Hine/Flickr Biology teacher slams transphobic meme An American biology teacher responds perfectly toa viraltransphobic meme. The meme, posted below, labels transgender people as having a psychological disorder. Grace Pokela teaches biology atArlington High School in Lagrangeville, New York and identifies as gay. When she saw the meme, she put her biology knowledge into practice and wrote a response. She starts: First of all, in a sexual species, you can have females be XX and males be X (insects) You can have females be females because they developed in a warm environment and males be males because they developed in a cool environment (reptiles), she explains. After listing the many different mutations in flora and fauna, she moves on to break down human biology. You can be male because you were born female, but you have 5-alphareductase deficiency and so you grew a penis at age 12. You can be female because you have an X and a Y chromosome but you are insensitive to androgens, and so you have a female body. And you can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but your heart and brain are male. And vice effing versa. The biology teacher shared the full … Continue reading

Letter: Is adolescent sleep deprivation due to bad habits or biology? – The Ridgefield Press

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2017

To the Editor: It is common to default to learned behaviors or perceived ideals even when presented with solid scientific data. For example, many well-intending parents force children to eat out of concern they may not get adequate nutrition otherwise. Years ago, science demonstrated that this clean plate club approach is harmful, increasing the risk of eating disorders and obesity and reducing intake of healthy foods. Yet many good parents, in a moment of desperation, will coerce children to eat just one more bite. We must rely on the science, and not misconception, to protect the health of students by providing healthy start times. What the science says: Should teens turn off devices at night? Absolutely. Should they go to bed at a reasonable hour? Of course. Should we force them to be awake when their bodies are not biologically supposed to? No. We should not. TCU is participating in the Shriners College Classic this weekend, one of the marquee early-season tournaments in the country. But while a stacked field certainly makes the baseball intriguing, there is much more to being a part of this event than what happens on the diamond. The Shriners College Classic is one of the primary fundraisers for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, an organization that specializes in the treatment of Orthopaedics, Burn Care, Spinal Cord Injury, and Cleft Lip and Palate, regardless of a familys ability to pay. Prior to heading to Houston for the Classic, members of the TCU Baseball program got to share a special day with one of the Shriners patients, Strother Norman, who has been receiving treatment for spinal cord injury since 2012. Strother is a North Texas native who received the majority of his treatment at the Shriners Hospital in Chicago after an accident led to paralysis from his chest down. You can support the Shriners by attending the games this weekend or make a direct donation here. Karl Curtis: Brain injury is more common, and more debilitating, than you think – Madison.com

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2017

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Despite the fact traumatic brain injuries (TBI) occur more frequently than do breast cancer diagnoses, HIV/AIDS infections, multiple sclerosis cases, and spinal cord injuries combined, Im willing to bet most people did not know this. In truth, everyone should know about brain injury because it can strike anyone, anywhere at any time. All it takes is an accidental blow to the head or unexpected medical diagnosis. If this happens, as it did to my family, you will need to become aware quickly. Nineteen years ago my oldest son, then 9 years old, fought and beat brain cancer with the help of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the same treatments that saved his life also damaged his brain. The fact my sons post-treatment TBI has had a far greater effect on his life than cancer may sound incredible so some, but it is true. Cancer can be defeated, but a brain injury lingers. To be clear, the manner in which my son acquired his brain injury is unusual. The vast majority of TBI result from falls, motor vehicle accidents, assaults, and accidental collisions. This raises another important point: Nobody plans to get a brain … Continue reading
