Scottish universities link to develop stem cell therapies – PharmaTimes – PharmaTimes

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

Researchers at the Universities of Dundee and Edinburgh in Scotland are looking to work with the pharmaceutical industry to improve understanding of the biological processes that could form the basis of new therapies to support tissue regeneration or repair. The National Phenotypic Screening Centre (NPSC) at the University of Dundee and the Medical Research Council (MRC) Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) at the University of Edinburgh have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work more closely together on translating novel biological discoveries into new stem cell therapies that could address a wide range of conditions. The UK Regenerative Medicine Platform-funded Engineering and exploiting the stem cell niche Hub, led by the CRM, is dedicated to increase understanding of the biology of stem cell niches and to exploiting this knowledge therapeutically to improve organ regeneration through endogenous repair and cell transplantation. Finding new drugs which can activate endogenous regenerative pathways requires the development of cell-based assays able to reproduce the complex behaviour of the cells and tissues in patients; the NPSC specialises in developing such assays so they can be systematically screened using large libraries of drug-like molecules to uncover agents that can alter cell and tissue behaviour. The alliance between … Continue reading

Cardiologist: Up to 5 stents Excela patient received were not needed – Tribune-Review

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

Updated 2 minutes ago A Connecticut cardiologist testified Wednesday that as many as five stents implanted into a North Huntingdon truck driver in late 2008 were unnecessary and led to complications that nearly cost Steven Sensenich his life. During the third day in a malpractice trial, Dr. John Setaro told jurors that medical evidence did not support the decision by Dr. Ehab Morcos to perform two separate procedures at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital. There was no need for more invasive procedures as there were no (health) indications and no benefits, Setaro said. A Westmoreland County jury is hearing evidence in lawsuit brought by Sensenich against Morcos, Westmoreland County Cardiology, his cardiac practice, and Excela that alleges unnecessary medical procedures. The trial is the first of 71 cases pending against Excela, Morcos and Dr. George Bou Samra that were filed after the hospital issued 192 disclosures to patients who were suspected to have received unnecessary stents from the doctors in 2009 and 2010. Sensenich was not part of that disclosure, but he contends Morcos recommended and performed three procedures to implant unneeded stents, mesh tubes that increase blood flow in cardiac arteries. Setaro reviewed Sensenich's medical records and narrated to jurors … Continue reading

Review of a critical anticoagulation app by the American College of Cardiology – iMedicalApps

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

As the population ages, we continue to see more patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Some are even calling the increase in atrial fibrillation diagnoses an epidemic. Frequently, these patients require chronic oral anticoagulation. For decades, we have use vitamin K antagonists such as warfarin. Due to complex monitoring and dosage adjustments, drug interactions and potential side effects such as hemorrhagic stroke and gastrointestinal bleeding, patients and providers have always hoped an alternative to warfarin would come along. Over the last few years, a multitude of target specific oral anticoagulants (TSOACs) for treatment of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation have been approved. These new medications range from direct thrombin inhibitors to Factor Xa inhibitors. TSOACs are not without their drawbacks (bleeding, lack of a specific antidote for some), but for many, they are a significant advance over warfarin. To aid providers caring for patients on anti-platelet and anticoagulants, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) has been producing some outstanding apps. Previously on iMedicalApps we reviewed their outstanding Anticoag Evaluator and DAPT calculator apps. An additional resource is the excellent MAQI2 Anticoagulation Toolkit from the University of Michigan and insurer Blue Cross Blue Shield. How should providers handle patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation on … Continue reading

Opinion: Harry Boxer’s six biotechnology stocks to watch – MarketWatch

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

While the broader stock market fell Monday, many biotech shares continued to outperform. The big mover was TG Therapeutics Inc. TGTX, -6.88% which soared 90% after releasing positive results from its Phase 3 clinical trial of its treatment for high-risk leukemia patients. The stock closed up $4.85 to $10.20 on 33.7 million shares, which is 34 times its daily average. The stock blew through several layers of resistance, but pulled back at the close below resistance from the April high at around $10.50. A breakthrough there should get the stock to $13 and then $15. Support is at the days low of $9.10 and then $8. Short interest of 22 times its average volume could accelerate the advance. Concert Pharmaceuticals Inc. CNCE, +5.11% rocketed 62% Monday on news that Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. VRTX, +0.94% will be acquiring the companys cystic fibrosis drug, CTP-656. The stock closed at $15.64, up $5.99, at around the mid-range of the days action, which bodes well for a follow-through. Volume of 10.5 million shares was more than 85 times its average. Watch for a retest the days intraday high at $18.48, a breakthrough that could get the stock moving to test its highs from November … Continue reading

In 2000, two landmark papers started a revolution in our ability to design entirely new functions inside cells. The authors took two electronic circuits an oscillator and a switch and built the equivalent from living matter (M. B. Elowitz and S. Leibler Nature 403, 335338 (2000); T. S. Gardner et al. Nature 403, 339342; 2000). Life became a machine. To many, including me, this was a profound moment: the beginning of the field of synthetic biology. Now an international enterprise with the potential to transform our lives, synthetic biology crosses age and organizational boundaries, and involves large corporations, small start-ups, academics and tinkerers. In Synthetic, talented science historian Sophia Roosth describes her observations of the field's early evolution the fruit of embedding herself in the working lives of synthetic biologists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. She chronicles the adventures of players such as bioengineer Drew Endy and computer engineer Tom Knight, who championed the field. She covers highlights including whether we can patent new life and how automation is changing the way … Continue reading
