley to confront NHS bosses over treatment row "We were with all the NHS bosses talking for about 30 minutes. I feel so much more positive now that we are meeting them. "It went so much … Continue reading

Cognitive testing tool used to assess traumatic brain injuries in Summit County – Summit Daily News

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

Sponsored Content Program encourages student athletes and recreationists to take computerized tests that can guide treatment strategies later on Written by Lauren Glendenning Brought to you by St. Anthony Summit Medical Center There's a powerful tool helping health care providers evaluate and treat traumatic brain injuries in Summit County, but many potential patients who could benefit such as skiers, snowboarders, cyclists and student athletes, among others aren't using it. Anyone between the ages of 5 and 59 can take a 30-minute computerized test, called the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test, or ImPACT. This $15 baseline test measures cognitive functioning in the healthy brain. When compared with a post-concussive test, a physician can better evaluate the injury to the brain and develop an individualized course of treatment for optimum recovery. "When you do have a concussion injury, it can be used as a tool to help you return to play," said Jennifer Kagan RN, St. Anthony's Traumatic Brain Injury program coordinator. The medical center launched the TBI program in 2010 as a response to the growing number of head injuries it was treating, Kagan said. The program, which partners with national brain and spinal cord injury prevention organization Think First, … Continue reading

Six other research avenues in the treatment of MS | CTV News – CTV News

CTVNews.ca Staff Published Wednesday, March 8, 2017 1:00PM EST Last Updated Wednesday, March 8, 2017 1:15PM EST Even 150 years after it was identified, multiple sclerosis remains somewhat of a mystery, with researchers still unclear what triggers it, why there are so many forms of the disease, and what is the best way to treat and prevent it. There are several medications currently available to treat the disease, but most aim only to slow its progression, not halt it, and all are considered only modestly effective. And while there are several drug options for the most common form of MS -- relapsing-remitting MS -- there are no approved treatments for primary progressive MS and only one for secondary progressive MS. But many MS specialists have hope for new treatments still in development. Some are medications already being used to treat other conditions; others are new medications or treatments altogether. Heres a look at some of the developments that MS societies are most excited about: Gene mutation linked to multiple sclerosis Geneticists at the University of British Columbia have found a direct genetic link to multiple sclerosis, something that was long thought not to exist. It was identified in two Canadian … Continue reading

Kansas Stem Cell Center Close To First Clinical Trial – KCUR

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

An adult stem cell center established by the Kansas Legislature in 2013 is almost ready for its first clinical trial. Buddhadeb Dawn, executive director of the Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center, told legislators Tuesday that the trial will focus on treating graft-versus-host disease and will begin after final approvals from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Our goal was to do this (trial) in January, but we got delayed because of different things, Dawn said during a hearing of the House Health and Human Services Committee. So we are now hoping to start it perhaps in summer. Based at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, the stem cell center has analyzed trials done elsewhere and hosted a clinical trial sponsored by a biotech company that uses modified stem cells from bone marrow to treat stroke. But the graft-versus-host disease trial would be the first homegrown one. Download the Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center annual update to legislators. Graft-versus-host disease is a potential complication when a patient receives a transplant of tissue, like an organ or bone marrow, from another person. The disease occurs when transplanted tissue fights the patients natural immune system, potentially damaging the liver, skin … Continue reading

Stem cell reprogramming factor controls change in cellular energy generation – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

March 8, 2017 Credit: University of Tsukuba University of Tsukuba-led researchers explored the function of the reprogramming factor KLF4 in production of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). KLF4 was shown to bind upstream of the Tcl1 target gene, which controls a metabolic change in energy generation during the acquisition of cellular pluripotency. This helps explain how cells turn back the developmental clock from adult to stem cell, and could be harnessed to improve efficiency or limit genetic damage during iPSC generation. A little over 10 years ago, the first reprogramming of adult cells into undifferentiated stem cells was achieved. These induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have the ability to become almost any cell type and can divide indefinitely, so share many features with embryonic stem cells. Such characteristics enable iPSCs to be used in several applications of regenerative medicine, particularly because they can be derived from an individual's own cells so tissue rejection problems are not encountered. They can also be programmed to develop into rare or inaccessible cell types, used to screen novel drugs, and studied to understand the cellular basis of disease or reprogramming. However, while the genetic factors responsible for reprogramming are well known, the mechanisms underlying … Continue reading
