Brain cells, beware: Researchers have created the world smallest hammer – Digital Trends

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2017

Why it matters to you By smashing brain cells, researchers can better understand and someday treat brain conditions such as Alzheimers and TBI. The worlds smallest hammer has been created to study what happens to brain cells when we hit our head. The goal for the University of California, Santa Barbara researchers behind the project is to uncover the physical underpinnings of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in order to develop better treatment methods. This is new territory, Kimberly Foster, one of the principal investigatorsleading the project, told Digital Trends. We are not yet sure of what we will find! This is what makes this science so interesting and exciting. Along with Megan Valentine, Adele Doyle, and research student Luke Patterson, Foster will study how impact affects neural stem cells. But cells are small and the researchers needed a cellular-scale device to test and measure the damage, so they developed a tiny hammer. More:Innovative brain-reading cap allows locked-in patients to communicate with doctors The microhammer is a silicon micromechanical device, known as MEMS, Foster explained. The hammer is deployed using a magnetic force. It was fabricated in a cleanroom utilizing tools similar to those used to make microprocessor chips. Foster and … Continue reading

Testosterone Replacement Therapy Market: By Therapies & Region … – Business Wire (press release)

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2017

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Testosterone Replacement Therapy Market: By Therapies (Injections, Pallets, Gels, Patches) & By Region (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific)-Forecast (2016-2021)" report to their offering. Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), also known as Androgen replacement therapy (ART), is a class of hormone replacement therapy in which androgens, often testosterone, are replaced to treat conditions in which the testes do not produce enough testosterone due to absence, injury, or disease. Testosterone deficiency amongst men above the age of 30 years is becoming a common problem nowadays due to life style changes and is characterized by fewer erections, fatigue, thinning skin, declining muscle mass and strength, more body fat. Globally increasing population with testosterone deficiency is expected to remain key growth driver during the period of study. However, side effects of the testosterone replacement therapies are expected to be a key challenge for the industry players during the same time. Geographically, North America dominates the testosterone replacement therapy market driven by best in class infrastructure, easy access to healthcare, higher awareness about the disease amongst citizens as well as practitioners, and higher spending by the citizens towards healthcare expenditure. North America was followed by Europe and … Continue reading

SEQUEIRA: Stem cell research must remain in foreground – University of Virginia The Cavalier Daily

OPINION Where will studies fall in the Trump administrations line of immediacy? by Sean Sequeira | Feb 09 2017 | 13 hours ago | Updated 14 hours ago As President Trumps cabinet ossifies into its final form, several Americans predict that many policy consistencies of the past are now at risk. One place of consistency is the landscape of stem cell research. The impacts Trumps administration might have on biomedical science are still uncertain. Indeed, some cabinet appointments have incited fear in Americans who rely on stem cell therapy or perform research or work at institutions where stem cell research is a vital component of grants and general revenue. While uniformly and staunchly conservative, the Trump administration must ensure continuity within stem cell research not only to protect jobs and research institutions from bankruptcy, but to also preserve a therapy that might actually be a panacea for a range of maladies. Stem cells, while controversial and ethically precarious to the public, should be researched and ultimately implemented as a therapeutic solution for patients that simply have no alternative. Specifically, stem cells opponents are against embryonic stem cells, which no longer account for the majority of stem cell research. Currently, the … Continue reading

The Woman Behind a Secret Grey's Anatomy Experiment – WNYC

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2017

In 2006, editors from Newsweek magazine picked this picture for the front of an issue on the 25th anniversary of AIDS. The woman, Jennifer Jako, was HIV positive and 6 months pregnant. (Ethan Hill ) Feb 8, 2017 by Kenny Malone About nine years ago, 17.5 million people tuned into an episode of Greys Anatomy that, on the surface, appeared like any other high-stakes surgery, high-drama love triangles. What those millions of Greys viewers didnt know was that they were guinea pigs for a massive, secret experiment. That experiment was arguably a referendum about a single woman: Jennifer Jako, and her decision to become a mother. In 1991, at the age of 18, Jako had a one night stand with a high-school friend. It was the only time shed ever had sex without a condom. She contracted HIV and spent years trying to debunk misconceptions: producing a documentary that aired on MTV, speaking at college campuses and on talk shows. Over time, the countrys view of HIV evolved. As people started living longer, stigma decreased. People generally understood that the infection wasnt a death sentence any longer. But there was one area people couldnt seem to understand: Pregnancy. Studies showed … Continue reading

Anatomy of an Ad: Tide's Super Bowl Stain – AdAge.com

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2017

Ambitious doesn't quite fully describe Tide's gameplan for Super Bowl LI. Marketing executives for the Procter & Gamble brand made it clear they would rather not run a big game ad if the creative wasn't worthy of Tide's Super Bowl heritage. This year, live commercials are dominating the pre-game buzz but Tide, in partnership with Saatchi and Saatchi, Traktor and The Mill went a completely different and costly route. Instead of simply advertising in the game, Tide became part of the broadcast, with a little help from Fox Sports announcers Curt Menefee and Terry Bradshaw -- and a bottle of barbeque sauce. In part one of Anatomy of an Ad: The Stain below, we look at the idea behind Tide's big gambit in the big game. The goal: to trick an audience of over 100 million into believing Mr. Bradshaw's stain is happening in real time, that his anxiety is genuine and that Tide is there to clean up the mess. The idea is one thing. The execution is quite another. Just three weeks before the game, P&G and its army of producers, gaffers and grips descended on El Camino Community College in Torrance, Calif. to turn it into a … Continue reading

How to Treat Ulcerative Colitis with Diet – Care2.com

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2017

The rotten egg gas, hydrogen sulfide, is one of the main malodorous compounds in human flatusin other words, one of the main reasons farts can smell so badbut the larger concern is that it may be responsible for relapses of inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. In my video below,I talk about the role animal protein may play in the development of these diseases, thought to be because of putrefying animal protein gas. But what if you already have ulcerative colitis? Can cutting down on sulfur-containing amino acids help? Previously, the only dietary intervention shown to help at all was the withdrawal of milk. Case reports going back decades described patients with ulcerative colitis whose flares appeared to be triggered by cows milk. The elimination of all dairy products from the diet was reported to frequently result in a dramatic improvement in symptoms. But, when milk was reintroduced back into patients diets, it could trigger an attack. The role of milk wasnt formally studied though, until 1965. Was it just a small group of patients who were allergic? Or, could a milk-free diet help with this disease in general? Researchers randomized patients presenting with an attack of ulcerative colitis … Continue reading
