Behind the Blue – Parkinson’s disease research and treatment with Dr. Craig van Horne – UKNow (press release)

Posted: Published on February 20th, 2017

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 17, 2017) Parkinsons disease is a long-term, progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. An estimated seven to 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinsons. The symptoms for the disease usually develop slowly over time, and among the obvious are shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty in walking. Currently, there is no cure for Parkinsons, though there are medications that can slow the progression of symptoms. Dr. Craig van Horne is an associate professor of neurosurgery with UK HealthCare. He focuses his research on cellular and surgical therapies for Parkinsons disease. Deep Brain Stimulation, or DBS, is a surgical procedure that uses electrodes to stimulate areas of the brain, effectively overriding the damaged nerves electrical impulses to reduce many of the symptoms related to Parkinsons disease. Dr. van Horne is testing an experimental procedure called DBS+, which uses peripheral nerve tissue to prompt nerve regeneration and slow the disease process. Early data shows that DBS+ has improved symptoms for some patients, and van Horne hopes it will become the new standard of care for the treatment of Parkinsons symptoms, improving quality of life for patients who are diminished by their disease. On this … Continue reading

Students frustrated trying to get into UW’s strict engineering program – The Seattle Times

Posted: Published on February 19th, 2017

It gets harder every year to get into some of the University of Washingtons most in-demand majors, creating a cutthroat system of competition at the flagship university. By the end of his freshman year at the University of Washington, Jack Kussick believed there was no point in even applying to get into the UWs bioengineering program. Kussick had sailed through Seattles Roosevelt High with top grades. When he entered the UW, the Seattle native was thinking about a career designing cutting-edge rehabilitation tools that could help wounded veterans get back on their feet, or athletes devastated by injury return to their sports. But college required an entirely different type of studying. As a freshman, Kussick stumbled in a few classes before he figured out a system that worked for him. By then, he believed, it was already too late. In order to be competitive for bioengineering, a counselor told him, hed need to begin making As in nearly every class. Even then, his chances of being admitted were slim. At a time when students are encouraged to go into careers in science and technology, as well as business, its becoming harder and harder to do so in some majors at … Continue reading

Framework for building bio-bots – Next Big Future

Posted: Published on February 19th, 2017

For the past several years, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been developing a class of walking "bio-bots" powered by muscle cells and controlled with electrical and optical pulses. Now, Bioengineering Professor Rashid Bashirs research group is sharing the recipe for the current generation of bio-bots. Their how-to paper is the cover article in Nature Protocols. The protocol teaches every step of building a bio-bot, from 3D printing the skeleton to tissue engineering the skeletal muscle actuator, including manufacturers and part numbers for every single thing we use in the lab, explained Ritu Raman, now a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Bioengineering and first author of the paper This protocol is essentially intended to be a one-stop reference for any scientist around the world who wants to replicate the results we showed in our PNAS 2016 and PNAS 2014 papers, and give them a framework for building their own bio-bots for a variety of applications, Raman said. Nature Protocols - A modular approach to the design, fabrication, and characterization of muscle-powered biological machines As stated in the paper, "Biological machines consisting of cells and biomaterials have the potential to dynamically sense, process, respond, and adapt to … Continue reading

The Anatomy of Anger – Huffington Post

Posted: Published on February 19th, 2017

Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret." ~ Ambrose Bierce Over the years I have become an avid student of energy and how it moves. What I have discovered is that as human beings, not only do we consist of pure energy, we are also conduits through which it flows. Once we understand that thought is energy in one of its purest forms well become aware that the thoughts we think make us energy directors. Thus, when we have misguided thoughts fueled by the energy of anger our words can be very destructive. When I was a kid, I had a hair-trigger temper. By the time I was a teen it didnt take much to set me off and ignite my anger. Years later I discovered that I had real issues around my physical stature. Being the skinniest, shortest kid in the schoolyard made me a moving target for the local bullies and just about any of my peers. As an adult I began to understand where my anger was coming from; my own sense of inferiority and defensiveness. On more than one occasion thoughts of anger fueled by enraged emotions … Continue reading

Treating Cerebral Palsy With Stem Cells – Financial Tribune

Posted: Published on February 19th, 2017

The biggest national project to treat patients with Cerebral Palsy (CP) through injection of stems cells from umbilical cord blood into the brain will be trialed in the country by the end of the current year in March, said Dr. Morteza Zarrabi, head of Royan Institute. The plan will be implemented jointly by Royan Institute, Childrens Medical Center (affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences), and Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization. In the first phase, it would provide treatment to 130 children with CP between the ages 5-13, IRNA quoted him as saying, on the sidelines of the conference Stem Cells and Their Potentials for Clinical Application, held at Kashan University of Medical Sciences Thursday. In September 2016, the treatment was tried out in a few children with CP in some hospitals, and the results were satisfactory, he said. Many questions must be answered before stem cell treatment becomes a success in the medical field such as: which of the various types of stem cells would be the best to use; what is the best way in which to use these cells and how will they affect the body; when does the treatment need to be given to achieve the best … Continue reading
