A clinical question needs to be directly relevant to the patient or problem at hand and phrased in such a way as to facilitate the search for an answer. PICO makes this process easier. It is a mnemonic for the important parts of a well-built clinical question. It also helps formulate the search strategy by identifying the key concepts that need to be in the article that can answer the question. PICO or PICOTT: PATIENT OR PROBLEM How would you describe a group of patients similar to yours? What are the most important characteristics of the patient? INTERVENTION, EXPOSURE, PROGNOSTIC FACTOR What main intervention are you considering? What do you want to do with this patient? COMPARISON What is the main alternative being considered, if any? OUTCOME What are you trying to accomplish, measure, improve or affect? Cerebral palsy treatment in India|Stem cell therapy for CP …

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

Cerebral Palsy Cerebral palsy is a broad term used to describe a group of non progressive "chronic palsies" impairing control over movements due to brain damage. Children with CP are most likely born with the condition, but some may acquire later during a first 3-5 years of child's life. The disorder is generally associated with the secondary conditions such as difficulty eating, bladder/bowel problems, seizures and learning disabilities; which can get better or worse over time. CP is often associated with abnormal brain development or damage to some parts of the brain may be due to poor oxygen supply or internal bleeding. Though it is difficult to pinpoint exact cause, the primary Cerebral palsy causes may be genetic abnormalities, congenital brain malformation, maternal infections or fever etc. This damage to brain cannot be reversed with the current treatments available. For the children with CP who struggling for the normal life style; stem cells technology has come up as the new ray of hope. Apart from tendency to give rise to healthy neurons; these stem cells also has a unique ability to identify and home in the affected area. These cells are also responsible for creation of microenvironment and secretion of … Continue reading

For a Free Preview($275 value) of Stem Cell Fellowship Module 1 , click here Regenerative medicine is an emerging branch of medicine with the goal of restoring organ and/or tissue function for patients with serious injuries or chronic disease in which the bodies own responses are not sufficient enough to restore functional tissue. A growing crisis in organ transplantation and an aging population have driven a search for new and alternative therapies. There are approximately 90,000 patients in the US transplant-waiting list. In addition there are a wide array of major unmet medical needs which might be addressed by regenerative technologies. New and current Regenerative Medicines can use stem cells to create living and functional tissues to regenerate and repair tissue and organs in the body that are damaged due to age, disease and congenital defects. Stem cells have the power to go to these damaged areas and regenerate new cells and tissues by performing a repair and a renewal process, restoring functionality. Regenerative medicine has the potential to provide a cure to failing or impaired tissues. While some believe the therapeutic potential of stem cells has been overstated, an analysis of the potential benefits of stem cells based therapies … Continue reading

Overview of Stem Cell Therapy

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

By: Ian Murnaghan BSc (hons), MSc - Updated: 24 Dec 2015 | *Discuss With the wealth of information available on stem cell therapy, it can be overwhelming to read through what is often complex and confusing material. A quick fact sheet on stem cell therapy is a good way to familiarise yourself with the subject and decide if further reading is of interest or benefit. Finally, there are additional issues even when cells are identified, isolated and grown. The new cells require implantation in a person and they must then essentially learn how to effectively function alongside a person's own tissues. For instance, if you imagine a cardiac cell being implanted, think about the fact that it may not beat with the same rhythm of a person's heart cells and is thus ineffective. A person's immune system may also recognise the transplanted cells as foreign bodies and this can trigger an immune reaction that results in rejection of the new cells. The potential of stem cell therapy to ease human suffering and dramatically affect disease has motivated scientists to research ways of enhancing current stem cell therapies and develop new ones. Stem cell therapy remains a new science but the … Continue reading

Spinal Cord Injury Damage to the spinal cord usually results in impairments or loss of muscle movement, muscle control, sensation and body system control. Presently, post-accident care for spinal cord injury patients focuses on extensive physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other rehabilitation therapies; teaching the injured person how to cope with their disability. A number of published papers and case studies support the feasibility of treating spinal cord injury with allogeneic human umbilical cord tissue-derived stem cells and autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells. Feasibility of combination allogeneic stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury: a case report co-authored by Stem Cell Institute Founder Dr. Neil Riordan references many of them. Published improvements include improved ASIA scores, improved bladder and/or bowel function, recovered sexual function, and increased muscle control. The adult stem cells used to treat spinal cord injuries at the Stem Cell Institute come from two sources: the patients own bone marrow (autologous mesenchymal and CD34+) and human umbilical cord tissue(allogeneic mesenchymal). Umbilical cords are donated by mothers after normal, healthy births. A licensed anesthesiologist harvests bone marrow from both hips under light general anesthesia in a hospital operating room. This procedure takes about 1 1/2 2 hours. Before they … Continue reading

Stem Cells from Fat: Cells with Potential Schedule appointment or Skype information We now know that fat tissue is the bodys most important reserve of vital cells, including stem cells and so-called progenitor cells. Since its foundation in 1994 body fat and its potential are in the focus in Clinic DDr.Heinrich. The regenerative effects documented in many studies suggest therapeutic applications in orthopaedics and other areas of medicine. These findings are not new: Over the course of many years, practitioners of veterinary medicine have made positive experiences in the therapeutic use of autologous stem cells for thousands of dogs and racehorses. Stem cells extracted from the animals autologous fat appear to be suited for the regeneration of damaged joints, bones and cartilages. Furthermore, they are administered with the goal of general regeneration and increasing performance. Centers worldwide are now also carrying out therapy with adult stem cells from autologous fat on humans. Due to the enormous potential for success and possible huge benefits, Clinic DDr.Heinrich is now offering regenerative stem cell therapy. Ulcerative Colitis. Diarrhoea with rectal bleeding; colitis | Patient

Understanding the gut The gut (gastrointestinal tract) is the long tube that starts at the mouth and ends at the back passage (anus). Food passes down the gullet (oesophagus) into the stomach and then into the small intestine. The small intestine has three sections - the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The small intestine is where food is digested and taken up (absorbed) into the bloodstream. The structure of the gut then changes to become the colon and rectum ( the large intestine), sometimes called the large bowel. The colon absorbs water and contains food that has not been digested, such as fibre. This is passed into the last part of the large intestine where it is stored as stools (faeces). Stools are then passed out of the anus into the toilet. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a disease of the colon and the rectum (the large intestine). The inflammation and ulcers in the large intestine cause the common symptoms of diarrhoea and passing blood and mucus. When doctors talk of inflammatory bowel disease, they usually mean people who either have UC or Crohn's disease. Both of these conditions can cause inflammation of the colon and the rectum (large intestine) with similar … Continue reading

WHAT IS PARKINSON'S DISEASE? (L. Paralysis agitans) Discovered by James Parkinson in 1817, Parkinson's disease has been previously identified many thousands of years ago in ancient Ayurvedic texts as Kampavata (Kampa: tremor; Vata: the bodily humor governing movement). The Caraka Samhita, the most ancient and authoritative textbook of Ayurveda, gives the following description of the symptoms of Kampavata (Parkinson's): 'Tremors of hands and feet; difficulty with body movements'. Various signs and symptoms currently associated with the disease such as akinesia, drooling, reptilian stare, tremor, constant somnolence, rigidity and dementia are also described in the Caraka Samhita. Ayurveda operates on the principle of achieving balance amongst the 3 main doshas, or humors of the body, Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata governs all air and movement in the body. Ayurveda explains that the cause of Parkinson's disease, a disorder caused by imbalance of the Vata dosha, is the presence of aggravated air in the brain. This aggravated air is formed as a result of poor digestion leading to disturbance of the stomach, and the stomach then sends aggravated, unhealthy air to the brain. Over time the aggravated air attacks and corrodes the area of the brain that controls involuntary movements. This corrosive … Continue reading

What is Eczema? Eczema (pronounced as 'EK-zeh-ma') comes from two Greek words, 'ek' meaning out and 'zema' meaning boils. Basically eczema, which is also called dermatitis, is a medical condition wherein the skin swells. The discomfort and pain arising from the small blisters of the skin makes it feel as if it is boiling. Both children and adults may contract eczema, but it usually occurs in infants.
