Biological experiments become transparent anywhere, any time – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

February 14, 2017 Biological experiments are generating increasingly large and complex sets of data. This has made it difficult to reproduce experiments at other research laboratories in order to confirm or refute the results. The difficulty lies not only in the complexity of the data, but also in the elaborate computer programmes and systems needed to analyse them. Scientists from the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg have now developed a new bioinformatics tool that will make the analysis of biological and biomedical experiments more transparent and reproducible. The tool was developed under the direction of Prof. Paul Wilmes, head of the LCSB group Eco-Systems Biology, in close cooperation with the LCSB Bioinformatics Core. A paper describing the tool has been published in the highly ranked open access journal Genome Biology. The new bioinformatics tool, called IMP, is also available to researchers online (r3lab.uni.lu/web/imp/). Biological and biomedical research is being inundated with a flood of data as new studies delve into increasingly complex subjects like the entire microbiome of the gut using faster automated techniques allowing so-called high-throughput experiments. Experiments that not long ago had to be carried out laboriously by hand can now be … Continue reading

Now You Can ‘Build Your Own’ Bio-Bot – I-Connect007

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

For the past several years, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been developing a class of walking "bio-bots" powered by muscle cells and controlled with electrical and optical pulses. Now, Bioengineering Professor Rashid Bashirs research group is sharing the recipe for the current generation of bio-bots. Their how-to paper is the cover article in Nature Protocols. Schematic of a bio-bot: Engineered skeletal muscle tissue is coupled to a 3D printed flexible skeleton. Optical stimulation of the muscle tissue, which is genetically engineered to contract in response to blue light, makes the bio-bot walk across a surface in the direction of the light. The protocol teaches every step of building a bio-bot, from 3D printing the skeleton to tissue engineering the skeletal muscle actuator, including manufacturers and part numbers for every single thing we use in the lab, explained Ritu Raman, now a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Bioengineering and first author of the paper, A modular approach to the design, fabrication, and characterization of muscle-powered biological machines. This protocol is essentially intended to be a one-stop reference for any scientist around the world who wants to replicate the results we showed in our PNAS 2016 and … Continue reading

Katherine Heigl is only one of the elements of 'Grey's Anatomy' the creators of 'Doubt' brought to CBS legal drama – Los Angeles Times

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

When Greys Anatomy" executive producers Joan Rater and Tony Phelanleft the ABC medical soap to launch their own legal drama, they knew there was at least one aspect of the former series that they wanted to carry over to the new one: the sense of never knowing who is going to come through the door. Doubt, the new CBS procedural from the wife-and-husband team, is set in a New York boutique law firm that takes on risky social justice cases. Like in 'Grey's, you never know who will come in needing help, Phelan said. We wanted a show about people who were from various socioeconomic backgrounds. That was really important to us. The series, which premieres Wednesday, stars Katherine Heigl as Sadie Ellis, a defense attorneywho becomespersonally involved with her latest case and client, played by Steven Pasquale (Rescue Me). The cast is rounded out by Elliott Gould, the chief of the law firm, and Laverne Cox, Dule Hill, Dreama Walker and Kobi Libii, all of whom play lawyers. Cox, it merits noting, is the first-ever transgender actor to play a transgender character in a series regular role on broadcast TV. Doubt is somewhat inspired by ABCs late 90s-early 00s legal … Continue reading

Anatomy class teaches several lessons – Seguin Gazette: Editorials – Seguin Gazette-Enterprise

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

Recently, a group of high school students, under the direction of anatomy teacher Daniel Sanchez visited Vogel Elementary and taught all of the second grade students a little lesson. The subject a human cell. While this may seem a little outside the younger students realm of understanding, the teens delivered the lesson in a way the youngsters could understand. Prior to the visit, Sanchez, wanted to make sure his students understood the lesson and tasked them with writing a childrens story. By using the terminology and definitions, his students received an easier way to remember what they have learned. What he didnt expect to happen was to see that lesson evolve beyond his classroom, and spill over into the elementary classroom. As Sanchez students read their stories to the second graders, the children eagerly listened and then asked questions. They also got to see what a human cell looks like thanks to the models the teens also created for their class, unknowing that it would become a prop for this special session. Not only did the high school students learn, but they taught their younger counterparts, solidifying what they learned. They became role models for the younger students, and helped … Continue reading

IBB: Merck Joins The Drug Pricing Coalition For Transparency – Seeking Alpha

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

Introduction Although the political uncertainty has abated, Donald Trump has been able to single handily influence the movement of specific stocks [i.e. Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT), Ford (NYSE:F), Boeing (NYSE:BA) and others] and sectors (i.e. automotive, biotechnology, defense and healthcare). The overall healthcare sector has become volatile on the heels of any statement or tweet from Donald Trump. Case in point, Trump recently held a press conference and stated his stance with regard to the pharmaceutical industry and more specifically drug pricing. Trump stated that drug companies are "getting away with murder" when speaking to the drug pricing issue that has taken the spotlight. These remarks immediately resulted in a broad sell-off across the entire biotech cohort. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (NASDAQ:IBB) shed more than 2.5% or $7 per share as these comments were heard during the live broadcast. The healthcare sector has been faced with a political backdrop that's put the entire industry on edge. The overall healthcare umbrella has become sensitive to any tweet from President Trump as he vows to bring down drug prices. As he pursues his agenda against drug pricing, much of these threats may have already been priced-in as seen in many healthcare related … Continue reading

Debate erupts over plan to create another online destination for biology preprints – Science Magazine

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

Publishing their papers in journals, such as these lining a library's shelves, is still the goal of most biologists, but more and more are depositing early versions, or preprints, in online repositories. Sergei25/shutterstock By John TravisFeb. 13, 2017 , 4:45 PM A plan to create a new repository for biomedical and biology preprints has earned the endorsement of nearly a dozen major science funders, including government agencies, major foundations, and research charities. But it also has sparked a debate about whether an existing preprint repository, bioRxiv.org, should be the natural home for such material. Although it has no confirmed funding for the effort, the nonprofit group ASAPbio today announced a request for applications to build what it calls a Central Service for preprints (papers that have not yet been accepted by a journal or undergone peer review). Together with the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the European Research Council, the United Kingdoms Medical Research Council, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Wellcome Trust research charities, and other science funders, ASAPbio released a consensus set of principles and requirements for the proposed repository. For example, the repository must have a scientist-led independent governing board, the groups say, and be free for … Continue reading

NDSU provides memorial journals for classmates of two biology students killed in crash – INFORUM

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

The NDSU department they were studying under is giving their classmates a way to deal with their grief. Danie Thomssen, 18, was from Bismarck, and Carson Roney, 19, was from Oakes. They met through Roney's high school friend Haley Visto, who was Thomssen's roommate at NDSU. For the next few days in Room 218 of Stevens Hall, the NDSU's biological sciences department will provide journals so students can write their condolences or share memories of Thomssen and Roney. The journals will go to the families of the teenagers. "Our hope was to provide a way for the campus community to grieve together," the head of the department said in a statement. Thomssen was driving Saturday when she lost control of her car on an icy patch of Interstate 94 just east of Moorhead and slid into a guardrail, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Visto was also injured in the crash and was still hospitalized Monday, but she is expected to survive, troopers said Sunday. Biology Professor Publishes Science Fiction Novel – Hendrix College Events and News

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

CONWAY, Ark. (February 13, 2017) Hendrix College biology professor Dr. Matthew D. Moran recently published The Stars of Eridani , his first science fiction novel. It is my first attempt at a fictional book, said Moran. My goal was to write a story of humans expanding into the galaxy but without impossible technologies (like warp drive). So I tried to write a hard science fiction story that would be plausible in the future. I also have a focus on the biology of the world they are trying colonize and how it would conflict with our biology, which I believe will actually be the biggest challenge to this endeavor, Moran added. And of course, like any good science fiction, the story is symbolic of the current human condition, in particular, what we are doing to our planet. Morans favorite science fiction author is Isaac Asimov, and he is a fan of the authors The Foundation series. Asimov argued that humans will be human regardless of our technological advances and will continue to have the same social issues and conflicts, Moran said.I am also a fan of Joe Haldeman, especially the book Forever War, which I think is just beautifully written, and I am … Continue reading
