Promoting quality education: 'Use of innovative methods key in teaching anatomy' – The Express Tribune

Posted: Published on February 16th, 2017

FAISALABAD:The best way to teach modern anatomy is by combing multiple pedagogical resources to complement one another. Students appear to learn more effectively when multi-modal and system-based approaches are integrated. This was said by experts while speaking at a national workshop on teaching and research techniques in anatomy organised by Department of Anatomy, University of Agriculture on Wednesday. The inaugural session was chaired by UAF Vice-Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan. The experts said not a single teaching tool had been found to meet curriculum requirements of anatomy. The limitation on time, trained faculty and resources for gross anatomy courses in integrated and system based curricula, have led many medical and veterinary schools to abandon costly and time consuming decision based instructions in favour of alternative methods of instructions, including prosection, medical imaging, living anatomy and multimedia resources, the experts opined. UAF Vice-Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said UAF was taking all possible measures to produce trained manpower by ensuring quality education in the country. He said the UAF used to organise such events to raise awareness among the masses about different issues. Dean Veterinary Sciences Dr Ahrar Khan said poverty alleviation was directly linked to the agriculture and livestock sector. … Continue reading

Survival rate improves for extremely premature infants – Washington Post

Posted: Published on February 16th, 2017

By Jia Naqvi By Jia Naqvi February 15 at 5:00 PM Survival rates for very early preterm infants have improved slightly, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday. Those who survive are also somewhat less likely to suffer from neurodevelopmental impairments, the study found. Researchers gathered survival and neurodevelopmental impairment data for 4,000 extremely premature infants by analyzing records from a National Institutes of Health research network. The infants were born between 22 and 24 weeks of gestation, rather than after a normal 40-week pregnancy. Survival rates of such infants born between 2000 and 2011 rose from 30 percent to 36 percent. The percentage of preterm infants who did not develop neurological impairments increased from 16 percent to 20 percent. The survival rates are increasing over time, and the rates of impairment did not go up with that increase, which is very reassuring, said study author Rosemary Higgins, a program scientist at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Better health care for expectant mothers and newborns may be contributing to higher survival rates and a lower percentage of infants with neurodevelopmental impairments, according to the authors of the study. A brain injury is two times more likely to develop attention problems … – TheHealthSite

Those with severe injuries are five times more likely to develop secondary Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). People with mild to moderate brain injuries are two times more likely to have developed attention problems and those with severe injuries are five times more likely to develop secondary Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in an average of seven years after injury, reveals a study. Researchers from Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center in the US presented the study at annual meeting of the Association of Academic Physiatrists in Las Vegas. The findings indicated that parenting and home environment exert a powerful influence on recovery of these attention problems. Certain skills that can affect social functioning, such as speed of information processing, inhibition and reasoning, show greater long-term effects. Children with severe Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in optimal environments may show few effects of their injuries while children with milder injuries from disadvantaged or chaotic homes often demonstrate persistent problems. Many children do very well in long-term after brain injury and most do not have across the board deficits. The team is working to identify genes important to recovery after TBI and understand how these genes may interact with environmental factors to influence … Continue reading

Older women reduce their endometrial cancer risk with weight loss – KFGO

Posted: Published on February 16th, 2017

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 3:13 p.m. CST By Shereen Lehman (Reuters Health) - Postmenopausal women who intentionally lost weight over the course of three years had a much lower risk of endometrial cancer up to 11 years later compared to women whose weight didnt change, a U.S. study finds. Overall, women who intentionally lost 5 percent or more of their body weight had 29 percent lower risk of developing endometrial cancer during the study period, and the effect was most pronounced for obese women, whose risk dropped by 66 percent with weight loss. We decided to do the study because we realized that, although obesity increases the risk of endometrial cancer, research couldnt say if intentional weight loss, especially among older persons, could reduce that risk, lead author Juhua Luo, of the School of Public Health at Indiana University in Bloomington, told Reuters health in an email. Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in the U.S. and the fourth most common cancer among women. About 2.8 percent of American women will be diagnosed with endometrial cancer at some point during their lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute. Body fat is thought to increase risk of this hormone-sensitive … Continue reading
