CCFA: Colitis Diagnosis | Ulcerative Colitis Tests

Posted: Published on December 13th, 2016

Your doctor will make a diagnosis based on your medical history, a physical examination, and a series of tests. The first goal of these tests is to differentiate ulcerative colitis from infectious causes of diarrhea. Following this, the patient generally undergoes an evaluation of the colon, using one of two tests -- a sigmoidoscopy or total colonoscopy. In addition to making the initial diagnosis, the tests your doctor performs will also help determine which type of Ulcerative Colitis you have. Each type has its own specific symptoms and associated complications. Learn more about the different Types of Colitis. Your doctor will conduct a physical exam of your body and interview you to learn more about your general health, diet, family history, and environment. Early steps in the diagnostic process can include laboratory tests of blood and fecal matter. Stool specimens are analyzed to eliminate the possibility of bacterial, viral, or parasitic causes of diarrhea. Blood tests can check for signs of infection as well as for anemia, which may indicate bleeding in the colon or rectum. Your doctor may recommend endoscopy, which is the use of medical instruments to visually examine the interior of your colon with a lighted tube … Continue reading

Induced pluripotent stem cell – Wikipedia

Posted: Published on December 13th, 2016

Induced pluripotent stem cells (also known as iPS cells or iPSCs) are a type of pluripotent stem cell that can be generated directly from adult cells. The iPSC technology was pioneered by Shinya Yamanakas lab in Kyoto, Japan, who showed in 2006 that the introduction of four specific genes encoding transcription factors could convert adult cells into pluripotent stem cells.[1] He was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize along with Sir John Gurdon "for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent." [2] Pluripotent stem cells hold great promise in the field of regenerative medicine. Because they can propagate indefinitely, as well as give rise to every other cell type in the body (such as neurons, heart, pancreatic, and liver cells), they represent a single source of cells that could be used to replace those lost to damage or disease. The most well-known type of pluripotent stem cell is the embryonic stem cell. However, since the generation of embryonic stem cells involves destruction (or at least manipulation) [3] of the pre-implantation stage embryo, there has been much controversy surrounding their use. Further, because embryonic stem cells can only be derived from embryos, it has so far not been … Continue reading

Why Is There Mucus In My Stools – Ulcerative Colitis

Posted: Published on December 12th, 2016

Mucus In My Stools: What can be more annoying than looking into the toilet when you are in the middle of ulcerative colitis symptoms and seeing something that is unfamiliar? mucus on a stool in the toilet bowl How often should people be examining their stools or poops if you want to call them that anyways? It seems that for everyone with ulcerative colitis, what ends up in the toilet bowl is almost the most exciting or sometimes depressing part of the day. How strange is that. Yet again, I threw myself back into denial, and just avoided thinking about what this strange slimmy mucus stuff was. I had no idea why it was attached to almost every crap that landed in the toilet bowel, and I really was worried that something was wrong inside of me. Mucus is simply a secretion that comes from many different parts of the body. It is not limited to the intestines, but rather it can be found on the inner lining walls of the stomach as well as other organs of the body. It is not something to be worried about most of the time. The job of mucus is to protect and … Continue reading

Could gene therapy become biotechs growth driver in 2017 …

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2016

Despite bouncing off a 2-year low, biotech is still an unpopular sector and investors are rightfully concerned about its near-term prospects. Recent drug failures, growing pricing pressure and the potential impact of biosimilars all contribute to the negative sentiment, but the main problem is the lack of growth drivers for the remainder of 2016 (and potentially 2017). The biotech industry relies on innovation cycles to create new revenue sources. This was the case in the 2013-2014 biotech bull market, which was driven by a wave of medical breakthroughs (PD-1, HCV, CAR/TCR, oral MS drugs, CF etc.). These waves typically involve new therapeutic approaches coupled with disruptive technologies as their enablers. In oncology, for example, the understanding that cancer is driven by aberrant signaling coupled with advances in medicinal chemistry and antibody engineering led to the development of kinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies as blockers of signaling. A decade later, insights around cancer immunology gave rise to the immuno-oncology field and PD-1 inhibitors in particular, which are expected to become the biggest oncology franchise ever. Gene therapy ticks all the boxes While there are several hot areas in biotech such as gene editing and microbiome, most are still early and their … Continue reading

Cervical Spine Chapter – Spinal Nerves Surgery Fairfax

Posted: Published on December 7th, 2016

Normal Anatomy There are 33 bones that make up the spinal column. There are 7 bones in the neck (cervical spine), 12 in the trunk (thoracic spine), 5 in the low back (lumbar spine), 5 fused bones that attach the spine to the pelvis (sacrum) and 3 fused bones form the tail bone (coccyx). The cervical spine three two main functions: The spinal cord is attached to the brain and is similar to a large electrical cable. It conducts information between the brain and the arms and legs. Approximately 60 smaller nerves exit the spinal cord (30 to the right and 30 to the left) along its path from top (base of the brain) to bottom (the spinal cord generally ends at the disc between the first and second lumbar vertebrae). Each nerve exits from a hole that is formed where two vertebrae meet (called the neural foramen) and is thus named (eg the nerve that exits adjacent to the 5th cervical bone is called the C5 nerve root). These nerve roots go to different parts of the body (arms, trunk, legs, bowel and bladder) and transmit information to and from those regions (eg the C5 nerve root carries sensation … Continue reading

Hydrocephalus – Wikipedia

Posted: Published on December 7th, 2016

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain.[1] This typically causes increased pressure inside the skull. Older people may have headaches, double vision, poor balance, urinary incontinence, personality changes, or mental impairment. In babies there may be a rapid increase in head size. Other symptoms may include vomiting, sleepiness, seizures, and downward pointing of the eyes.[1] Hydrocephalus can occur due to birth defects or be acquired later in life.[1] Associated birth defects include neural tube defects and those that result in aqueductal stenosis.[1][2] Other causes include meningitis, brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, intraventricular hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. There are four types of hydrocephalus: communicating, non-communicating, ex-vacuo, and normal pressure. Diagnosis is typically by examination and medical imaging.[1] Hydrocephalus is typically treated by the surgical placement of a shunt system. A procedure called a third ventriculostomy may be an option in a few people. Complications from shunts may include overdrainage, underdrainage, mechanical failure, infection, or obstruction. This may require replacement. Outcomes are variable; however, many live normal lives. Without treatment death may occur.[1] About one to two per 1,000 newborns have hydrocephalus.[1][3] Rates in the developing world may be more.[4] Normal … Continue reading
