Patient Services Using cutting edge technology and the latest clinical research, UHealth cardiovascular specialists provide comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for patients. Because UHealth is a university-based health system, heart patients are able to take advantage of breakthrough procedures and clinical trials only offered at University of Miami Hospital. UHealth physicians were the first in Florida to replace a diseased aortic valve without performing open heart surgery. This procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has given hope and a renewed quality of life for hundreds of heart patients. UHealth was also the first in the state to offer patients a clinical trial using their own stems cells to heal their hearts. These and many other breakthroughs define the level of skill and expertise of UHealth cardiovascular specialists. In addition to general cardiology services, there is a wide array of multidisciplinary specialized programs. At age 85, Rhoda Cohen suffered a heart attack and was diagnosed with a aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve. Biology – ScienceDaily

Biology, also referred to as the biological sciences, is the study of living organisms utilizing the scientific method. Biology examines the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living things. It classifies and describes organisms, their functions, how species come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with the natural environment. Four unifying principles form the foundation of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis. Biology as a separate science was developed in the nineteenth century, as scientists discovered that organisms shared fundamental characteristics. Biology is now a standard subject of instruction at schools and universities around the world, and over a million papers are published annually in a wide array of biology and medicine journals. Most biological sciences are specialized disciplines. Traditionally, they are grouped by the type of organism being studied: botany, the study of plants; zoology, the study of animals; and microbiology, the study of microorganisms. The fields within biology are further divided based on the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them: biochemistry examines the fundamental chemistry of life; molecular biology studies the complex interactions of systems of biological molecules; cellular biology examines the … Continue reading

Biology | California State University, Northridge

The Department of Biology is particularly proud of our lab and field courses. We offer a wide variety of hand-on opportunities in which students practice technique, gather data, and draw conclusions from those data. Many of these classes are very small. They use real laboratories and study organisms in their natural habitat. As a complement to these intimate classes, Biology majors also take a few large lecture classes, which are taught by rock-star lecturers. The faculty are remarkably open to exploring new and (hopefully) better teaching methods. For example, we adopted teaching with tablets and have done so as a group so as to make the tablet pay for itself thorugh savings on eTexts over paper books. Students often write reports and give spoken presentations. Reading the scientific literature is part of many classes. We believe in a tight interplay between teaching and research. The faculty are deeply involved in research training through doing research with students. The examination of our subject matter through our courses often inspires our research, and much of our research feeds back to make us better teachers. The variety and field-orientation of our course offerings are, we think, superior to those of any other university … Continue reading
