Cardiologists create hilarious heart-healthy memes to celebrate … – ABC News

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

Eat your heart out, heart disease. Nothing will get your heart pumping this Valentines Day quite like these Kansas City cardiologists. The doctors at Saint Lukes Hospital used hilarious heart-healthy memes to celebrate the romantic day. We wanted to find a creative way to help patients see the lighthearted and caring nature of these expert physicians while also sharing the important message of heart disease prevention, and encouraging our community to take control of their heart health so they can avoid serious issues in the future, Rebecca Sesler, vice president of marketing at Saint Lukes Health System, wrote to ABC News in an email. Saint Lukes is one of the top 20 cardiology and heart surgery programs in the country, which means our cardiologists and surgeons treat the most complex and challenging heart issues every day, she added. Their timing is perfect as February is also American Heart Month. The hospital explained that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than 370,000 Americans every year. It claims the lives of more women each year than deaths from all cancers combined and strikes someone in the U.S. every 42 seconds. However, heart disease is … Continue reading

Biology Isn’t Bigotry: Why Sex Matters in the Age of Gender Identity … – Heritage.org

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

As gender identity ordinances and bathroom battles sweep the nation, ordinary Americans have had to confront the question of whether their long-standing beliefs about the sexes are based on biology or bigotry. While the debate has polarized many, it has also served to unite exceptionally unlikely allies. In something of an historical first, self-professed radical feminists and conservative women are tabling their ideological differences and standing in solidarity against gender identity legislation, which they have come to recognize as threatening the civil rights of women. The Hands Across the Aisle Coalition is a bi-partisan group of women who have committed to working together and leveraging their collective resources and platforms to oppose aspects of the transgender movement. The following is the transcript of my introduction at an event I hosted at the Heritage in which five of the coalitions leaders offer a perspective the mainstream media too often ignores on this very important issue. I also encourage you watch the entirety of the event posted in the video below. Thank you, John, and thank you everyone for joining us today for what promises to be an informative and enlightening conversation from voices the mainstream media has ignored. Id also like … Continue reading

Belle Beats Stockholm Syndrome and Biology in ‘Beauty and the Beast’ – Inverse

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

The original telling of Beauty and the Beast is a story about Stockholm syndrome: Beauty is held captive by a creepy monster, but in time she leans to feel deep empathy for her captor and falls in love with him. But Emma Watson, who plays Belle in the upcoming Disney remake, insists that the problematic phenomenon is no longer an issue. The new Belle, it seems, hasnt just figured out how to beat a scary sociological condition she might be fighting the dictates of human evolution as well. In 2014, University of Oregon evolutionary psychologist Michelle Scalise Sugiyama, Ph.D., proposed the theory that humans give in to Stockholm Syndrome because our early ancestors used it as a coping mechanism. Early humans, she wrote in the journal Human Nature, were often taken as prisoners by other groups during wars, and they were more likely to live in the long run if they learned to adapt to their new group rather than resist the entire time they were captive. This trait was especially important for women because they were especially vulnerable, she says. Her theory suggests that the original Belle learned to comply with the Beasts demands because, like her human ancestors, … Continue reading

RU-N Biology Professor Unlocks Method to Sequence DNA of … – Rutgers Newark

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

An RU-N Biology professor recently discovered a way to extract and sequence DNA from rare and extinct animals preserved in historic museum collections. Assistant Professor Sara Ruane, along with Louisiana State University Professor Chris Austin, developed a protocol and tested a method for DNA sequencing several thousand genes from preserved snake specimens dating back to the early 1900s. The breakthrough brings these once dormant specimens into the modern age of genomics, allowing scientists to start mapping the evolutionary relationships of various snake and other rare and extinct species, and furthering the study of the earths ever-changing biodiversity. I had always thought it would be great if we could extract DNA from preserved specimens, especially those preserved in formalin, says Ruane. Now that we have the computational power to handle short fragments of DNA for sequencing, it was just a matter of optimizing the extraction protocol. Formalin, a variant of formaldehyde, preserves animal specimens and tissue samples for up to 500 years. But according to Ruane, it also locks up the DNA in these specimens, making it hard to extract. And DNA naturally degrades into tiny pieces over time, rendering it difficult to sequence using a conventional approach called the Sanger … Continue reading

LUDLOW, Ky. - First, shock from one Northern Kentucky community as it learned about the startling death of a disabled teenager. Now comes action. Over the past few days PatSchlicksupadmits there's beena lot to take in. "You just can't explain it. I was devastated," Schlicksup told WCPO on Thursday. Schlicksup didnt know 18-year-old Joseph Bishop, but he worked with Josephs mother. Schlicksup said Jamie Bishop called him Sunday and said her son had died "She said she had to take him off life support and she was real broken up about it," Schlicksup sai A few days later Schlicksup and the rest of the community learned that Jamie and her parents, Raymond and Sharon Martin, had been charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection with Joseph's death. A criminal complaint says the trio failed to provide adequate care and medical treatment for the teen, who was born with muscular dystrophy. Court documents say Joseph's mother and grandparents left him bedridden in their home for months. "It was a tragedy then, it's even more so of a tragedy in light of what all has happened," Schlicksup said. Schlisksup wanted to do something about it, so he created a GoFundMe page to help … Continue reading

Method developed by biomedical scientists could help in treatment of several diseases – Science Daily

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

In cells, DNA is first converted to RNA, and RNA is next converted to proteins -- a complicated process involving several other steps. Nonsense-mediated RNA decay (NMD) is a processing pathway in cells that, like a broom, cleans up erroneous RNA to prevent its productive conversion into an aberrant protein, which could lead to disease. In some diseases, like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also called Lou Gehrig's disease), excessive junk RNA is produced, possibly contributing to the disease. In such instances, more NMD is useful to get rid of the junk RNA. In other diseases, such as muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis, a decrease in NMD is a better option. In these diseases, the NMD pathway eliminates the RNA, resulting in a complete loss of the gene function. But a defective RNA may translate to a semi-functional protein, which is better than no RNA for protein formation in cells. And so, a tuned-down NMD is more useful. Sika Zheng, an assistant professor of biomedical sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of California, Riverside, and colleagues now report in the journal RNA that they have come up with a method in the lab that detects NMD efficiency inside … Continue reading

A Breakthrough in Stem Cell Treatment? – Equities.com

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

Asterias Biotherapeutics (AST) continues to generate excitement and buzz around its stem cell treatment for catastrophic spinal cord injury (SCI). I wrote about this historic event back in September. Thats when the company first released results about this transformative medical breakthrough. Asterias has now released follow-up data. This was gathered at six and nine months after six quadriplegics received treatment. All six continue to show improvement in motor function and sensation. This is truly wonderful news for those with SCI. There are also broader medical implications and these should be of great interest to investors. The difference between this stem cell therapy and traditional drug therapies is huge. Drug therapies have specific and mechanistic impacts. But stem cells derived from embryonic cells work a different way. They draw on the massive DNA databanks in their nuclei. They then use these genetic programs to interact with their surroundings and repair damaged structures. The Asterias oligodendrocyte progenitor cells were derived from a single unused embryo (from an IVF procedure in the late 1990s). Such embryos are often discarded. But this one was donated to create an unlimited number of therapeutic cells. Both the Bush and Obama Administrations approved the cell line. When … Continue reading
