Counting microbes on a smartphone – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

March 8, 2017 Using a watershed algorithm, the APD Colony Counter App developed by A*STAR researchers can cheaply count the bacterial colonies on a culture plate on-the-go. Credit: A*STAR Bioinformatics Institute An Android application could dramatically change how microbiologists quantify data and how they go about their work. The 'APD Colony Counter App' suite was developed by A*STAR scientists working with Temasek Polytechnic graduates. Downloaded almost 9,000 times in less than a year, the app provides a cost-effective, accurate alternative to a laborious manual task and lets researchers analyse their data over coffee, with just a few taps on their phone. In 2015 Samuel Gan and his team from the A*STAR Bioinformatics Institute and James Cook University, Singapore, were studying how bacterial counts in human noses and ears correlated with psychological stress, wellbeing and happiness. Simultaneously, they were stressing out over the significant amount of time needed to quantify their data. Counting bacterial colonies on even a single culture plate is a laborious task which can take up to half an hourand Gan's team was quantifying hundreds. "To manually count these plates takes a lot of time and effortand can bring about error from fatigue," explains Gan. While expensive lab … Continue reading

Anthony Alessi: Bioengineering could help orthopedic injuries – Norwich Bulletin

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

Anthony Alessi For The Bulletin Bioengineering is the term best used to describe the utilization of multiple disciplines to solve a health-related problem. The incorporated disciplines involved often include medicine, life sciences, mathematics and engineering. Most recently, bioengineering has emerged as a potential solution for many orthopedic injuries, including those related to sports. Some of the most promising research has been in the area of tendon and ligament regeneration. Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are among the most common and disabling sports-related injuries. According to the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, there are approximately 150,000 ACL tears each year. These injuries account for approximately $500 million in health care costs annually in the United States. The knee is a hinged joint where the femur and tibia articulate. The bony surfaces are cushioned by cartilage. Four main ligaments hold the entire joint together: the ACL, posterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and the lateral collateral ligament. ACL injuries are most common in high-intensity sports, including soccer, football and basketball. Damage can result from sudden changes in direction, landing awkwardly after jumping or direct impact from a collision. Bioengineering is being used to build new ligaments by applying stem cells to a … Continue reading

Anatomy of unions – Ashland Daily Press

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

Opinions are like noses - everybody has one. But having worked for and against unions, I believe they are very valuable to society and every workplace. However, just like any other organization or political party, unions can make mistakes and I have watched them make some doozies. Yet, in the end, I find those who complain the most do not realize their value or how things are supposed to work. During my career, I have belonged to four different unions and have worked against 24 different unions, and there is nothing better than a strong management and a strong union. The relationship between union and management is exactly like a teeter-totter or a marriage. One side should never have too much power over the other, and the relationship requires cooperation to make it work at maximum potential. I know there are many folks on both sides who believe they should have all the marbles, but that is what really causes the demise of the entire operation. Union membership has been on the decline for years, and the actions of the Wisconsin Governor and Republican-controlled Legislature have made it easy here in Wisconsin. There are a number of folks who are … Continue reading

Anatomy of the fight with Europe – Yeni afak English

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

I asked a friend for a three- to four-day summary of the German media, and for some reason, the news and comments seemed very familiar. Whatever the Turkish media's attitude toward German policies is, the position in Germany is the same in the opposite direction. Turkey in German media It appears that President Recep Tayyip Erdoan's statements, especially his comparison of the current German government to Nazis, have provoked the German media quite a bit. One of the major German dailies, Bild, published the headline, When will Merkel's patience run out? She is being criticized for keeping her silence amid Erdoan'd harsh comments. Bild is in favor of all Turkish politicians being barred from speaking in Germany. The tone used in the article is interesting: Why are these Turkish haters allowed to speak in our country? The newspaper is reacting toward Economy Minister Nihat Zeybeki's speech. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has also reached the verge of severing ties: Germany is not a country that is very dependent on Turkey. It has shown great patience until now. Propaganda turning to violence in Europe I guess if we were to review the Dutch, French and Austrian media, we would come across similar articles … Continue reading

Study: Cannabinoids May Help Treat Traumatic Brain Injury – TheJointBlog (blog)

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

Cannabinoids may provide a potential treatment option for traumatic brain injury, according to new research. The study was published in the latest issue of the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology, and published online by the U.S. National Institute of Health. The endogenous cannabinoid (endocannabinoid) system regulates a diverse array of physiological processes and unsurprisingly possesses considerable potential targets for the potential treatment of numerous disease states, including two receptors (i.e., CB1 and CB2 receptors) and enzymes regulating their endogenous ligands N-arachidonoylethanolamine (anandamide) and 2-arachidonyl glycerol (2-AG), states the studys abstract. Increases in brain levels of endocannabinoids to pathogenic events suggest this system plays a role in compensatory repair mechanisms. It continues; Traumatic brain injury (TBI) pathology remains mostly refractory to currently available drugs, perhaps due to its heterogeneous nature in etiology, clinical presentation, and severity. Here, we review pre-clinical studies assessing the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids and manipulations of the endocannabinoid system to ameliorate TBI pathology. Specifically, the study notes, manipulations of endocannabinoid degradative enzymes, CB1 and CB2 receptors, and their endogenous ligands have shown promise in modulating cellular and molecular hallmarks of TBI pathology such as; cell death, excitotoxicity, neuroinflammation, cerebrovascular breakdown, and cell structure and remodeling. TBI-induced behavioral deficits, … Continue reading

Researchers identify how inflammation spreads through the brain after injury – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2017

March 8, 2017 Researchers have identified a new mechanism by which inflammation can spread throughout the brain after injury. This mechanism may explain the widespread and long-lasting inflammation that occurs after traumatic brain injury, and may play a role in other neurodegenerative diseases. The findings were published today in a study in the Journal of Neuroinflammation. This new understanding has the potential to transform how brain inflammation is understood, and, ultimately, how it is treated. The researchers showed that microparticles derived from brain inflammatory cells are markedly increased in both the brain and the blood following experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI). These microparticles carry pro-inflammatory factors that can activate normal immune cells, making them potentially toxic to brain neurons. Injecting such microparticles into the brains of uninjured animals creates progressive inflammation at both the injection site and eventually in more distant sites. Research has found that neuroinflammation often goes on for years after TBI, causing chronic brain damage. The researchers say that the microparticles may play a key role in this process. Chronic inflammation has been increasingly implicated in the progressive cell loss and neurological changes that occur after TBI. These inflammatory microparticles may be a key mechanism for chronic, … Continue reading

Cognitive testing tool used to assess traumatic brain injuries in … – Summit Daily News

Sponsored Content Program encourages student athletes and recreationists to take computerized tests that can guide treatment strategies later on Written by Lauren Glendenning Brought to you by St. Anthony Summit Medical Center There's a powerful tool helping health care providers evaluate and treat traumatic brain injuries in Summit County, but many potential patients who could benefit such as skiers, snowboarders, cyclists and student athletes, among others aren't using it. Anyone between the ages of 5 and 59 can take a 30-minute computerized test, called the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test, or ImPACT. This $15 baseline test measures cognitive functioning in the healthy brain. When compared with a post-concussive test, a physician can better evaluate the injury to the brain and develop an individualized course of treatment for optimum recovery. "When you do have a concussion injury, it can be used as a tool to help you return to play," said Jennifer Kagan RN, St. Anthony's Traumatic Brain Injury program coordinator. The medical center launched the TBI program in 2010 as a response to the growing number of head injuries it was treating, Kagan said. The program, which partners with national brain and spinal cord injury prevention organization Think First, … Continue reading

Multiple sclerosis left Alexa Silvers legally disabled at sixteen, but an unpublicized treatment option completely cured her. By Tylah Silva, Emerson College Alexa Silvers is a college student, survivor and an all-around amazing human being. The biggest obstacles most of us had to face at sixteen were hormonal acne and a bad breakup. Silvers had to deal with multiple sclerosis. The autoimmune disease known as M.S. attacked her legs and put her in wheelchair. The doctors told Silvers that treatments could help, but that ultimately her condition was permanent. They were wrong. Through it all, Silvers kept a faithful mind, putting her efforts into her treatment and researching a cure. Then, she stumbled upon stem cell research. With the help of her mother, many charitable donators and a staff of skillful doctors, Silvers was cured after having M.S. for four years. Now, this University of Nevada at Reno student is making an effort to get the word out on stem cell treatments. Tylah Silva: What was it like being diagnosed with M.S. at 16? Alexa Silvers: It was completely life changing. I suddenly felt like an outcast, and felt like I was dealing with an issue that even my closest … Continue reading
