Physicists have measured the ease of taking an electron from lawrencium (element 103), which sits in the f-block annex of the Periodic Table. Measurements of an artificial radioactive element called lawrencium could revive an arcane controversy over the elements position in the periodic table and the structure of the table itself. An international team of physicists and chemists reports in Nature1 that it takes very little energy to strip an electron out of an atom of lawrencium, element 103. The measurement is a tour de force of chemistry, because the radioactive element does not exist in nature, can be synthesized only in vanishingly small amounts, and lasts for mere seconds. Lawrencium, named after physicist Ernest Lawrence, the inventor of the cyclotron particle accelerator, is the heaviest element for which researchers have yet measured the fundamental property known as the first ionization energy the energy required to turn the atom into an ion by ripping out its most easily accessible electron. That measurement underpins researchers understanding of an atoms chemistry, but until now had been known only for the elements up to einsteinium (atomic number 99). Chemistry for Life Discovered Around Baby Star

Scientists have found complex organic molecules in a planet-forming disk of gas, dust and ice swirling around a very young star, evidence that the building blocks for life may be common in the universe. We already knew that these disks are rich in water and simple organics. This is the first time we detect more complex organics, astronomer Karin Oberg, with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told Discovery News. ANALYSIS: Could This Alien Cell Thrive on Titan? Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observatory located in Chile, Oberg and colleagues found large amounts of methyl cyanide -- a complex, carbon-based molecule -- as well as simpler hydrogen cyanide molecules in the proto-planetary disk surrounding MWC 480, a very young star roughly twice the size of the sun located about 455 light-years away. The molecules were found about 3 billion miles to 9 billion miles from the central star, which is distant by our solar system standards, but squarely in what would be a Kuiper Belt-like, comet-forming region for the larger MWC 480.
