Seizures Symptoms, Causes, Tests, Diagnosis & Treatment

Posted: Published on May 10th, 2015

Seizures develop when there is an electrical misfire that occurs within the brain. This abnormal electrical activity indicates a brain problem and can either occur over the entire brain or in a small focused area of the brain. There are two main types of seizures, generalized seizures and partial seizures. Generally, seizures last up to 2 minutes and do not cause the person any harm. Seizures that are greater than five minutes in length warrant immediate medical attention. A seizure is the result of an error in the electrical system of the brain. When this blip in the normal controlled activity of the brain occurs, a seizure develops. The surge of unrestrained electrical energy may cause a brief state of unconsciousness and involuntary muscle contractions. Not all seizures cause convulsions; in fact, there are several types of seizures that present with only mild symptoms. Seizures are grouped into two main categories, generalized seizures and partial seizures. They are categorized based on the amount of brain area that experiences the seizure. The type of symptoms exhibited by an individual who is suffering from a seizure will depend on the type of seizure that is being experienced. It is important to understand … Continue reading

Dyshidrosis – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2015

Dyshidrosis (//,[1] also known as "acute vesiculobullous hand eczema,"[2] "cheiropompholyx,"[3] "dyshidrotic eczema,"[3] "pompholyx,"[3] and "podopompholyx"[3]) is a skin condition that is characterized by small blisters on the hands or feet. It is an acute, chronic, or recurrent dermatosis of the fingers, palms, and soles, characterized by a sudden onset of many deep-seated pruritic, clear vesicles; later, scaling, fissures and lichenification occur. Recurrence is common and for many can be chronic. Incidence/prevalence is said to be 1/5,000 in the United States. However, many cases of eczema are diagnosed as garden-variety atopic eczema without further investigation, so it is possible that this figure is misleading. This condition is not contagious to others, but the compromised integument can increase susceptibility to infection, and the accompanying itching can be a source of psychological duress. The name comes from the word "dyshidrotic," meaning "bad sweating," which was once believed to be the cause, but this association is unproven; there are many cases present that have no history of excessive sweating. There are many different factors that may trigger the outbreak of dyshidrosis such as allergens, physical and/or mental stress, or seasonal changes. Small blisters with the following characteristics: Advanced stage of dyshidrosis on the fingers … Continue reading

Ulcerative colitis Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatments and …

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2015

Ulcerative colitis: Introduction Ulcerative colitis is one type of several types of inflammatory bowel disease, which include Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic, ongoing disease that causes inflammation of the large intestine and/or rectum in the lower gastrointestinal tract. The hallmarks of ulcerative colitis are abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea due to inflammation and the development of open sores (ulcers) in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Other symptoms of ulcerative colitis include abdominal cramping, nausea, fever, skin ulcers, loss of appetite, weight loss, joint pain, and fatigue. People with ulcerative colitis may also develop anemia due to loss of blood. Ulcerative colitis can also lead to dehydration and malnourishment due to the loss of fluids and nutrients that occurs with ongoing or severe diarrhea. Serious complications of ulcerative colitis include hemorrhage, colon rupture, and the possible development of colon cancer. However, some people with ulcerative colitis may experience very mild symptoms. For more information on symptoms and complications, refer to symptoms of ulcerative colitis. It is not known what causes ulcerative colitis, but it may be the result of an over-reactive immune response to normal bacteria and other substances in the gastrointestinal tract. There may also be a … Continue reading
