Thursday’s Biotech Insights: Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc (AUPH), Puma Biotechnology Inc (PBYI) – Smarter Analyst

Posted: Published on March 5th, 2017

Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:AUPH) shares skyrocketed over 65% this morning, after the drug maker announced top-line results from its AURA-LV Phase IIb study with voclosporin (VCS) in patients with lupus nephritis (LN) that showed at 48 weeks, the study met its complete remission (CR) and partial remission (PR) endpoints. FBR analyst Vernon T. Bernardino commented, We are impressed with the results, as CRs and PRs at 48 weeks exceeded CRs and PRs at 24 weeks, with one exception. As a reminder, each study arm included standard of care mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) as background therapy and a forced steroid taper. There were no unexpected safety signals or deaths observed in VCS-treated patients. Thus, in addition to strong efficacy, VCS appears to allow safe steroid sparing. We think the results are robust and bode well for a successful Phase III trial, which could make VCS the first approved therapy for LN. As of this writing, the 4 analysts polled by TipRanks (in the past 6months) rate Aurinia stock a Buy. With a return potential of 39%, the stocks consensus target price stands at $8.50. Puma Biotechnology Inc (NASDAQ:PBYI) shares lost one-quarter of their value today, after competitor Roche announced positive top-line results from … Continue reading

Developmental Biology class responds to ‘Pro-life’ article – Concordiensis

Posted: Published on March 5th, 2017

Dear Mr. Kailey, Thank you for raising the important issues surrounding the pro-life side of the abortion debate to the Union community. As students of developmental biology, we would like to address a few points about embryonic development discussed in the article Political Faceoff: Pro-Life published on April 28, 2016. Our hope is to elucidate the circumstances of development so that our friends can fully understand the biological elements of life versus personhood, which we feel are not the same. Mr. Kailey wrote, We know living things instantly when we see them. All the qualities of life are recognizable in the form of an unborn child. Most women who seek an abortion do not understand the development of a baby, and do not realize that within the first weeks a child will have developed limbs, nerves and even functioning organs. As a class, we have looked under the microscope at a single-celled embryo (from a sea urchin) and seen life, but did not recognize qualities of life such as love, empathy and conscious thought. Life is not the same as personhood. There is no way to deny that an embryo in the womb is alive. During the early stages of … Continue reading

The anatomy of heartbreak – The Kathmandu Post

Posted: Published on March 5th, 2017

What I felt for her was profound and real. I felt every bit of it as much as the hunger that stings my stomach and as much as the anger that blinds me. Yes, it was that real and strong. I know how genuine it was Mar 5, 2017- The intensity of your love defines the intensity of your heartbreak. The deeper your love, the more unfathomable is your heartbreak. The shallower your love, the more fleeting your heartbreak is. Perhaps, my love was far too deep. If not, why would I take forever to recover from our abrupt end? Why would I take forever to move on? Why would I take this long to be the person I knew I was supposed to be in the real world? How would I even know my love was deep when, in fact, I wasnt even there? All there was is the love itself. I was the love. Yes, I was love itself. A heart breaks when your grand expectation from someone seems impossible to be met. A heart breaks when the utopian universe inside your head starts collapsing before it even sees the light of the day. A heart breaks when … Continue reading

Anatomy of an Error: Fazio & Mertens – Chiesa Di Totti

Posted: Published on March 5th, 2017

We have all quite rightly marveled at the rebirth of Federico Fazio this season. After bouncing between Spurs and Sevilla prior to moving to Roma, the accepted wisdom was that Fazio was just another in a long name of players long on talent and short on results. Based on his statuesque figure and technique, Fazio profiled as the ideal, albeit it a bit slow, centerback; one who could be the foundation upon which your backline was built. For a variety of reasons, it took Fazio several years and several more changes of sceneries to put it altogether. Fortunately for us, Roma has been the beneficiary of that latent development, as Fazio has been, without a doubt, one of the best defenders in Serie A this season, so please do not take what follows as an overarching critique of Fazios abilities nor a harbinger of bad things to come. He simply goofed up, as well all do, and its been such a long time since weve dissected an individual play, I thought it might be interesting to analyze exactly what went wrong. First up, the goal in total As we discussed yesterday, this goal was partially a product of Fazios error … Continue reading

Keithley’s Korner: Big benefits from Stem Cell Therapy – Ruidoso News

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2017

Tim Keithley, Guest columnist 7:45 a.m. MT March 2, 2017 Tim Keithley(Photo: Courtesy) Like a lot of folks who love to go skiing, play tennis, and enjoy the Ruidoso year-round beautiful weather, I became discouraged when my right knee went out climbing down a staircase recently. I waited a few days figuring that it might heal like it always has done before. But this time the injury felt different and seemed to be getting worse. Turns out you have a torn tendon in your right knee, Dr. Steven Rath of Fusion Medical Spa said on New Mexico in the Morning. It obviously wasnt going to heal itself, so we had Tim come in and consider stem cell therapy, Dr. Rath said. It turns out that we were able to help his body heal itself without putting him through painful knee surgery. Within a day after the procedure this week, the knee was sore from having the shots injected right into the tendon, but the regular pain had subsided. It made me a believer in the stem cell therapy Dr. Rath has been talking about on the radio for some time. Heres a simple explanation of the procedure: Dr. Rath draws … Continue reading

Stem cell treatment changed the life of one guest at Trump’s speech … – CNN

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2017

She credits an experimental stem cell treatment with giving her new hope for her health and her future -- a newfound hope that also caught attention of Republican Rep. Pete Olson. "She is the face of the 21st Century Cures Act because of what she's gone through in her life," he said Tuesday. "It became pretty clear to me that ... I (have) got to tell her story," he said. "That's why she's here: She's awesome." Immediately after the House vote, Hughes said, Olson called her at home to invite her to be his guest of honor. "I still cannot believe I will be in the same room as our President and lawmakers," she said before attending Trump's speech. It took Crowley's father, John, to launch the New Jersey biotechnology company Amicus Therapeutics to identify a drug treatment that would save her life, Trump said. "If we slash the restraints, not just at the FDA but across our Government, then we will be blessed with far more miracles like Megan," he said. "In fact, our children will grow up in a Nation of miracles." Hughes spent most of her adolescence hospitalized, as she became so sick that she could barely … Continue reading

Sanofi, Regeneron say latest Dupixent eczema drug tests positive – Reuters

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2017

PARIS Drugmakers Sanofi and Regeneron said on Saturday results from a one-year test of their Dupixent product aimed at adults with eczema or moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) had been positive. "In the CHRONOS study, Dupixent used with topical corticosteroids showed significantly greater clearance of skin lesions and overall disease severity compared to topical corticosteroids alone, which are commonly prescribed for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis," Andrew Blauvelt, the principal investigator of the study, said in a joint statement from the companies. "This study provides positive long-term data for Dupixent, which is important given atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease," he said. A biologics license application (BLA) for Dupixent was accepted for Priority Review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2016. (Reporting by Matthias Blamont; writing by John Irish; Editing by Clelia Oziel) MAIQUETIA, Venezuela Venezuelan plumber Marcos Heredia scoured 20 pharmacies in one day but could not find crucial medicines to stop his epileptic 8-year-old from convulsions that caused irreparable brain damage late last year.
