Blind sisters gain new vision from biology professor – KIII TV3

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017

Teacher helps blind sisters 'see' science Marvin Hurst, KENS 9:41 AM. CST February 22, 2017 SAN ANTONIO - Graciously seeking acceptance as normal college students is a box Katy and Olivia Shaw are trying to check. Yet, their navigation in the classroom and through everyday life yields the inquiry they've heard a million times: 'How does it feel to be blind?' "We do everything we can when it comes to living everyday life," Olivia said. The 19-year-olds said being visually impaired is the only normality they've known. They are both living with a disease affecting their vision called retinopathy. The sisters were diagnosed after being born prematurely. Katy is blind in her right eye and the teenager has some vision in her left eye which makes reading large print possible. Seeing is more challenging for Olivia. She has some light perception and some colors are visible to her. However, this hasn't stopped the Shaw sisters from doing chores at home, cooking and even earning academic fortitude. Katy has a 3.9 grade point average and Olivia has a 4.0. The sisters are both dual credit students at Northwest Vista College. "Definitely having this impairment has made it somewhat challenging," Katy said. … Continue reading

Quantum Biology Wandering where the edge is – Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017

I have had thoughts about quantum mechanics and biology for many years - ever since my thermodynamics class in chemistry as an undergrad. I discussed and developed them over the years. When I thought it was ready, decades ago, I wrote to Linus Pauling about my speculation that the most important differentiator for life is that from the molecular scale to the organization of organs, chaos (in the mathematical chaos theory sense) is the organizing principle. This means that living organisms are all potentially sensitive to quantum events. He was kind enough to write back, and I think it intrigued him, but there was no experiment that I could conceive of to do in support. Some years later, I was talking to an older psychiatrist friend about this idea in the context of pondering the mystery of consciousness. He liked it, and called up his friend Arthur Young, insisting that I go spend a day with Arthur. I think that Arthur Young, who had made is fortune on patents on the helicopter, was rather disappointed in me at first, as I was unaware of who he was, or his thinking prior to our day at his house in Berkeley, chatting … Continue reading

New UK bioinformatics institute’s aim is to sift discoveries from healthcare Big Data – The Lane Report

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017

UKs Institute for Biomedical Informatics team LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 20, 2017) In the modern era of electronic medical records and increasingly sophisticated care, one of the greatest opportunities for health innovation and medical discoveries lies not in a lab or a clinic, but in data. The progressively routine acquisition of many types of data in health care has created numerous opportunities, as well as challenges, in the analysis and interpretation of this data. The emerging academic discipline of data science which covers the entire lifecycle of data collection, curation, annotation, provenance, integration, exploration, sharing, secondary use and bioinformatics analytics has the potential to enable great advances in health care and medical knowledge. At the University of Kentucky, the new Institute for Biomedical Informatics (IBI) is leading the effort to translate big data into actionable information and leverage the latest technologies to advance biomedical sciences. A campuswide center for data-intensive, interdisciplinary research, IBI promotes translational team science, leads informatics and data science training programs, shares research and data infrastructure and enables technology innovation. UK is distinctly positioned in this capacity because of its large health data repository housed in the UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) Enterprise Data Trust, … Continue reading

Are Cyborgs In Our Future? ‘Homo Deus’ Author Thinks So – NPR

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017

The human species is about to change dramatically. That's the argument Yuval Noah Harari makes in his new book, Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow. Harari is a history professor at Hebrew University in Israel. He tells NPR's Ari Shapiro that he expects we will soon engineer our bodies and minds in the same way we now design products. On how we will begin to engineer bodies The three main ways of doing that, first of all, is to take our organic body and start tinkering with it with things like genetic engineering, speeding up natural selection and actually replacing it with intelligent design not the intelligent design of some God above the clouds, but our intelligent design. The other way is to start combining organic with inorganic parts and creating cyborgs. For four billion years all of evolution not just of humans but of all beings was confined to the organic realm, but very soon we might be able to break out of the organic realm using things like brain-computer interfaces, which combine organic parts like an organic brain with inorganic parts like bionic hands or eyes or ears. And then the third and most extreme path is … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo & Justin Chambers Tell Us How They Really Feel About a Possible Meredith-Alex … – E! Online

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017

Ever since Grey's Anatomy made Meredith a widow,a sentiment has begun to grow among the long-running ABC soap's fan base that maybe it's time to test the romantic waters between the good doc and her oldest friend Alex. Over the course of the last two seasons, there have been moments where the show seemed to toying with the idea itself. We've even advocated for the plot development on this very site. Finally, the stars themselves, Ellen Pompeo and Justin Chambers, are revealing their thoughts on the prospect of their characters getting together. Spoiler alert: They aren't feeling the love. "Justin is one of my favorite people on the planet," Pompeo told E! News direct from the Grey's Anatomy set. "We're really close, and it does feel weird. To potentially maybe have him as a love interest would be like kissing my brother. I used to say that about Patrick [Dempsey] all the time too because just we'd been together for so long." From the sound of things, the actress just might beperfectly fine with Meredith not finding romance with anyone else ever again. "The love interest part is not my favorite piece of this, I'll be honest,"she added. "Kissing guys … Continue reading

'Vagina Monologues' fights stigma linked to female anatomy – The Ithacan

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017

An older woman hesitantly shares her experiences of sexuality after recovering from cervical cancer. A lawyer-turned-prostitute intimately tells of her passion for other women. A young homeless woman recounts a memory of a traumatizing childhood rape. These are just a few of the many emotional and powerful monologues presented within playwright and activist Eve Enslers award-winning The Vagina Monologues. The Vagina Monologues discusses the stigma around womens sexuality and spurs dialogue about women, violence against women and the push for equality. Through monologues compiled by Ensler, such as My Revolution Begins in the Body, My Short Skirt and My Vagina Was My Village, the play shares personal accounts of womens experiences and emotions on this topic. All proceeds from the play, presented by IC Players at two show times Feb. 19 in the Emerson Suites, benefited V-day, a global activist movement dedicated to increase awareness of violence against women. The performances drew in about 140 people for both shows, and IC Players raised about $815 for the organization. After three years of acting in The Vagina Monologues, senior Jessica Braham, a theater arts management major at Ithaca College, directed the play. Braham said the play is especially relevant now because … Continue reading
