Parkinson’s Foundation Receives Award To Develop National Recommendations To Improve Care For Women With … – PR Newswire (press release)

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2017

The Parkinson's Foundation began pursuing solutions in 2013 after identifying significant gender differences in Parkinson's treatment and care, as well as the lack of any coordinated effort to address them. Historically, care has been based on research that has focused too narrowly on men or neglected to consider relevant gender differences. For example, treatment protocols have not taken into consideration the fact that women can react differently to medications or are less likely to see specialists. "Research is beginning to prove what the medical community has long suspected: that women experience Parkinson's differently as it relates to diagnosis, symptoms, progression, treatment complications and care," said Allison Willis, M.D., M.S., co-lead of Women and PD TALK and an assistant professor of neurology, biostatistics and epidemiology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, a Parkinson's Foundation Center of Excellence. "We applaud the Parkinson's Foundation for putting the unique needs of women on the map with Women and PD TALK, a project that may lead to breakthroughs for women and men." The Women and PD TALK project will charge multidisciplinary leadership teams, comprising experts in the patient, research, and health care communities, with creating recommendations to advance women's healthcare. … Continue reading

Video Co-accused getting bail was 'a mistake' - Lee Schoombie 2016-02-23 14:12 Last month we spoke to Lee Schoombie, brother of the late Carl Schoombie who passed away following an altercation at Tiger Tiger nightclub in Cape Town last November. Lee came back to our studio to give us an update on the Justice for Carl campaign. Watch. WATCH Cape Town A man who died after being dragged from an Uber taxi and attacked, had brain injuries usually only seen in people killed in car accidents, the Western Cape High Court heard on Monday. "These [diffuse axonal] injuries are quite unusual in cases of assault," State witness Dr Gavin Kirk testified. "This is because the degree of force required for the acceleration is usually more than is typical in assaults, blows with fists, and punches," the forensic pathologist told the court. He said blows delivered in a boxing ring would rarely be sufficient to cause this type of injury. Brent Henry and Juane Jacobs are on trial for the murder of Carl Schoombie, who died from severe injuries after the two men accused him of starting trouble at the Tiger Tiger nightclub in November 2015. Multiple sclerosis: New technology improves cognition – Medical News Today

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2017

Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating neurological disease that affects tens of thousands of Americans. While there is yet no cure for the illness, researchers are working hard to understand its causes and mitigate its symptoms. New research investigates the effects of cutting-edge cognitive training technology on people with multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an often disabling neurological disease that affects one's muscles, vision, mood, and concentration. MS is estimated to affect anywhere between 250,000-350,000 people in the United States, and 200 new cases of MS are diagnosed each week. While there is currently no cure for the condition, treatment options are available for reducing the symptoms. The most common therapy consists of steroid drugs, which have been shown to speed up recovery. A new technology called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been recently shown to improve some of the symptoms of MS. The tDCS device was created by Marom Bikson, Ph.D., a professor of biomedical engineering at The City College of New York, in collaboration and Abhishek Datta, Ph.D., the chief technology officer of Soterix Medical. Researchers from New York University's (NYU) Langone's Multiple Sclerosis Comprehensive Care Center conducted a feasibility study for tDCS, and the results were … Continue reading

Poorly Jack Christmas, 8, needs 20k to get vital stem cell research – Hull Daily Mail

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2017

Comments(0) A little boy with a rare genetic condition which left him unable to walk or talk could be one of just five people to contribute to vital research. But Jack Christmas' family need to raise 20,000 to send the eight-year-old to America for the stem cell research in June. Jack, of Gainford Grove, east Hull, was diagnosed with Mowat Wilson Syndrome in April 2012, and is one of only 171 children across the world to have the condition, caused by a gene deficiency or mutation. Jack's mum, Dawn, said while the little boy is totally dependent on adults, he is making good progress. "Jack doesn't talk, has to have all food pureed, can't feed or dress himself, is doubly incontinent, in fact he is totally dependent on adults," she said. "All this said and done and he can now crawl, clap his hands and waves hello and goodbye as well as signing money and bird. Jack can also drink out of a feeder cup and on Christmas Eve 2015 Jack took his first unsteady independent steps." More news: Maisie Rice, 9, needs life-changing operation so she play with her twin As well as Mowat Wilson Syndrome, the Tweendykes School … Continue reading
