Stem cell transplant may help patients with MS – CBS News

Posted: Published on October 24th, 2015

An experimental treatment that uses a patient's own stem cells may offer new hope for people with multiple sclerosis. In a small clinical trial, patients experienced long-term disease remission after undergoing a transplant of their own hematopoietic stem cells. This type of cell is responsible for the formation of blood in the body and are typically derived from bone marrow. The patients also took high-dose immunosuppressive drugs. The paper, published Monday in JAMA Neurology, reports on the third year of a five-year study. A total of 24 patients with active relapsing-remitting MS were enrolled in the trial. With this type of MS, patients have points when their disease is active followed by periods when they do not experience any symptoms. Play Video Dr. Jon LaPook goes inside the trial and approval process for an experimental treatment using stem cells designed to make Multiple Sclerosis pati... The researchers found that nearly 79 percent of the patients who underwent the procedure sustained full neurologic function for the three years following the treatment and symptoms of their disease did not progress. Additionally, patients in that time period did not develop any new lesions related to their disease. More than 90 percent of patients … Continue reading

Successful Stem Cell Trachea Transplant – ABC News

Posted: Published on October 24th, 2015

Doctors in Italy announced they have used patients' own stem cells to grow trachea tissue that led to seemingly successful transplanted windpipes in two patients diagnosed with trachea cancer. Doctors regenerated tissue from the patients' nose and bone marrow stem cells to create tracheas biologically identical to the patients' original organs. Both patients underwent the transplant in early July and were released from the hospital just weeks after the surgery, according to the Associated Press. "They are back to the home, able to speak, able to socialize with everybody," Giovannini told the Associated Press. "Having this quality of life is wonderful." According to Dr. Mark Iannettoni, head of the department of cardiothoracic surgery at University of Iowa, a trachea is a fragile organ because it is mostly cartilage, which has a poor blood supply. "Once damaged, it is difficult to get it to heal correctly," said Iannettoni. Trachea cancer is resistant to chemotherapy and radiation and attempts to replace the trachea with mechanical devices have not been effective. However, Dr. Eric Lambright, surgical director of lung transplant at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said that using a patient's own stem cells not only could help to rebuild the fragile tissue, but … Continue reading

Human embryonic stem cells clinical trials – Wikipedia …

Human Embryonic Stem Cell Clinical Trials[edit] Introduction[edit] The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first clinical trial in the United States involving human embryonic stem cells on January 23, 2009. Geron Corporation, a biotechnology firm located in Menlo Park, California, originally planned to enroll ten patients suffering from spinal cord injuries to participate in the trial. The company hoped that GRNOPC1, a product derived from human embryonic stem cells, would stimulate nerve growth in patients with debilitating damage to the spinal cord.[1] The trial began in 2010 after being delayed by the FDA because cysts were found on mice injected with these cells, and safety concerns were raised.[2] In the United States, the FDA must approve all clinical trials involving newly developed pharmaceuticals. Researchers must complete an Investigational New Drug (IND) application in order to earn the FDAs approval. IND applications typically include data from animal and toxicology studies in which the drugs safety is tested, drug manufacturing information explaining how and where the drug will be produced, and a detailed research protocol stating who will be included in the study, how the drug will be administered and how participants will be consented.[3] Testing for new drugs must successfully … Continue reading

Gene therapy – PBS

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2015

A treatment for Cystic Fibrosis. A cure for AIDS. The end of cancer. That's what the newspapers promised us in the early 1990's. Gene therapy was the answer to what ailed us. Scientists had at last learned how to insert healthy genes into unhealthy people. And those healthy genes would either replace the bad genes causing diseases like CF, sickle-cell anemia and hemophilia or stimulate the body's own immune system to rid itself of HIV and some forms of cancer. A decade later, none of these treatments have come to fruition and research into gene therapy has become politically unpopular, making clinical trials hard to approve and research dollars hard to come by. But some researchers who are taking a different approach to gene therapy could be on the road to more success than ever before. - - - - - - - - - - - - Early Promise Almost as soon as Watson and Crick unwound the double helix in the 1950's, researchers began considering the possibility- and ethics- of gene therapy. The goals were lofty- to fix inherited genetic diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis and hemophilia forever. Gene therapists planned to isolate the relevant gene in question, … Continue reading

Department of Chemistry

As some of our most beloved faculty and staff retired this summer, YSU STEM wants to take the time to acknowledge those who have been exceptional. This is the second part of this two-part series, where we highlight two of our faculty as they continue on to the next chapter of their lives. This summer, professor of physical chemistry Howard Mettee retired after 47 years of service to the YSU community. I came in the fall of 1968, one year after the private Youngstown University became Youngstown State University, Dr. Mettee said. I came because there was a move at the same time to start a graduate Masters Program. For scientists like chemists, this meant educating students not only in the facts and theories of chemistry, but now conducting publishable experiments with student participation, and attempting to contribute to the growing knowledge bank of a vital science. After being on staff for about two years, faculty size doubled, with the added faculty all being required to have a Ph.D. For existing faculty, the opportunity was there for them to hone their research skills. This meant that as the newest addition to the State of Ohios network of 11 research universities, … Continue reading
