Parkinson’s: ‘Genetic switch’ may play key role in preserving brain … – Medical News Today

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

The discovery of a "genetic switch" that helps to maintain the health of brain cells could lead to new treatments that could delay or even prevent the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. So conclude researchers at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, who led a new study published in the journal Cell Death and Differentiation. Worldwide, more than 10 million people are living with Parkinson's disease, a progressive brainwasting disorder that affects movement. Parkinson's disease gives rise to symptoms that include: muscle rigidity; impaired gait, balance, and posture; tremors in the limbs, hands, face, and jaw; and problems with speech. The disease primarily impacts a part of the brain called the substantia nigra, where it gradually destroys vital brain cells, or neurons, that produce dopamine - a chemical messenger that is essential for controlling movement. The loss of dopamine-producing cells can happen for a number of reasons, but in some hereditary cases of Parkinson's disease, it can result from unhealthy mitochondria - tiny compartments inside cells that provide them with energy to function and stay alive. Some hereditary forms of Parkinson's disease are caused by mutations in the genes PINK1 and PARKIN, which play an important role in maintaining … Continue reading

BC government to cover expensive Parkinson’s treatment family has pleaded for – CBC.ca

When Jenny Wood first opened an email with the B.C. government announcement, she thought it was a hoax. But when she realized earlier today it was real and the B.C. government will now cover the Parkinson's drug her mom needs she burst into tears. "This is the news we just didn't think we would get," said Wood on the phone from Seattle, Wash. "This is what we've been fighting for." Wood's mother, Patti, 59, lives in Victoriaand was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Parkinson's disease in 2008. The drug they've been fighting to get covered is called Duodopa, which delivers a combination of medications in a gel through an intestinal pumpbut at a high cost of $60,000 per year. An oral medication with the same drug combination was already covered by B.C.'s PharmaCare planbut in a small number patients including Wood it doesn't act fast enough to relieve symptoms, said Wood. When those symptoms include gasping for breath, waiting up to an hour and a half for relief is too long, said Wood. "I spent my Christmas Eve trying to get my mom to breathe, she said. "My mom is only 59 years old, but she looks and feels … Continue reading

By Conor McParland OVER 14,000 has been raised to continue vital treatment for a Glengormley toddler with cerebral palsy. Aoibheann OConnor (3) was born at 28 weeks and suffers from hydrocephalus and cerebral palsy due to a brain haemorrhage shortly after birth. Over 14,000 has been raised so far for the three year-old to continue specialised ABR (Advanced Bio-Mechanical Rehabilitation) to ease the physical constraints of her condition. The therapy focuses on a form of deep tissue massage to improve the functional ability of the muscles and skeleton. Speaking to the North Belfast News, mum Aisling said she has already noticed an improvement in her daughters condition since she began treatment in October. Aoibheann suffers from cerebral palsy which makes all her limbs tight, but her body is weak, she explained. Through some research and talking to people, I found out about ABR therapy which helps build up tissue in the body. Weve been doing it since October and already we have seen a difference in her. She can balance a bit more herself and you can feel the strength coming into her body Its a really slow progress. Its about realigning your whole body again we can see some … Continue reading

A child undergoing therapy at Cerebral Palsy Clinic of Ramakrishna Mission in Visakhapatnam | RVK Rao VISAKHAPATNAM: The cerebral palsy clinic of Ramakrishna Mission in the city treats children affected by cerebral palsy, down syndrome, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), giving a ray of hope to the affected children. The clinic now adds Sandplay therapy, spider therapy and hydrotherapy. The clinic which previously catered only to the cerebral palsy patients, now offers therapy to autism, nerve palsy, down syndrome and ADHD. But the therapists at the clinic say that there is need for awareness among the parents. There are many parents who neglect their children affected with such syndromes. About 80 per cent of children affected with cerebral palsy is due to consanguineous marriages and in recent times there is an increase in the number of patients from Vizag district, while 20 per cent is from Odisha, said B Indira, Master of Physiotherapy (MPT), Neuro Sciences, in the clinic. However, while it was only 35 children who used to get treated till 2016, they increased to 64 of late which is mostly due to the word-of-mouth publicity, she added. Since the therapies are effective, the 25-year-old clinic is … Continue reading

New test may quickly identify mild traumatic brain injury with underlying brain damage – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

February 17, 2017 A new test using peripheral vision reaction time could lead to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment of mild traumatic brain injury, often referred to as a concussion, according to Peter J. Bergold, PhD, professor of physiology and pharmacology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and corresponding author of a study newly published online by the Journal of Neurotrauma. While most patients with mild traumatic brain injury or concussion fully recover, a significant number do not, and earlier diagnosis could lead to better management of patients at risk for developing persistent symptoms, according to Dr. Bergold and his co-authors. Lingering symptoms may include loss of concentration and/or memory, confusion, anxiety, headaches, irritability, noise and light sensitivity, dizziness, and fatigue. "Mild traumatic brain injury is currently diagnosed with subjective clinical assessments," says Dr. Bergold. "The potential utility of the peripheral vision reaction test is clear because it is an objective, inexpensive, and rapid test that identifies mild traumatic brain injury patients who have a more severe underlying injury." Dr. Bergold's co-authors include colleagues from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; The University of Texas at Dallas; Washington University; the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke; the Uniformed … Continue reading

Vitamins and aminoacids regulate stem cell biology – Phys.org – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

February 16, 2017 Credit: National Research Council of Italy An International Reserach Team coordinated by Igb-Cnr has discovered a key role of vitamins and amino acids in pluripotent stem cells. The research is published in Stem Cell Reports, and may provide new insights in cancer biology and regenerative medicine Vitamins and amino acids play a key role in the regulation of epigenetic modifications involved in the progression of diseases such as cancer. The research may have future implications in cancer biology. The study was published in Stem Cell Reports. "We found that two metabolites, vitamin C and the amino acid L-Proline, are important players in the control of stem cell behaviour. This study shows that pluripotent embryonic stem cells present in the earliest phases of development are pushed toward a more immature 'naive' state by vitamin C, while they are forced to acquire a 'primed' state in the presence of L-Proline. Thus, vitamin C and L-Proline exert opposite effects on embryonic stem cells, and this correlates with their ability to modify DNA (DNA methylation) without altering the sequence, but instead, the regulation of gene expression," explained researcher Gabriella Minchiotti. Stem cells possess the unique ability to self-renew and differentiate into … Continue reading

The biotechnology trial of the century over CRISPR patent settled in US court – NEWS.com.au

Posted: Published on February 17th, 2017

CRISPR is a life-changing genetic modification technology that could potentially cure cancer and eradicate genetic conditions before a child is born. But there is a dark side to the potential of this technology. The patent dispute over CRISPR technology has been settled. AN INFLUENTIAL US science advisory committee this week said genetic modification of human embryos should be allowed in the future to eliminate diseases, sparking new debate on a controversial topic. The report by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) caused concern among some researchers who fear that genetic tools could be used to boost certain peoples intelligence or create people with particular physical traits. Clinical trials for genome editing of the human germ line adding, removing or replacing DNA base pairs in gametes or early embryos could be permitted in the future, said the report, released Wednesday (AEST). But only, it added, for serious conditions under stringent oversight. The emergence of inexpensive and accurate gene-editing technology, known as CRISPR/Cas9, has fuelled an explosion of new research opportunities and potential clinical applications, both heritable and non-heritable, to address a wide range of human health issues, the report said. The committee of international experts was convened to examine scientific, ethical … Continue reading
