Cell Trials

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2015

Starting from 2014, I was trying to capture results of clinical studies in cell therapy. Today, Id like to share some results of this attempt. I decided to narrow down my analysis to regenerative medicine, since most of cell-based therapies with published results belong to this category. Inclusion criteria and definitions Exclusion criteria Search strategy I set very loose filter for search of clinical studies results by using PubMed database with query stem cell. I receive notifications about new publications from this query via RSS feed. Stem cell query captures about 50-100 publications daily, 90% of clinical studies. Total number of studies and data capture Demographics A great variety of countries published results of clinical studies in 2014. The biggest number of reports came from China. US was the second biggest contributor. I summarized major contributing countries (more than 4 reports) in this figure: Cell types As one may predict, Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSC) was the major cell type (35%) in cell-based regenerative medicine clinical studies. Mobilized hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HPC-A) and bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM MNC) were another popular type of cells for tissue regeneration. Interestingly, 2 reports were about results of studies, involved embryonic stem cell-based (ESC) … Continue reading

Hormone Replacement Therapy Breast Cancer – WebMD

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2015

Hormone replacement therapy, also referred to as HRT, is used to relieve menopause symptoms, especially hot flashes and osteoporosis. A woman on hormone therapy usually takes both estrogen and progestin. Women who have had a hysterectomy can take estrogen alone. Estrogen relieves hot flashes and prevents osteoporosis. However, estrogen alone can increase your risk of developing uterine cancer. Many studies have looked at the association between hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer. The best evidence for the benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy come from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a large study involving more than 16,000 healthy women. The results published in July 2002 showed the risks of combined HRT with estrogen plus progestin outweigh the benefits. These risks included an increase in breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, and blood clots. Under the Affordable Care Act, many health insurance plans will provide free womens preventive services, including mammograms, birth control and well-woman visits. Learn more. Health Insurance Center Not only does combined HRT increase the risk of developing breast cancer, but it also increases the chances that the cancer will be discovered at a more advanced stage. This is due to its influence in reducing the effectiveness of … Continue reading

Biotechnology, genetic engineering: recombinant DNAEncyclopdia Britannica, Inc.the use of biology to solve problems and make useful products. The most prominent area of biotechnology is the production of therapeutic proteins and other drugs through genetic engineering. People have been harnessing biological processes to improve their quality of life for some 10,000 years, beginning with the first agricultural communities. Approximately 6,000 years ago, humans began to tap the biological processes of microorganisms in order to make bread, alcoholic beverages, and cheese and to preserve dairy products. But such processes are not what is meant today by biotechnology, a term first widely applied to the molecular and cellular technologies that began to emerge in the 1960s and 70s. A fledgling biotech industry began to coalesce in the mid- to late 1970s, led by Genentech, a pharmaceutical company established in 1976 by Robert A. Swanson and Herbert W. Boyer to commercialize the recombinant DNA technology pioneered by Boyer and Stanley N. Cohen. Early companies such as Genentech, Amgen, Biogen, Cetus, and Genex began by manufacturing genetically engineered substances primarily for medical and environmental uses. For more than a decade, the biotechnology industry was dominated by recombinant DNA technology, or genetic engineering. This technique consists of … Continue reading

Eczema in babies | BabyCenter

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2015

Definition of eczema in babies Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is a skin rash that usually appears before age 5. In babies it tends to show up on the cheeks and scalp, but it may spread to the arms, legs, chest, or other parts of the body. After a child's first year, it's most likely to show up on the insides of the elbows, the backs of the knees, the wrists, and the ankles, but it can also appear elsewhere. About 20 percent of babies and young children have eczema. It usually starts in infancy, with 65 percent of patients developing symptoms in the first year of life and 90 percent developing symptoms before age 5. The rash might look like dry, thickened, scaly skin, or it might be made up of tiny red bumps that ooze or become infected if scratched. Scratching can also cause thickened, darkened, or scarred skin over time. Eczema typically comes and goes. It isn't contagious, but because it's intensely itchy, it can be very uncomfortable, and scratching can be a problem. If untreated, the rash can be unsightly, so it may present a social challenge for a child, too. Your doctor can diagnose eczema … Continue reading

The primary goal in treating ulcerative colitis is to help patients regulate their immune system better. While there is no known cure for ulcerative colitis and flare ups may recur, a combination of treatment options can help you stay in control of your disease and lead a full and rewarding life. Treatment for ulcerative colitis and other IBD varieties is multifaceted and includes the use of medication, alterations in diet and nutrition, and sometimes surgical procedures to repair or remove affected portions of your GI tract. Medication for ulcerative colitis can suppress the inflammation of the colon and allow for tissues to heal. Symptoms including diarrhea, bleeding, and abdominal pain can also be reduced and controlled with effective medication. In addition to controlling and suppressing symptoms (inducing remission), medication can also be used to decrease the frequency of symptom flare ups (maintaining remission). With proper treatment over time, periods of remission can be extended and periods of symptom flare ups can be reduced. Several types of medication are being used to treat ulcerative colitis today. In some circumstances, a health care provider may recommend adding an additional therapy that will work in combination with the initial therapy to increase its … Continue reading
