Hormone replacement therapy (male-to-female) – Susan’s Place …

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

Editor's Note: While discussion of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and its medications is permitted, discussing the means to acquire them without a prescription, and self medication without a doctors care is prohibited. We cannot in good conscience condone the self administering of these medications. Not only may self medication be illegal there can also be serious health consequences resulting from the taking of these medicines. See a qualified medical professional before taking any prescription drugs. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for transgender and transsexual people replaces the hormones naturally occurring in their bodies with those of the other sex. Some intersex people also receive HRT, either starting in childhood to confirm the gender they were assigned, or later, if this assignment has proven to be incorrect. Some cisgendered men may use HRT to have a hair-free body, as a result of less testosterone in their body. Its purpose is to cause the development of the secondary sex characteristics of the desired gender. It can not undo the changes produced by the first natural occurring puberty, which necessitates sexual reassignment surgery and epilation by either electrolysis and/or laser hair removal. This is due to being easier to produce secondary male sexual characteristics … Continue reading

Spinal Cord Injury – Brain and Spinal

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

Spinal cord injuries are caused when delicate spinal cord tissue is bruised, torn, or crushed. Spinal cord injuries can be caused by accidents, but can also be caused by diseases or disorders. Types of Spinal Cord Injury | Complete (Traumatic) |Incomplete (non-traumatic) As many as 400,000 Americans are living with spinal cord injuries. Most spinal cord injuries occur between the ages of 16 and 30, and about 82 percent of those who experience spinal cord injuries are male. Motor vehicle accidents account for approximately 44 percent of all spinal cord injuries. Other common causes include: After the spinal cord has been injured, messages no longer flow through the damaged area, essentially cutting off information between the brain and certain parts of the body. Generally, the functions of the body located above the point of injury will continue to work with no loss of function, while the areas of the body located below the point of injury will be impaired. Impairment can include the following: Doctors and specialists use the level of injury to most accurately predict which parts of the body are most likely to be affected by loss of movement and sensation. Complete injuries will result in total loss … Continue reading

Scientists discover new molecules that kill cancer cells …

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

Research in mice suggests molecules could treat cervical, breast, ovarian, and lung cancers A new family of molecules that kill cancer cells and protect healthy cells could be used to treat a number of different cancers, including cervical, breast, ovarian and lung cancers. Research published in EBioMedicine shows that as well as targeting and killing cancer cells, the molecules generate a protective effect against toxic chemicals in healthy cells. Cells can become cancerous when their DNA is damaged. Many different things can cause DNA damage, including smoking, chemicals and radiation; understanding exactly what happens at the point of DNA damage can help scientists develop new cancer treatments. By studying this mechanism, researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada could identify new molecules that selectively target cancer cells. The researchers studied the process of DNA damage using a sort of molecular filming technique called femtosecond time-resolved laser spectroscopy. The technique is like a high-speed camera, which uses two pulses of light: one to start a reaction, and the other to monitor the way the molecules react. This technique let researchers watch how molecules interact in real-time, revealing how cells become cancerous. Researchers have been using femtosecond laser spectroscopy to study … Continue reading

Anoxic Brain Injury – Brain and Spinal

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

Adequate oxygen is vital for the brain. Many factors can cause the brain to receive inadequate oxygen. When oxygen levels are significantly low for four minutes or longer, brain cells begin to die and after five minutes permanent anoxic brain injury can occur. Anoxic brain injury which is also called cerebral hypoxia or hypoxic-anoxic injury (HAI) is a serious, life-threatening injury; it can cause cognitive problems and disabilities. Some HAI injuries are due to a partial lack of oxygen; the term hypoxic means partial lack. Other HAI injuries are due to a complete lack of oxygen; the term anoxic means total lack. The greater the loss of oxygen, the more wide-spread and serious the injury will be. The death of brain cells interrupts the brains electrochemical impulses and interferes with the performance of neurotransmittersthe chemical messengers which transmit messages within the brain. The neurotransmitters regulate body functions and influence behavior. For example, the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine help regulate moods, while the endorphins increase pleasure and control pain. The neurotransmitter acetylcholine plays an important role in memory. There are four types of anoxia, but each can cause the same serious damage to the brain. Usually HAI will begin with … Continue reading

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Our philosophy is to treat the whole person, not just the medical problem. We want our patients to be healthy inside and out. In order for your body to function at its full potential, it needs to produce sufficient levels of hormones. As you age, production of these hormones declines, and a wide range of symptoms can be a result: hot flashes, weight gain, lack of sexual interest just to name a few. Bio-Natural Hormone Therapy is used to bring these hormonal levels to balance. The effective use of Bio-identical Hormone Therapy for the relief of symptoms caused by age-related hormone imbalances found in women and men, can optimize and balance hormones. Hormones are essential to good health and a feeling of well-being. By providing hormones that are an exact biochemical match of your own hormones, it is possible to restore your levels back to the balance you had in your 20s and 30s. Although Bio-identical Hormone Therapy has been in use since the 1930s, many doctors and their patients are just learning of this option. Bio-Natural Hormone Therapy is in the forefront of anti-aging treatment. Many doctors are adding this therapy to their practices to … Continue reading

Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease Using the Gamma Knife

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital now offers the Gamma Knife, a noninvasive treatment for Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease (PD or, simply, Parkinson's) is the most common form of parkinsonism, a group of motor system disorders. It is a slowly progressing, degenerative disease that is usually associated with the following symptoms, all of which result from the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells: It is incorrectly believed that Parkinson's disease disappeared after the introduction of levodopa (L-dopa) in the 1960s. In fact, about 50,000 Americans are newly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease each year, with more than half a million Americans affected at any one time. Further, more people suffer from Parkinson's disease than multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis combined. The specific cause of PD is unknown, however, medical experts believe the symptoms are related to a chemical imbalance in the brain caused by brain-cell death. Parkinson's disease is chronic (persists over a long period of time) and progressive (symptoms grow worse over time). Although the disease may appear in younger patients (even teenagers), it usually affects people in late middle age. The disease affects men and women in almost equal numbers. It is not contagious, nor is it likely … Continue reading
