John Oliver Details the Anatomy of Trump's Falsehoods – Newsweek

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

John Oliver used the first episode of the new season of Last Week Tonight to dissect what he sees as Donald Trump's aversion to facts. Pointing out that the president "has made it clear that reality is not important to him" is nothing new; media outlets do it all the time. But Oliver wanted to delve a little deeper into the anatomy of Trump's grand pronouncementsthat are not supported by evidenceabout such things as the size of his inauguration crowd, voter fraud, the unemployment rate, the national GDP, the murder rate. Policy is being made based on such false information, and, as Oliver points out, people are getting hurt because of it. Related: John Oliver says he is concerned about being able to stay in America Politifact found that 25.2 percent of the statements made by President Barack Obama were false by some measure. For Trump, the number is 69.9 percent. Where do Trump's falsehoods come from? Try Newsweek for only $1.25 per week Oliver says Trump's worldview is reinforced primarily by cable newsor questionable websites like Breitbart or Infowars. The anatomy of an energy crisis a pictorial guide – RenewEconomy

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

What energy crisis? Who could forget the energy crises that affected electricity supply across south-eastern Australia last year. Firstly the Tasmanian crisis, following the Basslink outage in December 2015. With hydro storage dams at record lows following a drought on the back of aggressive storage withdrawals during the carbon tax years, Tasmania enforced drastic measures to ensure supply. Thankfully, flooding winter rains, together with the eventual restoration of Basslink in June helped resuscitate the apple isles energy supply. Tasmanias hydro storages now stand at around 40% of full capacity, more than double at the same time last year. Tasmanian hydropower storage capacity shows a strong seasonal trend, filling in winter rains, and drawing down during the summer and early autumn. Exchanges with Victoria via Basslink help provide security of supply, that was compromised by the outage in December 2015, when storages were already dangerously low on the back of the drought conditions in 2015 and aggressive draw down of storages during the Carbon-tax years to capitilise on the higher mainland spot prices. July saw the first of the sequence of crises in South Australia that followed from, and were in many eyes, attributable to the closure of its last coal-fired … Continue reading

Archant A Portishead family needs to raise 26,500 for pioneering treatment which could ensure their nine-year-old son can enjoy the best life possible. Email this article to a friend To send a link to this page you must be logged in. Josh Walters was born 11-and-a-half weeks premature and while he was still an infant, doctors realised he had cerebral palsy (spastic diplegia) which affects mobility. The NHS has offered a life-changing procedure to more than 100 people with a condition like Joshs, but is refusing to pay for his operation, leaving his family to call on it to make a pragmatic decision. The surgery would immensely improve Joshs quality of life, potentially for the next 70 or 80 years of his life, and in his fathers own words would reduce Joshs need for public healthcare in the future. Joshs early days were spent in Southmead Hospitals intensive care unit but he was released home with his parents, although needed extra oxygen. Josh was a little slower at starting to walk, but not significantly for any underlying issues to be apparent. However his father Andy Walters said: … Continue reading

Researchers see RI stroke victim as pioneer in brain injury treatment – The Providence Journal

Posted: Published on February 13th, 2017

Maggie Worthen suffered a stroke at 22, and was seemingly in a vegetative state. But before she died in 2015, she showed more awareness than doctors thought, pointing to new treatments for brain-injured patients. PROVIDENCE, R.I. Maggie Worthen never imagined that the title of science pioneer would be hers. A senior at Smith College, where she majored in Spanish, she hoped to become a veterinarian. A week before graduation, the 22-year-old suffered a massive stroke. It was 2006. Maggie now required around-the-clock care. The location of her stroke was in the brain stem, says her mother, Nancy Worthen. She couldnt move. She couldnt speak. She couldnt communicate in any way. She looked vegetative. A series of hospitalizations and stays at rehabilitation centers and nursing homes followed for the young woman, disabled by something so rare for someone so young. Most of the health professionals involved in her care believed that Maggie existed in a persistent vegetative state, from which she could never emerge. The state is characterized by loss of motor and cognitive function, although victims can open their eyes expressionlessly. She looked vegetative, Nancy says. But I felt right from the beginning and others as well, her father, her … Continue reading
