Gene Therapy and Cell Therapy Defined | ASGCT – American …

Posted: Published on October 20th, 2015

Gene therapy and cell therapy are overlapping fields of biomedical research with the goals of repairing the direct cause of genetic diseases in the DNA or cellular population, respectively. These powerful strategies are also being focused on modulating specific genes and cell subpopulations in acquired diseases in order to reestablish the normal equilibrium. In many diseases, gene and cell therapy are combined in the development of promising therapies. In addition, these two fields have helped provide reagents, concepts, and techniques that are elucidating the finer points of gene regulation, stem cell lineage, cell-cell interactions, feedback loops, amplification loops, regenerative capacity, and remodeling. Gene therapy is defined as a set of strategies that modify the expression of an individuals genes or that correct abnormal genes. Each strategy involves the administration of a specific DNA (or RNA). Cell therapy is defined as the administration of live whole cells or maturation of a specific cell population in a patient for the treatment of a disease. Gene therapy: Historically, the discovery of recombinant DNA technology in the 1970s provided the tools to efficiently develop gene therapy. Scientists used these techniques to readily manipulate viral genomes, isolate genes, identify mutations involved in human diseases, characterize … Continue reading

Ulcerative Colitis – REMICADE

Posted: Published on October 19th, 2015

UC is an ongoing disease of the colon, or large intestine. UC is known as an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)a term used to describe a number of inflammatory diseases that affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. If you have an inflammatory disorder such as UC, your immune system attacks your own GI tissue. People with UC can experience a number of signs and symptoms, including severe abdominal cramping and pain, fatigue, and the sudden, uncontrollable urge for bowel movements. But with appropriate medical treatment, many people with UC are able to achieve real symptom control. While the direct cause of UC is unknown, here's what we do know. First, you may be more likely to experience UC if it's part of your family's medical history. Second, UC symptoms begin when your immune system attacks healthy cells in your body, for reasons we do not yet understand. Normally, the immune system (the body's natural defense system) protects your body from bacteria, viruses, and other foreign agents. When you have UC, your immune system incorrectly targets your GI tract. This causes inflammationleading to the symptoms and flares usually experienced with UC. UC typically develops in people between the ages of 15 and 30. … Continue reading

Ulcerative colitis – UpToDate

Posted: Published on October 19th, 2015

ULCERATIVE COLITIS OVERVIEW Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a disease in which the lining of the colon (the large intestine) becomes inflamed and develops sores (ulcers), leading to bleeding and diarrhea. The inflammation almost always affects the rectum and lower part of the colon, but it can affect the entire colon (figure 1). Although ulcerative colitis cannot be cured, it can usually be controlled. Most people with ulcerative colitis are able to live active and productive lives. Controlling the disease usually means taking medications and seeing a healthcare provider on a regular basis. This article discusses the causes, symptoms, and treatment of ulcerative colitis. More detailed information about ulcerative colitis is available by subscription. (See "Clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and prognosis of ulcerative colitis in adults" and "Management of severe ulcerative colitis".) ULCERATIVE COLITIS CAUSES Ulcerative colitis is part of a group of conditions called inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Crohn disease is another inflammatory bowel disease, although it can affect the entire digestive tract (mouth to anus) (figure 2). Inflammatory bowel disease is NOT the same as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). (See "Patient information: Crohn disease (Beyond the Basics)" and "Patient information: Irritable bowel syndrome (Beyond the Basics)".) The cause of ulcerative … Continue reading

The Stem Cell Transplant Process – Covenant Health

Posted: Published on October 19th, 2015

Stem cell transplantis used to facilitate high-dose chemotherapy. Stem cell therapy does not fight cancer. It helps the body recover after the high-dose chemotherapy which is used to treat cancers including multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and relapsed testicular cancer. Standard chemotherapy Before high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation are used, medical oncologists administer multiple cycles of standard chemotherapy over several months. The standard chemotherapy is used to either reduce residual cancer cells or to determine if the patient will benefit from high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation. Evaluation The first step in the high-dose chemotherapy/stem cell transplant process is a thorough evaluation to determine the patient's likelihood of benefiting from the treatment. Medical records The patient's medical records are reviewed. Previous chemotherapy results, scans and other factors are considered to determine if the patient is likely to benefit from high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation. At this time the doctor will order other tests to establish whether the patient is physically able to go through the high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplant process. MUGA scan or echocardiogram These tests measure how well the patient's heart pumps blood. A MUGA (MUltiple Gated Acquisition) scan uses a radioactive substance injected … Continue reading

The Case Against Abortion: Medical Testimony

Posted: Published on October 19th, 2015

Page Summary: It is false to claim that no one knows when life begins and dishonest to argue that abortion does not kill a human being. Every new life begins at conception. This is an irrefutable fact of biology. It is true for animals and true for humans. When considered alongside the law of biogenesisthat every species reproduces after its own kindwe can draw only one conclusion in regard to abortion. No matter what the circumstances of conception, no matter how far along in the pregnancy, abortion always ends the life of an individual human being. Every honest abortion advocate concedes this simple fact. Faye Wattleton, the longest reigning president of the largest abortion provider in the United StatesPlanned Parenthoodargued as far back as 1997 that everyone already knows that abortion kills. She proclaims the following in an interview with Ms. Magazine: I think we have deluded ourselves into believing that people don't know that abortion is killing. So any pretense that abortion is not killing is a signal of our ambivalence, a signal that we cannot say yes, it kills a fetus.1 On the other side of the pond, Ann Furedi, the chief executive of the largest independent abortion … Continue reading

Cardiology – Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center

Posted: Published on October 19th, 2015

PVSEC's cardiology department provides specialty care, diagnostics, and management of all cardiac diseases in dogs and cats. In addition, the cardiology department works side by side with all the other specialty departments in helping to manage any cardiac complications that may arise as a result of non-cardiac diseases. We strongly encourage that all clinical information, such as recent radiographs, blood work, and recent medical history - including current medications and doses - be provided at or prior to the time of the appointment to expedite the diagnostic process. When complete referral information is provided, echocardiograms may be performed by the cardiologist during the appointment to allow clients to wait for completion of diagnostics. Because echocardiography is a dynamic study and image quality is operator dependent, the cardiology service is not able to interpret studies performed by other clinicians. With the exception of echocardiography, diagnostic tests are not repeated unless the patient's condition has recently changed or repeat tests are otherwise necessary to provide the best medical care possible. With the June 2014 addition to the second floor of PVSEC's hospital, the cardiology department now has more space dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions in dogs and cats. … Continue reading

What is Cardiology? (with pictures) – wiseGEEK

Posted: Published on October 19th, 2015

Cardiology is the study of cardiovascular illness, the care of all things related to the heart. It is a specialization amongst physicians. Cardiology also includes arteries and it used to diagnose and treat conditions like blockages. Cardiologists should not be confused with cardiac surgeons. Cardiac surgeons go into the chest and perform heart surgeries, while cardiologists perform tests and procedures like angioplasty. Cardiology is the discipline that researches, diagnoses and treats heart injuries and diseases as well as their causes. A cardiologist will treat your heart problem while staying aware of other conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and other factors that risk damaging the heart. Some of these risk factors include a family history of heart disease, obesity, cigarette smoking, poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Since cardiology is a specialized field of medicine, you should not necessarily rely on your regular healthcare provider to care for your heart. In fact, he or she may well be able to deal with minor problems, but will usually refer you to a specialist if the symptoms appear to be serious. In other instances, your physician may simply consult with a cardiology specialist in order to determine the best course … Continue reading
