Nutrition for Menopause: A Drug-Free Approach for All Phases – To Your Health

Posted: Published on February 15th, 2017

To Your Health February, 2017 (Vol. 11, Issue 02) By Seth Herbst, MD, FACOG Of all the changes women experience during their reproductive life, there is no doubt the most dreaded are the three phases of menopause. This is not surprising since all of the symptoms associated with menopause are replete with unpleasantness. The gradual depletion of estrogen production associated with aging is the catalyst for most menopausal symptoms. Lack of estrogen may affect other organs of the body including the brain, contributing to negative emotional well-being; as well as the skin, reducing thickness and elasticity. There is also evidence that declining estrogen levels may make women more vulnerable to heart disease and stroke. With such a comprehensive list of negative effects brought on by menopause, it is understandable that the most logical remedy for symptoms associated with menopause became the administration of synthetic hormones, or hormone replacement therapy. HRT came into use nearly six decades ago and was generally prescribed to women as they began to experience menopausal symptoms. However, as multiple studies over the decades associated traditional HRT with various cancers and other negative side effects, the use of artificial hormones to treat menopausal women has declined significantly. … Continue reading

Dr. Oz takes on those bogus for-profit stem cell clinics–and cuts them to shreds – Los Angeles Times

Posted: Published on February 15th, 2017

The undercover investigation youre about to see today is going to make you really angry, because were exposing the worst kind of scam one that takes advantage of those most vulnerable, stealing not just their money, but their hope, their dignity. Thats how Dr. Mehmet Oz introduces a series of segments scheduled to run on his daytime television program Tuesday. His quarry: those for-profit clinics offering supposed stem cell treatments for an implausible host of diseases unproven, unlikelyand very expensive cures. We reported on this noisome corner of medical pseudo-sciencelast year, outlining theabsence of scientific support for their treatmentand their intensive marketing pitches to hopeful patients. We reported that in a survey of stem cell tourism, stem cell scientist Paul Knoepfler of UC Davis and bioethicist Leigh Turner of the University of Minnesotaidentified 570 clinicsaround the U.S. offering stem cell interventions. Scores were concentrated in such hotspots as Beverly Hills, Phoenixand New York. Many were offering unproven therapies featuring the termstem cell as a marketing veneer. Dr. Ozs investigation of these clinics is a worthy addition to public awareness. Its must-viewing for patients and families desperate enough to contemplate turning to such clinics for succor, and for state and federal … Continue reading

Almac Discovery, RCSI form anticancer stem cell R&D pact – FierceBiotech

Posted: Published on February 15th, 2017

Almac Discovery and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)have teamed up to research the effect of ALM201 on cancer stem cells. Early preclinical data suggest ALM201 may render cancer stem cells susceptible to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, a mechanism of action that opens the door to use of the drug to prevent recurrence of tumors. RCSIs Professor Tracy Robson, who performed the initial research that led to the development of ALM201, will head up a team tasked with exploring the interaction between the drug and cancer stem cells. ALM201 is a peptide based on the protein FKBPL. Almac Discovery, the cancer R&D wing of the CRO Almac, is now bankrolling research to better understand the mechanism of action behind early evidence of the effect of ALM201 on the cancer cells. Cancer stem cells are a major barrier to successful radiotherapy and chemotherapy and can result in failure of these treatments. Our initial data demonstrates that ALM201 can transform these cells so they are no longer resistant to these therapies, Robson said in a statement. Researchers have recognized the value of targeting the stem cellsa source of the regenerative and drug resistance capacity of cancerssince they were identified near the … Continue reading

Why Nigeria Needs To Key Into Biotechnology Global Evolution | – Leadership Newspapers

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

A report recently published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) says a total of 8.1 million people are currently facing acute food insecurity in Nigeria. According to the report, the food crisis, which represents 9 percent of the population, may further deteriorate to 8.7 million in the next lean period of June-August 2017. It adds that the number of severely food-insecure people may rise to 11 million, as over 2 million people may likely fall into emergency situation, while another 121,000 is prone to famine. With the current population of over 180 million people, famine, malnutrition and hunger are staring the nation in the face. All these emergency situations are closely linked with the inability to produce enough food to feed the people, which make it obvious that the conventional method of agriculture is not working for us. Agricultural biotechnology has been suggested as one of the tools that can contribute to solving the food production deficit in the country and has taken concrete steps to entrench biotechnology in agricultural production. This is because Nigeria, like most African countries, may face two daunting challenges in the 21st century: how to feed its growing population and secondly how … Continue reading

The poetry of biology – The Navhind Times

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

The DD Kosambi Festival of Ideas has always got speakers who manage to activate the thinking capacity of a human being in a totally new dimension, and this years speakers are no different. The speaker on February 14 at Kala Academy, Panaji, was Shubha Tole, Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Her topic interestingly titled Wiring Up the Brain: Jab Yuvraj Singh ne Stuart Broad ke bowling pe che chakke mare, tab unke dimaag mein kya chal raha tha? was nothing to do with cricket and a lot to do with the functioning of the brain. The developmental neuroscientist said that the brain is a computer programmed to build us up. We grow from simple to complex from a single cell to a fully grown living being, said Tole. Her talk was interspersed with humour and experiments. She pointed out that the purpose of life is to procreate and bring new life. What is the purpose of an egg? It is to create more eggs. The main purpose of every living being is to ensure the survival of the species, she said adding that thus science gives us an ultimate exercise in humility. The lesson … Continue reading

Biological experiments become transparent anywhere, any time – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

February 14, 2017 Biological experiments are generating increasingly large and complex sets of data. This has made it difficult to reproduce experiments at other research laboratories in order to confirm or refute the results. The difficulty lies not only in the complexity of the data, but also in the elaborate computer programmes and systems needed to analyse them. Scientists from the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg have now developed a new bioinformatics tool that will make the analysis of biological and biomedical experiments more transparent and reproducible. The tool was developed under the direction of Prof. Paul Wilmes, head of the LCSB group Eco-Systems Biology, in close cooperation with the LCSB Bioinformatics Core. A paper describing the tool has been published in the highly ranked open access journal Genome Biology. The new bioinformatics tool, called IMP, is also available to researchers online (r3lab.uni.lu/web/imp/). Biological and biomedical research is being inundated with a flood of data as new studies delve into increasingly complex subjects like the entire microbiome of the gut using faster automated techniques allowing so-called high-throughput experiments. Experiments that not long ago had to be carried out laboriously by hand can now be … Continue reading
