The California Autism Center at Fresno State is making a difference for 25 students enrolled in the program. Each student receives one on one treatment. Amanda Adams is the clinical director. "The younger the brain the more impact we can have in the development and shift the development trajectory of a child, but even having said that the older children can still learn. There's never a stop to the learning." Erin Pachelbel is a speech pathology major at Fresno State. She's also in her first semester as a student clinician. "We're working on just making sure those sounds are accurate. We've got some "r" sounds and "l" sounds and things like that. Parents can observe nearby and listen in. All of the technology involved in the daily training doesn't come cheap. Families for Effective Autism Treatment or F.E.A.T. has raised thousands of dollars to make life easier for patients and parents. Paul Lambert is President of the group. "For the parents sitting outside that window to be able to hear what's going on in that room was always something you could take home and work not just the house you're hear a week or two hours a week or whenever … Continue reading

Mother abandoned severely disabled son, 21, in woods for 5 days to see boyfriend

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2015

Tribune wire reports 7:24 p.m. EDT, April 11, 2015 Philadelphia A mother abandoned her 21-year-old quadriplegic son in the woods more than five days ago - so she could go see her boyfriend in Maryland, police said Saturday. Charges of assault and other charges against her are pending. The son, who has cerebral palsy and is non-verbal, was found near 59th and Cobbs Creek Parkway on Friday night, lying in leaves and covered with a blanket. A wheelchair and a bible were nearby. He had apparently been in the woods since at least Monday, enduring a week of cold and days of rain. "This kid is obviously a fighter," said Lt. John Walker, who called the case heartbreaking. He said the investigation would consider the victim's care over several years. He was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was hospitalized for treatment of dehydration and a laceration on his back. His condition had stabilized by Saturday, police said. Police said the young man was first reported missing when he failed to show up at school this week. The school contacted his mother and aunts. The mother said her son was with her in Maryland, according to police. The … Continue reading

Study of processing speed impact on cognitive training

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2015

Kessler Foundation researchers published a subanalysis of their MEMREHAB trial, which shows that treatment with the modified Story Memory Technique (mSMT) may be affected by cognitive dysfunction. Investigators looked at the influence of processing speed on benefits of the mSMT, a 10-session cognitive intervention protocol shown to improve new learning and memory in individuals with MS. The influence of cognitive dysfunction on benefit from learning and memory rehabilitation in MS: A subanalysis of the MEMREHAB trial, was published online ahead of print on February 6 by Multiple Sclerosis Journal. The authors are John DeLuca, PhD, and Nancy Chiaravalloti, PhD, of Kessler Foundation. Deficits in processing speed, which are common in MS, have been shown to adversely affect cognitive and everyday functioning. "This evidence supports the need to investigate the influence of processing speed in performance on cognitive interventions," said Nancy Chiaravalloti, PhD, director of Neuroscience & Neuropsychology and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Research at Kessler Foundation." The MEMREHAB trial included 85 participants with MS; 45 received the intervention and 40 were controls. Half were found to have processing speed deficits; all had memory impairment as a criterion for participation in the trial. Among the participants with deficits in processing speed, … Continue reading
