Posted: Published on July 18th, 2015

Freshmen who major in engineering at Clemson are initially admitted into our general engineering program, where youll have a year to explore many different engineering disciplines, meet faculty from each of our engineering departments and discover which major fits your personal interests and talents. On the admissions application, you will apply as a general engineering major. Once into your core bioengineering curriculum, your classes will combine a solid background in engineering with the study of life sciences. From class to the lab, research is integral to a bioengineering career, and our students are encouraged to get involved in research projects as soon as possible. Classes include the study of EKG simulation, tissue engineering of heart valves, medical technology in the developing world and orthopaedic implants to name a few. Bioelectrical Concentration If you opt to go the bioelectrical route, you will become skilled in inventing, improving and maintaining the machines that allow physicians and technicians to perform procedures with greater accuracy and precision and less invasion. Biomaterials Concentration If you choose to specialize in biomaterials, youll study tissue engineering and appliances that can physically improve patient health. Some examples include artificial hips and growing new body parts with patient cells. … Continue reading

A page on cat anatomy needs to be a growing page bearing in mind the size of the subject matter. This page is just that. Simply click on the images below to go to details of the subject matter. To linked pages This page on cat anatomy is mainly about the domestic cat. But asthe domestic cat is essentially the same as the wild cat, the descriptions cover both. In fact a discussion about the anatomy of the domestic cat in terms of structure, movement and its wonderful senses has to be seen in the light of the wild cat. And the wild cats anatomy is built around its lifestyle evolving as they did into solitary, mainly ground dwelling, mammalian predators of great efficiency. Some wildcats are tree dwellers. These are specialist climbers with long tails and slender bodies. In gradually building the page, I hope that visitors will, from time to time, share in the process by making the odd contribution using theform linked to below. Multiple Sclerosis Pictures: MS Brain Lesions, Symptoms …

Posted: Published on July 18th, 2015

What Is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)? MS is a chronic disease that damages the nerves in the spinal cord and brain, as well as the optic nerves. Sclerosis means scarring, and people with MS develop multiple areas of scar tissue in response to the nerve damage. Depending on where the damage occurs, symptoms may include problems with muscle control, balance, vision, or speech. Nerve damage can cause: These symptoms may lead to frequent tripping or difficulty walking. More than half of people with MS experience a vision problem called optic neuritis. This inflammation of the optic nerve may cause blurred vision, loss of color vision, eye pain, or blindness, usually in one eye. The problem is usually temporary and tends to improve within a few weeks. In many cases, vision problems are the first sign of MS. Although less common than vision problems, some people with MS develop slurred speech. This happens when MS damages the nerves that carry speech signals from the brain. Some people also have trouble swallowing. MS can take a toll on mental sharpness. Some people may find it takes longer to solve problems. Others may have mild memory loss or trouble concentrating. Most people with MS … Continue reading

At Henry Ford, delivery of care is provided via emergency, medical, endovascular, surgical and clinical trial stroke treatments When treating stroke, no factor is more critical than time. When a patient with stroke symptoms arrives at Henry Ford Emergency Centers in Detroit, Dearborn, West Bloomfield or Sterling Heights, the Ford Acute Stroke Treatment (FAST) team jumps into action. The team works in concert to determine what kind of stroke occurred, what parts of the brain are being affected, and what medical, endovascular and/or surgical stroke treatments will best help each patient. The goal of the FAST team is to assess, triage, and make a stroke treatment decision within 60 minutes of a patient's arrival to the emergency room. Neurosurgeons and neuro-interventional specialists stand at the ready to provide emergency therapies to stroke patients as needed. Based on the stroke diagnostic results, the patient's medical history and current condition, and time from stroke symptom onset, patients with acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke are triaged in the Emergency Department for immediate medical, endovascular or surgical treatment for stroke. Neurology and Emergency Medicine stroke specialists provide standard intravenous and advanced intra-arterial t-PA therapy, as well as innovative clinical trial stroke treatments including intravenous abciximab … Continue reading

Even though matter can be found all over the Universe, you will only find it in a few forms on Earth. We cover five states of matter on the site. Each of those states is sometimes called a phase. There are many other states of matter that exist in extreme environments. Scientists will probably discover more states as we continue to explore the Universe. What makes a state of matter? It's about the physical state of the molecules and atoms. Think about solids. They are often hard and brittle. Liquids are fluidy, can move around a little, and fill up containers. Gases are always around you, but the molecules of a gas are much farther apart than the molecules in a liquid. If a gas has an odor, youll be able to smell it before you can see it. The BEC is all about atoms that are even closer and less energetic than atoms in a solid. So you're asking, "What is a chemical change?" Let's start with a glass of pure water. If the formula of water were to change, that would be a chemical change. If you could add a second oxygen atom to a water molecule, you … Continue reading

Concussion (Traumatic Brain Injury): Watch for Symptoms

Posted: Published on July 14th, 2015

What is concussion and what causes concussion? Concussion describes a brain injury where, after an injury, there are functional changes that occur in how the brain works but no structural damage can be seen on standard imaging tests like CT scan. Mild traumatic brain injury, or concussion, can be defined as a short-lived loss of brain function due to head trauma that resolves spontaneously. With concussion, function may be interrupted while there is no structural damage to the brain. The brain floats in cerebrospinal fluid and is encased in the skull. These protections allow it to withstand many of the minor injuries that occur in day-to-day life. However, if there is sufficient force to cause the brain to bounce against the rigid bones of the skull, then there is potential for injury. It is the acceleration and deceleration of the brain against the inside of the skull that can cause the brain to be irritated and interrupt its function. The acceleration can come from a direct blow to the head or face, or from other body trauma that causes the head to shake. While temporary loss of consciousness due to injury means that a concussion has taken place, most concussions … Continue reading

Linda S. says March 22, 2012 at 4:05 am Dear Elana, Im sorry to learn that you have multiple sclerosis. However Im delighted to read about your remedies. I was diagnosed with ms in 2008 and immediately afterwards I started searching for information on how to take care of myself. 5 Months after the diagnosis I started on my gluten- and dairy-free diet. I was also very strict with sugar and saturated fats and noticed improvements after 1 month on the diet. Like you I also started taking fish oil and vitamin D. Until this day (almost 4 years) I havent had another excacerbation, although neurologists predicted that I was to expect one appr. every 1.5 years. I could go on and on about the positive influence of my lifestyle -I dont call it a diet anymore- but I wont. Just want to thank you for sharing this with so many people, it is the most important information anyone can get. For me, being a scientist, it was easy finding literature about all the aspects of diet and disease, but for so many people out there it is just too difficult. Thanks again and take care! Linda (from Amsterdam, simply … Continue reading
