Biology | California State University, Northridge

The Department of Biology is particularly proud of our lab and field courses. We offer a wide variety of hand-on opportunities in which students practice technique, gather data, and draw conclusions from those data. Many of these classes are very small. They use real laboratories and study organisms in their natural habitat. As a complement to these intimate classes, Biology majors also take a few large lecture classes, which are taught by rock-star lecturers. The faculty are remarkably open to exploring new and (hopefully) better teaching methods. For example, we adopted teaching with tablets and have done so as a group so as to make the tablet pay for itself thorugh savings on eTexts over paper books. Students often write reports and give spoken presentations. Reading the scientific literature is part of many classes. We believe in a tight interplay between teaching and research. The faculty are deeply involved in research training through doing research with students. The examination of our subject matter through our courses often inspires our research, and much of our research feeds back to make us better teachers. The variety and field-orientation of our course offerings are, we think, superior to those of any other university … Continue reading

First stem cell trial for ALS treatment wins FDA approval …

Posted: Published on August 22nd, 2015

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave the green light Friday for a clinical trial of a new stem cell treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). University Michigan neurologist, Eva Feldman, M.D., Ph.D., will be the overall principal investigator for the first human clinical trial of a stem cell treatment for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The FDA approved an Investigational New Drug application from Neuralstem, Inc., a Rockville, Md.-based biotech company, to test the safety of a treatment in which patients will receive injections of the company's patented neural stem cells at multiple sites along the spinal cord. Director of the U-M ALS Clinic and the U-M Program for Neurology Research & Discovery, Feldman worked with a team of neurologists and with Neuralstem Inc. to develop the protocol for delivering the stem cells into the spinal cord of patients. The Phase 1 trial to determine the safety of the treatment is expected to take place exclusively at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., subject to approval by its Internal Review Board. "We are very excited about this clinical trial," said Feldman, the DeJong Professor of Neurology at the U-M Medical School. "This is a major stride … Continue reading

Gene Therapy and Children – KidsHealth

Posted: Published on August 21st, 2015

Gene therapy carries the promise of cures for many diseases and for types of medical treatment that didn't seem possible until recently. With its potential to eliminate and prevent hereditary diseases such as cystic fibrosis and hemophilia and its use as a possible cure for heart disease, AIDS, and cancer, gene therapy is a potential medical miracle-worker. But what about gene therapy for children? There's a fair amount of risk involved, so thus far only seriously ill kids or those with illnesses that can't be cured by standard medical treatments have been involved in clinical trials using gene therapy. As those studies continue, gene therapy may soon offer hope for children with serious illnesses that don't respond to conventional therapies. Our genes help make us unique. Inherited from our parents, they go far in determining our physical traits like eye color and the color and texture of our hair. They also determine things like whether babies will be male or female, the amount of oxygen blood can carry, and the likelihood of getting certain diseases. Genes are composed of strands of a molecule called DNA and are located in single file within the chromosomes. The genetic message is encoded by … Continue reading

Induced pluripotent stem cell – Wikipedia, the free …

Posted: Published on August 20th, 2015

Induced pluripotent stem cells (also known as iPS cells or iPSCs) are a type of pluripotent stem cell that can be generated directly from adult cells. The iPSC technology was pioneered by Shinya Yamanakas lab in Kyoto, Japan, who showed in 2006 that the introduction of four specific genes encoding transcription factors could convert adult cells into pluripotent stem cells.[1] He was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize along with Sir John Gurdon "for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent." [2] Pluripotent stem cells hold great promise in the field of regenerative medicine. Because they can propagate indefinitely, as well as give rise to every other cell type in the body (such as neurons, heart, pancreatic, and liver cells), they represent a single source of cells that could be used to replace those lost to damage or disease. The most well-known type of pluripotent stem cell is the embryonic stem cell. However, since the generation of embryonic stem cells involves destruction (or at least manipulation) [3] of the pre-implantation stage embryo, there has been much controversy surrounding their use. Further, because embryonic stem cells can only be derived from embryos, it has so far not been … Continue reading

From stem cells to billions of human insulin-producing …

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2015

Harvard stem cell researchers today announced that they have made a giant leap forward in the quest to find a truly effective treatment for type 1 diabetes, a condition that affects an estimated 3 million Americans at a cost of about $15 billion annually: With human embryonic stem cells as a starting point, the scientists are for the first time able to produce, in the kind of massive quantities needed for cell transplantation and pharmaceutical purposes, human insulin-producing beta cells equivalent in most every way to normally functioning beta cells. Doug Melton, who led the work and who 23 years ago, when his then infant son Sam was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, dedicated his career to finding a cure for the disease, said he hopes to have human transplantation trials using the cells to be underway within a few years. We are now just one pre-clinical step away from the finish line, said Melton, whose daughter Emma also has type 1 diabetes. A report on the new work has today been published by the journal Cell. Felicia W. Pagliuca, Jeff Millman, and Mads Gurtler of Meltons lab are co-first authors on the Cell paper. The research group and paper … Continue reading

Natural Treatment for Ulcerative Colitis – Robert Ginsburg

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2015

My name is Robert Ginsburg and I have been trained for over 15 years by highly honoured Russian physicist, Nicolai Levashov, in an extraordinary new healing technique that can cure ulcerative colitis. Where doctors may not be able to help, the Levashov Method I practice can! My training enables me to locate, treat and cure the cause of ulcerative colitis. My approach has saved lives, avoided dangerous surgery, and healed health problems leading specialists have pronounced hopeless! Because my healing process is entirely hands-off, I can help you, wherever you are in the world. Ulcerative Colits (UC) is a form of colitis, a disease of the colon (large intestine), that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores. The main symptom of active disease is usually constant diarrhea mixed with blood, of gradual onset. UC is often confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a troublesome but much less serious condition. Ulcerative Colitis is an intermittent disease, with periods of exacerbated symptoms, and periods that are relatively symptom-free. Although the symptoms of ulcerative colitis can sometimes diminish on their own, the disease usually requires treatment to go into remission. Ulcerative colitis has an incidence of 1 to 20 cases per 100,000 individuals per … Continue reading

HIV/AIDS vs. the California Stem Cell Research Agency …

HIV/AIDS vs. THE CALIFORNIA STEM CELL AGENCY: Disease-a-week Challenge # 13 So little attention is paid to HIV/AIDS nowadays, one might be forgiven for thinking it cured. But is it? To date, only one (1) person has been cured of HIV-AIDS. One million Americans have HIV/AIDS todayas do more than thirty million world citizensmany of them children, who caught the disease from their mothers breast milk. https://www.aids.gov/... They are not cured. It might be said that HIV/AIDS is controllable now, for those with the resources to pay for it. A therapy called ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy) can keep HIV patients alive. As long as the 30-40 pills are taken every day, in the right order and at the right time, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is survivable. But without the pills, (and they are not cheap) HIV advances to the death sentence of AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). HIV can be lived with; AIDS cannot. The disease is only managed, not cured. Even the remedy itself carries major risks. People on long-term ART may face cancer, heart and lung disease, osteoporosis, and other life-threatening maladies. And the one cured person, Timothy Ray Brown, better known as the Berlin patient? https://en.wikipedia.org/... Residing in Berlin, … Continue reading
