Cerebellar Ataxia Syndrome – Healthgrades

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2015

The term cerebellar ataxia syndrome is a description of a set of symptoms rather than a specific diagnosis or disease. Ataxia refers to an unsteadiness of gait or lack of muscle coordination. Cerebellar refers to the part of the brain called the cerebellum. The cerebellum is located inside the back and base of the skull, just above the top of the spinal cord. It processes input from other areas of the brain, the spinal cord, and sensory receptors. It is responsible for coordination and balance. In cerebellar ataxia syndrome, people may have an unsteady gait or lack of coordination because of problems with the cerebellum. Cerebellar ataxia can be classified as acute (happening suddenly and rapidly) or chronic (happening slowly over time). It can also be recurrent (happening on and off over time) or progressive (getting worse over time). Symptoms of cerebellar ataxia syndrome can appear without any obvious cause, but there are many diseases, disorders and conditions that can cause it. They include infectious diseases, inherited or genetic conditions, certain medications, tumors, trauma, and vascular conditions. Because of the range of possible causes of cerebellar ataxia syndrome, a correct diagnosis of the underlying disease, disorder or condition is important. … Continue reading

Interactives . DNA . Genetic Engineering

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2015

Genetic engineering is the process of removing a gene from one organism and putting it into another. Often, the removed genes are put into bacteria or yeast cells so that scientists can study the gene or the protein it produces more easily. Sometimes, genes are put into a plant or an animal. One of the first genetic engineering advances involved the hormone insulin. Diabetes, a medical condition that affects millions of people, prevents the body from producing enough insulin necessary for cells to properly absorb sugar. Diabetics used to be treated with supplementary insulin isolated from pigs or cows. Although this insulin is very similar to human insulin, it is not identical. Bovine insulin is antigenic in humans. Antibodies produced against it would gradually destroy its efficacy. Scientists got around the problem by putting the gene for human insulin into bacteria. The bacteria's cellular machinery, which is identical to the cellular machinery of all living things, "reads" the gene, and turns it into a protein-human insulin-through a process called translation. Eczema: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2015

Eczema is "a general term for any superficial inflammatory process involving the epidermis primarily, marked early by redness, itching, minute papules and vesicles, weeping, oozing and crusting, and later by scaling, lichenification and often pigmentation."1 It is also used specifically to refer to the condition atopic dermatitis. The word eczema comes from the Greek word ekzein meaning "to boil out"; the Greek word ek means "out," while the Greek word zema means "boiling." You will also see introductions at the end of some sections to any recent eczema developments that have been covered by MNT's news stories. Also look out for links to information about related conditions. Fast facts on eczema Here are some key points about eczema. More detail and supporting information is in the main article. The term 'eczema' is used in two different ways. It can be used widely to describe any rash-like skin conditions. It is usually used specifically to refer to the most common type of these skin conditions: atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition that commonly starts during infancy and continues through into childhood. Some people outgrow the condition while some people will continue to have it into adulthood. The word … Continue reading

New Treatments for Cerebral Palsy

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2015

Although there is no cure for cerebral palsy, the condition can be managed through a variety of therapies to help the child reach their maximum potential in growth and development. Even though there is still not a lot known about the origin and causes of cerebral palsy since its first documentation in 1861 by Dr. William Little, new treatments for cerebral palsy continue to break new ground and offer hope to the patients and families of this condition. One of the new treatments for cerebral palsy is selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR). SDR is the only surgical procedure that can provide permanent reduction of spasticity in cerebral palsy. During the operation, the neurosurgeon divides each of the dorsal roots in the spine into 3-5 rootlets and stimulates each root electronically. By examining the electrical responses from muscles in the lower extremities, they can identify the rootlets that cause spasticity. The abnormal rootlets are cut, leaving the normal rootlets in tact. This reduces messages to the muscles, resulting in better balance of activities of nerve cells in the spinal cord, and reducing spasticity. The advantages of SDR over other new treatments of cerebral palsy can be significant. There is a reduced risk … Continue reading

Fertility treatment: In vitro fertilization (IVF) | BabyCenter

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2015

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment in which sperm and eggs are combined in a laboratory. The resulting embryo or embryos are transferred to the woman's uterus, where they grow into a baby. IVF is by far the most commonly used high-tech fertility treatment, accounting for more than 99 percent of assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures. About 1 in 100 babies born in the United States is conceived using ART. IVF can help you get pregnant if you have problems with ovulation or egg quality, blocked fallopian tubes, or endometriosis; if your partner has problems with sperm count or motility; or if you're using donor eggs to become pregnant. IVF may also be an option if your doctor can't pinpoint the problem (this is called "unexplained infertility") or if other treatments have been unsuccessful. The timeline for IVF treatment usually goes something like this: You can take a pregnancy test about two weeks after the embryos are placed in your uterus. It takes about four to six weeks to complete one cycle of IVF. You have to wait a few weeks for your eggs to mature. Then you and your partner spend about half a day at your … Continue reading

Germ Line Engineering the Perfect Baby – disinformation

Scientists are developing ways to edit the DNA of tomorrows children. Should they stop before its too late? asks Antonio Regalado for MIT Technology Review: If anyone had devised a way to create a genetically engineered baby, I figured George Church would know about it. Photo: Kenny Louie (CC) At his labyrinthine laboratory on the Harvard Medical School campus, you can find researchers giving E. Coli a novel genetic code never seen in nature. Around another bend, others are carrying out a plan to use DNA engineering to resurrect the woolly mammoth. His lab, Church likes to say, is the center of a new technological genesisone in which man rebuilds creation to suit himself. When I visited the lab last June, Church proposed that I speak to a young postdoctoral scientist named Luhan Yang, a Harvard recruit from Beijing whod been a key player in developing a new, powerful technology for editing DNA called CRISPR-Cas9. With Church, Yang had founded a small company to engineer the genomes of pigs and cattle, sliding in beneficial genes and editing away bad ones. As I listened to Yang, I waited for a chance to ask my real questions: Can any of this be … Continue reading

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy for Inflammatory Bowel …

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2015

Summary of "Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis." Recent advances in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) therapeutics include novel medical, surgical, and endoscopic treatments. Among these, stem cell therapy is still in its infancy, although multiple studies suggest that the immunomodulatory effect of stem cell therapy may reduce inflammation and tissue injury in patients with IBD. This review discusses the novel avenue of stem cell therapy and its potential role in the management of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. We conducted a comprehensive literature search to identify studies examining the role of stem cell therapy (without conditioning and immunomodulatory regimens) in IBD. Taken together, these studies suggest a promising role for stem cell therapy in IBD although the substantial challenges, such as cost and inadequate/incomplete characterization of effect, limit their current use in clinical practice. This article was published in the following journal. Name: Inflammatory bowel diseases ISSN: 1536-4844 Pages: Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation Transfer of MESENCHYMAL STEM CELLS between individuals within the same species (TRANSPLANTATION, HOMOLOGOUS) or transfer within the same individual (TRANSPLANTATION, AUTOLOGOUS).
