Anthropologist discusses biology of love – The Daily Princetonian

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2017

People today are more likely to have sex earlier but wait longer to get married, biological anthropologist Dr. Helen Fisher said in a lecture on Feb. 20. Were very well built to fall in love, for pair bonding and real sorrow in relationships, explained Fisher. A member of the Center for Human Evolutionary Studies in Rutgers Universitys Department of Anthropology, as well as chief scientific advisor of Match.com,Fisher talked about the science behind lovewhy we are attracted to one person instead of another, and how evolution shaped the biological processes behind human love. She began her talk by saying that love is universal and that the phenomenon is comparable among people regardless of gender, age, or sexual orientation. Contrary to what womens magazines may say, Fisher said men are more romantic than women. They fall in love more often and more quickly and are two-and-a-half times more likely to kill themselves when a relationship ends. She explained that there were three basic brain systems that govern mating and reproduction: one for sex drive, one for romantic attraction, and the last for attachment. I think all three of these brain systems evolved for different reasons, Fisher said. The first gave our … Continue reading

Anatomy Lab Live: Review of Solihull show where fine dining and autopsies are on menu – Birmingham Mail

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2017

Solihull has played host to a new dinner show with real heart... and lungs, brains and intestines. Because diners at the Village Hotel were offered an extra course with their meal - live dissection. Welcome to Anatomy Lab Live, the brainchild of teacher Sam Piri, who was inspired to create this evenings infotainment after watching the delight of schoolchildren studying biology. The event begins with a good dinner of salmon, served with roast potatoes, green beans and roasted butternut squash and carrots, followed by apple pie and custard or Eton mess - washed down with wine or lager. The only clue of what is to come is an unsettling table centre piece, made up of medical waste sacks, syringes, and petri dishes. After the food has been cleared away, a curtain is drawn back to reveal an operating theatre, complete with a body lying on a trolley, feet poking out from under a white sheet. Dressed in full scrubs, pathologist Sam peels back the blanket and reaches carefully into the gaping chest. There is a gasp from the audience as he pulls out the heart and lungs, holding them high for everyone to see, before setting them down on a … Continue reading

'Grey's Anatomy': Meredith Gets Caught Between Alex & Riggs in … – Moviefone

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2017

"Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 finally has some semi-good news for Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). ABC's scoop on Episode 15, "Civil War" sounds especially promising for fans who 1) want Meredith to get back in the hospital game after her suspension, and 2) want to see more of Meredith and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers). It's possible Mer and Alex may even get to work at the hospital at the same time again! ABC just released details -- although not yet photos -- on "Civil War," and this time it doesn't sound like Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominiczyk) is the main focus of the war. Instead, there are multiple battlefronts, including a work (and love?) triangle between Meredith, Alex, and Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson). Here's ABC's tease for "Civil War," which airs Thursday, March 9: "Richard, Jackson, April and Catherine tackle a grueling trauma case intensified by hospital politics. Amelia finally faces her feelings about Owen, and Meredith gets caught between Nathan and Alex over a patient." Obvious question: Who gets to be Iron Man in this "Civil War"? On a slightly more serious note, it's good to see Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) might actually start talking to her own husband again. The rest … Continue reading

Multiple sclerosis: Stem cell transplantation may halt disease progression – Medical News Today

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2017

New research provides further evidence of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as an effective treatment for multiple sclerosis, after finding the procedure halted disease progression for 5 years in almost half of patients. Lead study author Dr. Paolo Muraro, of the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London in the United Kingdom, and colleagues recently reported their findings in JAMA Neurology. The results come just a fortnight after another study revealed the success of a similar treatment in a small group of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). However, Dr. Muraro and team warn that further trials are needed to determine the efficacy and safety of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT), after a small number of patients died within 100 days of treatment. In AHSCT, a patient's own stem cells are harvested. The patient is then subject to high-dose chemotherapy to eliminate any diseased cells. Next, the harvested stem cells are returned to the patient's bloodstream, with the aim of restarting normal blood cell production. In simple terms, AHSCT "resets" the immune system. "We previously knew this treatment reboots or resets the immune system - and that it carried risks - but we didn't know how long the benefits … Continue reading

How baseball players are trying stem cells to avoid Tommy John – Yahoo Sports

TEMPE, Ariz. On the day he hoped would save his elbow, Garrett Richards laid face down on a table with his back exposed. A doctor guided a needle into the iliac crest of his pelvic bone and began to extract bone marrow. Richards was wide awake, the blessing of local anesthesia saving him from physical pain but not the anxiety that crept into his head: Is this really going to work? Within a few minutes, the harvested marrow was hurried to a centrifuge, spun to separate the good stuff, mixed into a slurry of platelet-rich plasma and readied to inject into Richards damaged right elbow. Rather than the standard tear across his ulnar collateral ligament, Richards ran lengthwise along the middle of his UCL, a rare manifestation of an increasingly commonplace injury that almost always ends with Tommy John surgery. Not in this case. While he could have chosen that route, he wanted to explore first the efficacy of the aforementioned good stuff: stem cells. Today, Garrett Richards is darting 98-mph fastballs again. I feel as good as I ever have throwing a baseball, he said Monday from Tempe Diablo Stadium, where the Los Angeles Angels, perhaps the most Tommy … Continue reading

The Importance of Sourcing the Correct Antibodies for Stem Cell Research: An Interview with Dr. Andrew Crain at the … – Benzinga

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2017

Stem cell research holds untold potential towards new cures and treatments for numerous diseases that have no remedies today. However, scientific pursuits will continue to suffer from high levels of irreproducible research without a systemic change to the industry. San Diego, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2017 The medical potential of stem cells is both extensive and astounding, and there are exciting prospects for their use, in multiple areas of medicine, due to their differentiating characteristics. Stem cells are unique as the have the potential to renew themselves through cellular division, and they have the ability to be induced to become tissue or organic-specific cells with special functions. Stem cell therapy in the form of bone marrow transplantation has already been utilised for decades, however research is now heavily focussed on alternative ways in which stem cells can be utilized, and they are now being consideration for applications including; in combination with gene therapy, for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, to remove unwanted cancer cells, and for use on scaffolds, with the capability of forming three-dimensional structures. Although the possibilities within regenerative medicine are endless; the associated challenges are still a hindering factor. The properties of stem cells are still incompletely … Continue reading
